Ghost "Hypnotic Underworld" C/D

After having Acid Mother's Temple stealing their schtick for God-knows-how-many records, Batoh and company finally return. I've only listened to the whole thing in its entirety once, but I was very very impressed. Anyone else heard this?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had it for a while now...definitely classic, though I resequence it so it doesn't start with two long-ish instrumentals. I think it's probably their best album.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i love it.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, and i mentioned that stealing of the schtick thing in a review i wrote about the new ghost.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's their best as well, tho I haven't heard "Tune in, Turn On, Free Tibet". It just has everything I like about them from their previous records distilled into their most powerful essence - times 200%. The acid-rock really RAWKS, the space-y stuff isn't boring or meandering, the folkie stuff is really pretty and dare I say it, ghostly...

as for AMT - I like them okay, but really I was surprised at all the hubbub about them being this wiiiiyuld Japanese free-form psychedelic collective! as if that was a breathtaking new concept. It's a GOOD concept and yes, let's have more of it, but y'know "let's not all start sucking each other's dicks just yet" and all that. I think Batoh and co. have the edge insofar as they can do both real, almost prog-y, songs plus the out there experimental stuff and still keep it all together. AMT, on occasion, is just a sprawling mess.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked AMT fine until they started putting out a limited-edition multi-coloured cdr every week. then i just said, enough already. how many of their albums do i really need? well, i have like 10, so i guess that's enough. the new ghost is 70 minutes long, but it feels like a lean and mean machine. it's beautiful. It reminds me of a really good amon duul 2 album.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm very happy with it, but I'm not so sure it's their best. I'd have to listen to it some more before saying it's as good as Snuffbox Immanence. The songs were tighter on that and the blissouts more blissful, or at least that's how they stack up in comparison after only a couple listens. But Ghost not completely at their best is still something to get pretty psyched about.

otto, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have one AMT album ("The Geocentric World of ..." or something like that) and it's a fine piece of work. But I think when a band starts putting out so much stuff the way they did, it actually gives the impression that there's *less* thought and energy put into their releases than was previously believed, and people feel start to feel cheated. Like, "I thought you were a hard-working freak of nature and now it turns out you can shit these albums out daily" = "I feel like a sucker." It forces people to draw the distinction between "prolific genius" and "lazy artist with no editor".

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

MUST. HAVE. THIS. ALBUM.

I am somewhat biased it's true.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, I don't have that live thing, "Temple Stone". Me want!

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes you do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, after browsing through what you wrote, you for sure must have this album.

It's definitely got the best art of any of their CDs, featuring a gauze overlay to go between the jewel case and the booklet proper. I've never seen anything like it. Drag City must have pulled out all the stops for Ghost this time around.

otto, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

*weeps with pleasure* I mean, I was planning on getting it anyway, but only severe restraint keeps me from flying over and stealing Scott's copy (and all the other stuff he has that I want, which I will replace with diapers a-plenty for Rufus, so he will feel he has gained something in the robbery transaction).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Drag City must have pulled out all the stops for Ghost this time around."

:( the double-vinyl is yr standard gatefold. Bah! It does sound nice tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, you stay away Ned! you've got plenty to listen to! I know it's an old joke, but i always love that AMG related albums thing. If you loved Temple Stone you are sure to love Hats by The Blue Nile!

bug drag city for a copy. they'd give you one, no?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorta lazy when it comes to getting on promo lists -- people just seem to find me in turn. Which is flattering.

you are sure to love Hats by The Blue Nile!

Hey, they're right!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

a walk across the rooftops is my personal fave. that was my emo album when it came out. lately, if a record company sends me spam i write them right back and demand a copy of whatever it is they are shilling.i don't care what it is. i'm bored. it's cold. what can i say?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

No, that's quite a sensible approach. Unfortunately I keep getting mail from two-bit nu-metal publicity firms.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

that's true unfortunately. i'm still awaiting my copy of the queer eye for the straight guy soundtrack.

(i wrote one piddly nu-metal review years ago and for the longest time all i got in the mail was horrible godsmack-esque crap)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, I don't have that live thing, "Temple Stone". Me want!

I think the concept (recorded in Japanese Temples!) is better than the execution (okay versions of songs on other albums!). But if you have everything else, I guess you should seek it out.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I like tat new Ghost album fine. In fact, I like all the Ghost albums I've heard fine. And all the Acid Mother Temple albums, too. Which admittedly is not nearly as many as Scott has heard. And if you blindfolded me I bet I couldn't tell them apart. (And also, I have no idea whatsoever what "the acid-rock really RAWKS" means. Honest.)

chuck, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

More guitar pedals, sometimes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for convincing me to go spend $15 (give or take). I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No worries, if you don't like it, you can give it to me. Sell it to me, uh, yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'm sure I'll like it. I've been sleeping on Ghost for far too long. The only stuff I've heard is a live show I slsk'd AGES ago and very rarely listen to (but enjoy thoroughly whenever I do.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The live shows I've seen them do (or heard from the next room) are always pretty fabboo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Initial thoughts: The beginning of the album sounds like the vaguely shapeless stuff on Tago Mago. What a weird fucking way to start. When it moves into that vaguely chugging bass riff, though, it improves. The hard rocking stuff is totally good. It's not as messy as I was anticipating; the guitars don't sound too effected. This is both nice and kind of irritating. There are a few points on the album that sound like vaguely generic hard 'psych' rock.

All of the flutes are a nice touch; they're something one never really hears in the context of Western pop/rock music. Part of me wishes the album were entirely instrumental. I always get frustrated with lyrics I can't understand. Cultural bias kinda blows.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This is probably the only Japanese band I've heard who are actually any good - Haco is a solo artist so she doesn't count, she's good too,

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus, have you ever heard White Heaven? I think you would totally like them. Very much post-Quicksilver-Messenger action. Anyway, they are Japanese and they rule. I promise, you would love them.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't like white heaven much actually. Ghost's 'temple stone' is really good but I don't feel I need anymore from them.

I'm surprised you like haco keith. Isn't this stuff a bit too prog for you?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, no, never heard them, I'll remember the name. Trouble is I've taken against Japanese bands as a result of hearing people go so over the top about so many of them and being extremely underwhelmed by most of what I've heard. I actually quite like Acid Mothers, but generally the quieter stuff, the noisy stuff is mostly garbage.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Too prog? You're talking to a man with every Henry Cow album ever made! On vinyl too. Now where did I put that copy of "The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage"?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I fucking love Ghost but I have to say (and I know I'm in a tiny minority here) that I didn't really get White Heaven at all. Too many of their songs just plod along, and Christ, those terrible vocals... Mind you, I never really got QMS either, so there you go. Never bothered checking out the Stars, who are sort of the sequel to White Heaven...

Best Ghost-related stuff I've heard are the two Masaki Batoh solo records and the Cosmic Invention album. All great and well worth your time and money.

Man, I'm looking forward to hearing the new one. Anyone in the UK carrying it yet?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a good comparison with ghost are che-shizu. quite enjoyed 'nazareth' on PSF.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw this album secondhand at the weekend - obviously someone decided they didn't like it... rather quickly too.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

white heaven's "electric cool acid" is nice. i like "out" alot, but it's something i have to be in the mood for.

not too sure i'm enjoying this new ghost album as much as "lama rabi rabi" or the first two.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 12 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Wolf Eyes!!

Also, "Holy High" sounds like a fucking movie soundtrack song -- great!

What Ghost should I get next? All I have is this and some 7".

If you like the song 'Holy High', check out 'Guru In The Echo' from the first one, Ghost. Album-wise, I'd probably go for Lama Rabi Rabi next though.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

See em live, they completely surprised me. Their albums are somtimes a little too "airy" or something, but they were very present on stage and played LOUD and with incredible energy. I think they're coming to the US soon.
As far as albumns, I like Snuffbox Immanence and the first s/t one. Tune in, Turn on, Free Tibet is good, too, but I don't pull it out as much as the others. I used to have Second Time Around, but I sold it years ago. Wish I hadn't now.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they ever play in COOL PLACES in the US? Like snake mounds?

My favourite track on this is Hazy Paradise. It's worth checking out the original by Earth and Fire, if you don't know it. they were like a dutch version of early jefferson airplane, until they went all disco/abba-tronic.

what happened to this band? one album after this one, i think, then . . . ?

there's another band named ghost now, but it's (obv.) not the same.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 2 October 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

that fake Ghost bums me out

Batoh has done a couple of records with Helena Espvall lately, the 2009 double is really really good. I'm not so hot on the first one.

sleeve, Sunday, 2 October 2011 02:52 (fourteen years ago)

he did solo tour in US I wanna say, early last year. So, still active. But yeah, new Ghost lp would be welcomed.

I think that fake metal Ghost is actually playing Chicago this weekend, with Enslaved. I am going to see Souled American reunion that night. Can't wait!

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 2 October 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)

oh man, i love both bands named ghost.

the new one reminds me of a nu-blue oyster cult. the world could use a new BOC, IMO.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 2 October 2011 03:02 (fourteen years ago)

well BOC is one of my favorite bands ever, so I'm hip to what you say. I'm actually taking an Amtrak train down to Effingham, Illinois (wherever the heck that is) to see them in three weeks!

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 2 October 2011 03:08 (fourteen years ago)

i've seen youtube clips of them performing. they hold up well live.

i think much of the BOC comparison is the layered vocal harmonies, which took a back seat in metal when screaming like the cookie monster became de rigueur.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 2 October 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

oh I've seen BOC once a year for the last twelve years or so. I actually had to miss them this yeat because their Chicago-area was the same night as Pitchfork fest. So, Pitchfork won out. But, I want to keep my streak alive, so I am taking the train down to Effington (LOVE that name) in a few weeks. Should be rad. But yeah, still fun live -- when I started my streak 12 yrs ago, it was still 3 original members : Bloom, Dharma, and Lanier.

Lanier decided to retire in mid-2000's , and the shows seem a little less epic without him. Supporting band still good tho (Rudy Sarzo on bass!!), and the thing that keeps me coming back is the fact that they still constantly change the setlist. Like, last year they played "The Golden Age of Leather" for the first time in the 12 yrs I been seein 'em! it was amazing!

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 2 October 2011 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

haha .. oh wait, it's EffingHAM, not EffingTON

anyway, stoked to discover the charms, etc

those Batoh/Espivall lps really rule (back on topic)

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 2 October 2011 03:29 (fourteen years ago)

After 3? 4? years I feel like I'm starting to warm up to In Stormy Nights.

was also mega-disappointed when I saw a 'new ghost album' and it was that swedish band. (tho they're fine, I guess.)
