I can't get into In The Woods - is there something wrong with me?

On paper, they should be my favourite metal band - proggy, lots of ideas, lots of fairly chilled bits peppered with fast bits - even King Crimson covers! But I just can't seem to get into them.

Omnio is supposed to be the best thing ever but all I hear are a sad goth couple who've watched The Crow one too many times. The whole thing sounds like they're trying so hard to be serious that it ends up sounding forced and really a bit sad.

So really what I'm asking is can someone convince me to think otherwise? Am I missing something here? Have I got the context wrong? Maybe I need to know a bit more about this band before I can see where they're coming from.

I remember hearing Omnio years ago when it was all hyped up and being very unimpressed. Indistinct 'atmospheric' goth metal, give me The Gathering any day.

More vindication!

Yes, "indistinct" is the key word. I can't focus on any particular part - nothing jumps out of me. I have been accused of liking gimmick-y metal but surely there should be something more to it than this?

I realize it's a snobist cliche to say that the demo and the debut were their best, but they really are...

Eh, sounds like a personal problem. Hype notwithstanding, i think that In the Woods were one of the best bands in any genre. Mopey goth kids? I don't remember any post-punk, industrial, ebm, ethereal or anything else construed as goth on their albums, though I suppose some goths wouldn't object to their music OR atmosphere. "Omnio" and "Strange in Stereo" are their best works imo, and lightyears past "Heart of Ages" or the demo, but that's just one point of view.

As for the Gathering, they're a great band but pretty conventional when compared to In the Woods... or The Third and the Mortal.

What I've heard of the Third And Mortal I didn't really like for more or less the same reasons as ITW.

Siegbran - the only tracks I've quite liked by ITW are on the demo, so you're right there :-)
