boys love girls and girls love boys and we're all so fucking indie

spun from the glitch thread: at least one person i know has accused kid six-ought-six of pandering to this emo crowd with his lovey-dovey album titles (soccergirl?!) and songs ('just another kool kat out looking for a kitty' which is a really nice song i should say) and and and whatever. despite the fact that he is wildly popular with bitch-ass indiekids (and that he actually says 'yr') i think he's just working from the same enviroment of said indiekids while not making an active bid for crossover success and shit. so, what? can you realistically talk about yr dorky relationships without being emo or twee or indie?? is he just bringing to i-d-m the same that thing that emo brought to hardcore, fake(?) stabs at personal relevance? and isn't he cute as fuck?

ethan, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the important question in this mess is the one about if it's emo/indie to be realistic about girl-boy stuff. and if he's cute but like, come on, duh.

Why have I not head of this song, "Soccergirl"? Wouldda been great last week when I was making tapes...

kid 606 is an awful idiot who makes nondescript music.

i saw play with v/vm sometime and he acted like a 2 yr old, when the management asked hime to turn the levels down, he turned them all up to full as though he was in some fuckin packed out 'avin club (there 20 people there, in this cafe, with just people sitting at tables and chairs). they asked him again, he turns them up. eventually some random bloke from the audience pulled the plug out of the socket. he stormed off. it was shit. the music was boring shit too. apparently his newer stuff is better tho. i just object to this afx style publicity. i mean, afx might be a dick, but at least hes got a sense of humour.........

See, the thing is he'd actually use that as a song title. I actually lurve the guy's work, but I've never met or seen him live...

Not sure whether he's being emo, twee or indie or whatever, but I think The Kid's angle on IDM (more direct stabs at humor, pathos, etc.) is the right way to go at this moment. The emotional end of it needs to expand, and the more IDM moves away from academia and toward the pop song the better off it will be (uh, um, I think, maybe, could be... have to think about this more.)

See also the new Bodgan Racsinski record where he gets all sad and weepy and warbles off key, "Please don't make me cry." A half- finished (and soon published) Pitchfork review of the new Bogdan addresses some of these questions. Love the comparison about emo-> hardcore = Kid 606->IDM. That sounds right, if it a little scary, b/c I think I like the electronic version of emo quite a bit.

Mark, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think there is an amount of emotion and poppiness already prevalent in the IDM scene with guys like ISAN, Boards of Canada, and Herrmann and Kleine. I don't think that the Kid really co opts any of that in actual song writing and he only really takes it at face value as a measure to lure people into his music. I'd go so far as to say that the Kid is working from all angles of the independent music scene to come over and listen to his work.

Check out 'chart topping radio hit'- that's the song that all the hardcore kids would be into.

Check out 'it'd take millions in plastic surgery to make me black'- that's the song the underground hip hop kids could be digging on.

Check out Hrvatski's remix of the kid on 'catstep'- that's the track that all the IDM purists are going to wet their pants over

Check out his newest ep's- pandering to the german academic style of IDM, coming out of the mille plateux.

Check out his remix of the Rapture and his emo-ish song titles- pandering to the indie and emo kids with his self conscious emotional side.

I think he's a pile of crap, musically, but amazing stylistically and promotionally.

Todd Burns, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one thing i like about kid 606 and friends (hey that could be a record title) is that they seem to be initiating a shift away from this hazy nostalgic wistful half- remembered childhood bullshit which seems to be the only emotion idm has trained itself to evoke, and more towards just teenage dorks fucking around. which, hey, is what emo and indie and all that shit is too, and is more notably not a bad thing just taken as-is. maybe we should say idm is shifting more towards garage rock?

also should note that 'it would take millions etc' is essentially just ma$e's 'feel so good'. which i think is tight, but the the herbish ilm massive seems to think is a bad thing. no offense to the herbs though, it's all love.

Check out Hrvatski's remix of the kid on 'catstep'- that's the track that all the IDM purists are going to wet their pants over

If you mean Hrvatski's "Catstep / My Kitten / Catnap Vatstep DSP remix", then it's fearsome good, but that apparently has very little to do with kid606 and almost everything to do with Hrvatski. Unless you count Max Tundra, Vat's my favourite Tigerbeat6-affiliated artist by miles, possibly because he's kind of more old-fashioned and more traditional. Whatever, that remix was one of the most exciting tracks I'd heard in ages, I played it on repeat so many times (shame I didn't feel the same way about the rest of Kid606 and Friends). I hope the promised album happens soon.

In the meantime, also check out the genius of Blitter vs Hrvatski - "Nuclear Cats Get New Homes" [*] and Hrvatski's own "Epoxy" as prime examples of why I'm looking forward to the album, then listen to the blehness of whichever of the original 606 tracks you can find for further evidence that this rumour is probably accurate.

I will hopefully have more thoughts on kid606 and his emo-ness or otherwise when it's stopped being 6:30am and I've finally got some sleep. (I might sound like I'm dissing kid606 in this post; I'm not really, I do like some of his stuff, but I also think he's somewhat overrated. But, damn, he's 6 months younger than me and he's been putting out insane records for years. Yeah, I'm jealous when I think of it like that...)

[* I am officially a sucker for any idm tracks featuring cat references. Luckily, there are lots of 'em. Isn't "Songs About My Cats" just the best album title ever? Planet Mew, do what you do to me, I haven't been the same since my teenage lobotomy...]

The emotional end of it needs to expand, and the more IDM moves away from academia and toward the pop song the better off it will be.

Mark, I'm going to assume that you mean this not in a formal sense (of IDM tracks being structured and arranged more like pop songs), but in the sense that tracks need to be constructed with some notion of resonance-with-listeners in mind--not just with the intention of making a racket or engaging in a formal exercise of sorts. In which case I agree with you (I think). It's strange, your P-fork review led me to purchase the new Fennesz record, which, although it's quite abstract in a formal sense, resonates quite deeply with me. I find it highly moving and engaging, and it leads me to do more when I listen then just marvel at the sonics. Perhaps it's just 'cheap' nostalgia (something Boards of Canada--a personal favorite--are often accused of), but fuck-it-all, I wasn't even alive in the 70s, so it must be more than just that. Who knows.

Another thing, I think Kid 606 is a wiseass who has a great feel for the nuances of indieslang and emospeak, and his titles are just trying to be funny, to speak to those cliches that pervade emo/indie. You don't have to be part of the emo scene to know an emo song title when you hear it, so it's not like he's pandering to a crowd. I see it more as making fun of emo; I mean, he has a song called "In love with all you are and forever maybe as if my soul depended on it to survive," for christ sake. If this is meant to be serious, then I don't know what to say. I still like his music, though.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, i was going to start a kid606/tigerbeat6 thread, so hey this looks like the place. i'm not convinced by kid606's 'inject rock'n'roll into idm' schtick. *look we're not nerds honest* shit. his way of approaching all of this smacks a bit of macho bullshit. he raises some good points about the 'safeness/comfort' of that whole scene and i know it raises his whole profile and shit but it seems like hes trying to be like this jock or something. i think its some kind of reaction to a perceived 'geeky' idm stereotype that isn't necessarily true (at least in the uk)

i think bogdan raczynski is streets ahead of kid606 in this whole 'emo/idm' business (if thats really what it is) (haven't picked up the new bogdan yet tho). and, from the tigerbeat6 stable, cex seems to me to have come up with the goods more consistently than six0hsix. i haven't heard a great deal of the kids stuff, and i'd appreciate some pointers to the best material, but what i've heard is like, ok, nothing more.

anyone heard the double cd tigerbeat comp? haven't got through it all yet, but feeling underwhelmed by it at the moment.

gareth, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, a question - I heard them playing a Bogdan Raczynski rec in Rough Trade recently and it sounded uncannily like 'The Richard D. James' alb - is all his stuff that derivative?

, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

um, yes.

well, it is like a harsher take on rdj album, i suppose its 'drill'n'bass' personified. it has a very lo-tech feel. i haven't heard the new album yet, although it is quite likely i will buy it this week. i also don't have his last album, which i believe might be more this emo-drill'n'bass thing. the first 2 lps are what you describe.

gareth, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On new Bogdan only about 25% of the tracks even have beats. Lots of accordian, fair amount of trumpet. A departure, for sure, but still a heavy Aphex influence there, mostly w/ that damaged tone.

Mark, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clarke -- You summed it up nicely, yes, I'm talking more about making music with listeners in mind. Re that Fennesz, that's a good idea of what I'm talking about. Compared to Plus 57 degrees...Endless Summer is pure pop, and all the more emotionally engaging because of it. (Plus 57 is great, but very dense noise good for a more occasional listen.)

Mark, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you know, my question doesn't have anything to do with anything about kid 606.

ethan, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now it does. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and isn't he cute as fuck?

I personally feel that Dave Matthews is not that attractive.

Is kid 606 and Planet 606 the same person producing different music?? Planet 606 has been playing electro for ages now and I was wondering if they are 2 of the same people?? Although p606 music isnt indie, its quite cutting edge/wall of sound breakbeat?? I saw planet 606 play live in Melbourne Australia about 4yrs ago and it was f'insane!! It was like their frequency had pierced everyones mind there and the crowd were under a spell!! The music wasnt loud and in your face and stage wise you got a good view from every angle, their set-up was quite complex for its time too, lots of lap-tops running virtual synths, midi wands...... Can anyone out there tell me whether these are the same 2 bands?? Kid606 and Planet606??
