Stuff you're truly surprised that ILM members generally like...

for me, it's:

The Streets (I'd assumed everyone agreed that this was bad high school poetry, uninteresting beats, not good to dance to, and embarrassing to know the words to)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Ultimate (fashion) style over substance (songs).

Dizzee Rascal (everyone repeats: I *really* want to like this...put it on a best of 2003, but never bump it in the ride...)

Bassment Jaxx: who cares anymore? house with a twist! others are doing it better, and with fewer crap guests.

anyone else?

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:23 (twenty years ago) link

oh yeah, have some more:

A.R.E weapons, A-Frames.

Junior Senior?

Jimmy theLogged-Out Saint, Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:26 (twenty years ago) link

does ILM really generally like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? That's pretty fucked.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:28 (twenty years ago) link

They suck!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:28 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry Paul, but threads like this are lame! What's the point of them?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:29 (twenty years ago) link

There are so many and Dizzee and or Basement Jaxx are always mentioned. Or the Streets.

I mean below my post watch 20 people go "yeah Dizzee Rascal, I don't get him", gleefully taking the opportunity to diss him. I realise this may not be your intention but still.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:30 (twenty years ago) link

"I Luv U" and "Fix Up Look Sharp" are great to put on really fucking loud in the car.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago) link

I'm pretty surprised at all the love poured out on any new hip-hop act. But its amusing - OMIGOD IT IS THE SECOND COMING OF 50 CENTS OR CHRIST OR SOMETHING!! sentiments.

Jimmy the Logged-Out Saint, Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago) link

Dizzee Rascal < Blazin' Squad. "Here 4 One" prooves as much.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:36 (twenty years ago) link

Oh please.

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:49 (twenty years ago) link

What current house (excluding microhouse) is better than Basement Jaxx? Cuz I'd love to hear it...I find it hard to believe there's a song better than "Good Luck" that was released in 2003.

djdee2005, Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago) link

I *really* want to like this...put it on a best of 2003, but never bump it in the ride...

i can't bump it in the ride because i have no ride. but if i did... oh god! crazy bumpin' would be going on, i'll tell you what.

Barima-o Nyatekyington (Barima), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:06 (twenty years ago) link

I'm surprised that so many people are into this 'New American Weird' stuff. Got alot of good suggestions for d/loading. That was a cool surpise. Usually I avoid the plague of grime/microhouse/etc threads because they bore me. But I think alot of music critics visit this page. So if that's what they are into I ain't going to bitch and I ain't going to participate! Which is cool.

Jimmy the Logged-Out Saint, Monday, 2 February 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago) link

mmm, without knowing the people, it's difficult to seperate critical consensus from group-think. but the reason i brought up the examples in question is because anyone who knows those genres deeply can identify those that become critically perpetuated. to put in bluntly:

jaxx don't mean shit to house no more. check: les clones, tribilation
ditto hip hop. check: doom, kardinal, horror city.

yeah sure, call it a matter of opinio, or that such threads don't matter, but it's why some interesting people leave here. Remember just a few months ago when everyone decided DFA's "yeah" was the shit?

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:30 (twenty years ago) link

it is

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:32 (twenty years ago) link

"interesting people"

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago) link

People who know genres deeply are a useful resource but I'm not sure I trust them too much.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago) link

Well it's a bit of a moot point because there are heaps of people here who know house deeply and still check for Basement Jaxx.

You're right, Paul, they're not really house anymore and... um... who cares? Their early trad-house stuff was (with some notable exceptions) the worst stuff they've done; you could almost say that the Jaxx have spent their entire career running away from house.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 February 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago) link

wait wait is this just another "hipster" thread in sheep's clothing?

I have doubts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:11 (twenty years ago) link

They wear black turtlenecks. I do not know if the turtlenecks are made of wool now, but soon they will be.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:11 (twenty years ago) link

p.s. paul i've tried to read this mmm, without knowing the people, it's difficult to seperate critical consensus from group-think. but the reason i brought up the examples in question is because anyone who knows those genres deeply can identify those that become critically perpetuated. to put in bluntly. about eight times, and, though i am sure it is english, it be lookin like the funny talk.

Let's flashback to all the fun

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 2 February 2004 08:43 (twenty years ago) link

I am surprised (but happy) that strongo likes XTC.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 2 February 2004 10:38 (twenty years ago) link

I am surprised that so many of y'all are into Ween (I mean, they're allright, but I like Cake's subtleties better), Christina Aguilera (she's a terribly overrated singer) and The Strokes (who cares anymore?).

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 2 February 2004 10:46 (twenty years ago) link

I answer the question I don't think about ILM as a generality really, and if I did I wouldn't be surprised at its liking stuff I think is shit - I'm not surprised that people like the Flaming Lips for instance, just disappointed!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 2 February 2004 10:50 (twenty years ago) link

I am disappointed that some people here don't think the soft bulletin is a great album (you know just that one, I'm not asking for a lot).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 2 February 2004 10:52 (twenty years ago) link

I'm surprised that Julio likes XTC, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:53 (twenty years ago) link

I started a thread about Les Clones ages ago, it got ZERO ANSWERS.

The Jaxx aren't really in direct competition with Alan Braxe, in my head anyway, nor will they ever be.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago) link

but Basement Braxe is a good concept (already happened with Rendez-Vu Dreamz Dub perhaps)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago) link

hey where the hell are my cards??

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:41 (twenty years ago) link

haha "beavis and butthead fathered by paul morley" is still one of the best things anyone's ever said about me.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago) link

better add that to the epitaph

"beavis and butthead fathered by paul morley, A FLAILING OVEREGGED PUDDING, BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE"

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago) link

I was truly surprised by the overwhelmingly pro-Boston (the group) consensus in a recent "Boston: C or D" thread.

Myonga Von Bontee, Monday, 2 February 2004 15:17 (twenty years ago) link

I think what makes ILM so intriguing, however, is that there isn't one single herd mentality. I'm never surprised, by this point, to find people championing stuff that to my ears is flatly indefensible, but that's what makes it interesting (well, for me anyway). I'm also struck by the diversity in some peoples' tastes (as I mentioned above, I'm surprised that Julio likes XTC, as he seems more interested in fusion jaz and contemporary pop). But, y'know, it's obviously an inexact science.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

not fusion jazz, but "free jazz". Apologies.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

Cake's subtleties

I'm trying to parse this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:00 (twenty years ago) link

I'm going to try and use my Thread Killa powers and end this thing.
Okay. Stand back...

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 2 February 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

I couldn't love a woman that didn't like Dizzee Rascal.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:10 (twenty years ago) link

@d@ml then suddenly remembers he forgot to check with his wife on this assertion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:14 (twenty years ago) link

You should hear her impression of Dizzee, it's great!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:17 (twenty years ago) link

Ah, but what American singers can you impersonate? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago) link

Tom Waits, Elvis, Randy Newman, Louis Armstrong. Err, that's it!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:24 (twenty years ago) link

Bassment Jaxx: who cares anymore?
The Strokes (who cares anymore?)

these kind of statements always bother me. i think it is a little sad that noone can have staying power. I mean these are two groups one with three albums, one with only two (!) and, at least I think, each have improved with each album. Why does everyone want to throw away artists so quickly?

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:03 (twenty years ago) link

tis the nature of an industry built on disposability.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago) link

Bassment Jaxx: who cares anymore?

Clearly Siouxsie Sioux does, and that's good enough for me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago) link

Total agreement with Alex in NYC shockah!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:04 (twenty years ago) link

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:04 (twenty years ago) link

But we're the freaks of the industry. (Aren't we?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:05 (twenty years ago) link

Does anyone else here do a Dizzee Rascal impression? My mate Tom does. He also does Will.I.Am and Steve Lamacq. And Ken Bruce. And Joey Ramone.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:19 (twenty years ago) link

But industry, does he do the industry?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago) link

He's not had a job in three years, which is probably good preperation for a career in impersonating B-list musical celebrities.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:28 (twenty years ago) link

He also does Brian Sewell and Noel Coward, but they're the same impression.
