The Downward Spiral

The Fragile

JesusMaryChain, Monday, 2 February 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh...... are they "classics" or "duds".....I thought the damn posting mechanism would clarify for me. Convenience, please.

JesusMaryChain, Monday, 2 February 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They're all classics.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

my opinion on this "musical" "act" is well documented

Seb, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad we're all in general agreement here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(Though I actually think The Fragile might yet be the best album he's done, even though I didn't live inside it as much as Downward)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to break up the general agreement, but my blood wants to say hello to you!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

They're all neat, and I'm waiting for the All The NIN hits That Sound Like Dirty INXS Songs comp, but I must complain of filler on all of these. Plus I don't like the uncatchy screamy stuff.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

but my blood wants to say hello to you!

Ew, put that away.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that how the US reacted to The Fragile?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The true test of a nin fan is if you can stomach The Purest Feeling demos. (Lately, I really like the live "acoustic" version of 'the Big Come Down' floating around the net.)

(You mean aside from that whole debut at number 2 thing, right?)

TrentLuv (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

that wasn't the US that put it at no. 2, that was the trench coat mafia. The US is what made it slide down the charts immediately after, which actually I thought was kind of unfair, cuz I thought that We Should Be Together song was fine proto-Linkin Parkage (at time I would have called it "middle school angstage" but same diff).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The Purest Feeling demos

MAAAAAAAAAYBE, maybe JUST ONCE, I'll GET what's COMING to MEEEEEEEEEE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who can listen to "A Warm Place" and feel nothing, has no soul and should bugger the eff off. S'there.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That includes David Bowie feeling "I thought I wrote Crystal Japan," of course. ";-)" (Also: La Mer is nother great trent instrumental!!)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who can listen to "A Warm Place" and feel nothing, has no soul and should bugger the eff off. S'there

well that includes me, so here we are.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

filler¿ tell me what nin songs you consider filler. please. anthony.
skip the fragile tho.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather listen to "vletrmx21" to "A Warm Place," thanks.

Leee Majors (Leee), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Great bad, particularly "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Closer". "The Fragile" would possibly belong in that thread about turning an average album into a classic one by removing half the tracks...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't, Dyson, its been ages since I've listened to 'em. But I didn't even like "March Of The Pigs" so don't mind me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

In Praise of.....the BROKEN e.p. by Nine Inch Nails

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, you know that thumping sound that makes Closer so much the sexy? It's a beat! Rhythm is good!

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a special honorary mention should be given to Maxwell's cover of "Closer," which while overlong, does find him adding lines about how you and him should "do the freak-ay."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just recently heard Maxwell's cover of Kate Bush's emotionally celestial "This Woman's Work," and he should be pistol whipped into blubbering submission and forced to drink a thermos of his own urine for that particular particular affront.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, particular!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, he totally calls her "the bomb" on his Unplugged EP. Respect was given and respect is due!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

just his own urine, alex¿ you're getting soft.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

And for that alone, he should have his vomit-drenched ashes spread on unhallowed ground and then fertilized with the rancid dung of an incontinent warthog.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, yeah. The Maxwell cover is great.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I still love NIN. This is probably how I would rate them:

1. Perfect Drug single / Lost Highway soundtrack (probably in my top 5 songs ever)
2. Broken
3. Fixed
4. Pretty Hate Machine
5. The Downward Spiral

I do not rate The Fragile; it is okay, but I do not own it and would not ever like to hear it again. And Things Falling Apart should be DESTROYED DESTROYED DESTROYED! omg soooo bad.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I forgot to put Further Down the Spiral! That should go after PHM, before TDS.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The two "remixes" on Further Down the Spiral are the only Aphex Twin other than Windowlicker that I can stand to hear anymore.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

See how NIN makes me indulge my rockism!?!?

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You forgot to mention Still -- to which I listen right now. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never owned the Fragile, but someone's copy is usually around. Whenever I put it on, I usually think 'meh' at first, then there are always some fantastic tracks that I've completely forgotten about.

I agree that the Perfect Drug is definitely one of their best tunes (damn, Trent would have become a jungle producer...).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard Still Ned, is it good?

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it -- it's theoretically the 'low key' album, not quite NIN unplugged obv, but the reworkings of older songs aim at generally more stripped down/slower takes. Personally I think the version of "And All That Could Have Been" here is the keeper.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been able to get past Reznor, whose voice and lyrics I find just plain awful (actually this is my problem with basically 90% of what got released on Wax Trax/TVT.) I imagine that instrumental versions of some of this stuff could be okay, but frankly I can't imagine ever really caring enough to find out if such a thing existed.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Purest Feeling demos

D'oh! I paid way too much for that disc back in high school & upon listening even as a massive fan was like.. WTF???? However I did make a profit reselling it several years later to some random NIN obsessive in Japan.

I think "March of the Pigs" is my favorite moment of theirs. The video's pretty funny..

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that Maxwell cover is horrible. I had such high hopes too. :( A Trent produced Maxwell version would be sweet as hell I bet.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I never got into the Fragile. I sort've gave up after "the Perfect Drug" (which is, admittedly, fantastic...especially the drum break.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

_The Fragile_ is 100% worth getting if only for "We're In This Together Now", "Into The Void", and "The Wretched".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that Maxwell cover is horrible. I had such high hopes too. :(

B-but what about the double time, 4 on the floor gospel bit?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fragile tour was pretty good. When I saw him in NYC, Manson came out onstage to sing "Starfuckers, Inc." and the crowd went wild, which was kind of funny. I own a lot of his stuff (all three full-length albums, the live thing, and Broken) but I never ever feel the urge to actually listen to any of it.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That performance is a hidden track on the DVD. Good stuff.

i love the og ghosts but these volumes are far more fleshed out and their own thing

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 00:07 (six years ago)

Together was kinda wallpaper-y to me but maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it. Haven't made it all the way through Locusts yet.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 01:01 (six years ago)

Locusts sounds a lot more soothing than Together to me (also agree it's one of the best things he's done). One of the tracks on Together has this really high frequency tone overlaid on top that's bad enough that I have to skip it.

three months pass...

I tend to play my music on album-shuffle, so I never quite know what I'm going to get. My wife was chilling on the sofa by the stereo speakers while I think something mellow like Can's "Soon Over Babaluma" was playing, but then things got a little quiet and I couldn't quite make out what had queued up next. I look at what's about to play on my phone and see it's "The Downward Spiral" about to blargh out, so I quickly hit skip. "That was a close one," I told her. "You almost got Nine Inch Nailed!"

Here's a question: is there anywhere that lists all the appearances of what one might call the "NIN motif"?

heartening—after watching him complain about his own voice in the nin song exploder episode, always wishing he sounded like bowie instead—to hear him hit that sustained note in "fantastic voyage"

F*ck, well it is footage recently surfaced of NIN at Woodstock before the performance, shit-talking the other acts and discussing where the best mud might be at.

Huh. I’ve never listened to How To Destroy Angels but after all of that I think I need to do so

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 13 April 2026 14:42 (two days ago)

The HTDA records are pretty good. I had a similar thought after watching that performance - that I should pull them off my hard drive and revisit.

wipes chooser (unperson), Monday, 13 April 2026 15:04 (two days ago)

I feel like the Coachella show is launching me into another NIN obsession. That was so incredible.

jmm, Monday, 13 April 2026 20:40 (two days ago)

I walked out of the Peel It Back tour show last August thinking I should really see if I could catch another show on the tour. I can't think of a large venue show I've attended, let alone an arena-sized show, where I've had that impulse

mh, Monday, 13 April 2026 20:54 (two days ago)

I wish the timing had worked out on any of their more recent stops near here. It's wild that a band/performer this good and this consistent can sort of also be underrated, given how much many take it for granted.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 April 2026 20:57 (two days ago)

htda is basically just the less aggressive end of nin with mariqueen on lead vocals, it's fine. not really up with the best nin material but i'd take welcome oblivion over the slip?

ufo, Monday, 13 April 2026 21:44 (two days ago)

Whoever decided that Trent should stand feet shoulder width and Mariqueen should stand feet together (and that’s the extent of their stage presence for the first twenty minutes) deserves a high five

the gay of hormuz (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 13 April 2026 23:13 (two days ago)

Seriously. I watched a bit of a ripped stream, and my first thought was, eh, where is the chaos of the band members bouncing off of each other? But then as it evolved I came around to it being one of the coolest performances ever.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 April 2026 20:55 (yesterday)

the guy is 60.

beard papa, Tuesday, 14 April 2026 21:13 (yesterday)

Maybe that is why he was just standing there.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 April 2026 22:09 (yesterday)

~ someone didn’t watch very far but has some conclusions! ~

mh, Tuesday, 14 April 2026 22:12 (yesterday)

Somebody informed me that Trent is 5’7” which does explain why he’s so neatly ripped and well-proportioned on camera. His vocal performance at Coachella was incendiary— the duetting w Mariqueen on Heresy especially— I felt like he was reaching Scott Walker level highs within his own particular genre

the gay of hormuz (flamboyant goon tie included), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 22:32 (yesterday)

yeah it's beautifully choreographed and the sound and vocal performance are somehow better than the records. trent's whole look - the clean-cut thing - is just mindblowingly perfect for whatever this is, material-spiritual bombast at its highest possible intensity.

dream mummy (map), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 23:08 (yesterday)

i'm kind of clueless about nin sadly but every time i see some of their live footage i'm really drawn in. maybe i'll actually give this new album a listen for once. i remember when ridha was a hot club music name in the early 2010s, cool to see him ride to this.

dream mummy (map), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 23:14 (yesterday)

His vocal performance at Coachella was incendiary

I really was amazed just by his singing and whatever the mic and mixing were on this. And really, it was true for the other Coachella sets I saw streaming this year too. Met Live-level mixing and editing.

Come On, (Eazy), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 23:18 (yesterday)

There were some studio BVs in the mix, and they may have switched to tracking for bits of choreography — eg during Closer, for the “getting dragged down the pyramid by wretches”

uploading this content requires perseveration (sic), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 23:39 (yesterday)

i really wanted reznor's falsetto "perfect" to jump out on "closer". at least it was audible. a sudden falsetto note is really hard to project at the same level i imagine?

dream mummy (map), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 23:43 (yesterday)

The "Closer" choreography was so creepy. Up until the group slide - that part looked fun.

jmm, Tuesday, 14 April 2026 23:43 (yesterday)

boys noize and his record label have had some pretty good stuff lately. fwiw the “she’s gone away” nonoize version is basically the lyrics over the boys noize track “girl crush”

trent reznor’s going hard for his age but BN did this set, a separate dj set, and a second dj set elsewhere over the weekend. I need to get my shit together, he’s around my age

mh, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 00:05 (six hours ago)

― Josh in Chicago

Now now he also slid down a thing at one point.

chap, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 00:07 (six hours ago)

also some strutting back and forth on an uneven surface, etc

bouncing off other band members hasn’t really been a nin thing since the 90s, not even the post-rehab very swole reznor period. tbf he probably would have accidentally knocked one of the skinnier guitarists through a wall if he’d tried that then

mh, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 00:13 (six hours ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4sUq-ftzgc

the fantastic nine inch noize performance mostly just has me now thinking about the best thing nin have done in recent years

ufo, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 01:16 (five hours ago)

excellent choice

however, per mr. reznor’s nomenclature, that is a soundtrack by the two members of nine inch nails and alan sparhawk/bj burton

I get why he pushes on that but it’s also fun to show up to the NIN show and tell the person to your side that you hope they do songs from the Pixar movie Soul

mh, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 01:26 (five hours ago)

I liked the Reznor+Noize remixed Challengers soundtrack on a long walk. And the Reznor/Ross score to the forgotten Sam Mendes film Empire of Light is interesting because it’s shamelessly beautiful without any edges, just going for pretty.

Come On, (Eazy), Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:05 (four hours ago)

(And I should say I’ve done a 180 on NIN, at least their 21st-century incarnation, after basically disliking them as much as I disliked Requiem for a Dream, for similar reasons.)

Come On, (Eazy), Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:06 (four hours ago)

archive.org link is dead :(
Sorry i missed it.

fajita seas, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:23 (four hours ago)

they were doing "(you made it feel like) home" from the reznor/ross bones and all score on the most recent tour!

ufo, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:51 (four hours ago)

"a minute to breathe" too!

during the 2013/2014 tours they did a few reznor/ross tracks too, though those were instrumentals

ufo, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:54 (three hours ago)

i really wanted reznor's falsetto "perfect" to jump out on "closer". at least it was audible. a sudden falsetto note is really hard to project at the same level i imagine?

He’s 60, you lose your head voice as you age

This might be getting somewhat parasocial— but part of what I loved so much about this performance was the husband/wife element, and how it recontextualized the unknown “you” that is the subject of so much of the depresso Downward Spiral era stuff— all of it, really. The salvation is onstage and a part of the show and a part of the narrative. These songs flipped from being “I’m 26 and depressed and drug addicted and want to die” into a new “I made it through all that and now I’m a happy father of six” victory lap
