Name a band, anything - I'll connect it back to the Byrds. The Byrds are my genesis of everything.

I've not heard that - link me up and I can link it back to the Byrds.

Teletubbies - Alien Voices on PTA 109 from Younger than Yesterday - THE BYRDS.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Old Dirty Bastard - David Crosby - The Byrds!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a sickness!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Orbital. Public Enemy.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit! So obvious.

Now do Crass.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Vengaboys - "flying away, on Venga Airways" - Eight Miles High - The Byrds.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Orbital - Ambient Techno - Moog Raga - THE BYRDS

Public Enemy - Bob Dylan - The Byrds

The Move - The Byrds opened up for them in '69 during Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You're insane.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And the move did "So you want to be a r&r star" on the "Something Else" e.p.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah - well then - Southampton - Saints - "The Christian Life" - Sweetheart Of The Rodeo!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you not heard Moog Raga? Same thing.

Public Enemy - Chuck D's protest music set to beats -Bob Dylan - acoustic protest music - The Byrds covered Bob Dylan.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Pootie Tang

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Renee & Renato

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Vengaboys - two dancers - The Byrds employed two dancers that followed them when they toured in support of Mr Tambourine Man.

The Byrds are responsible for everything!

I blame the Byrds!

Hold on - I don't know those bands.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Crass - Bob Dylan - The Byrds!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Howabout The Birds (of Leaving Here and Ron Wood fame)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Saint, can you also connect everything *forward* to the Byrds?
(I notice Mahler and Reinhardt not 'connected' yet)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The Birds - presented a writ to the Byrds as they stepped off of the plane when they first arrived in England. The Byrds immortalised it with a couplet from 'Eight Miles High'.

Mahler - Roger McGuinn - asked Van Dyke Parks to process his keyboard sounds on 'Fifth Dimension' to sound like Mahler or Beethoven.

It's a sickness.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Mornington Crescent.

Oh, all right

"Marissa Marchant" - that's gonna get him...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Renee & Renato - one hit wonders - in a similar style of Sonny and Cher - who were the Byrds biggest rivals when they first hit the scene - going so far as to record a live performance of a Byrds song and copying it note for note.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Marissa Marchant - big ego - David Crosby - THE BYRDS!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, Bob Dylan is such a catch-all.

How about emo?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(Anybody else have the uncanny notion of Saint being Geir's evil twin? :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I know he's evil, thats for sure.

Emo - Husker Du - Byrds.

Dammit. I will think of something.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Rod Hull and Emu?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Emo - The Byrds - Why - initially was a plea for David Crosby's mother to let him do more stuff as a kid. 'She kept on saying no to me since I was a baby' before being changed. Keeping in line with emo's facility to complain about 'bad family situation' - i.e. - 'A Nice Family Dinner for Once from some gadawful emo band I had to review.

I'm just obsessed with the Byrds 'T'! I admit its a sickness.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not evil! I forgot about the Husker Du cover as well! Two reasons why The Byrds started emo!

Rod and Emu - they arent a music act, are they?

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

PS I don't set around and think about the Byrds but they were the first band that I got obsessed with when I was 12. Since then I mark everything against the Byrds. Sigh. Its a sickness.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Merzbow

anode (anode), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

re emu, no but you did say Name a band, anything...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok how about Janet Jackson?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

O.k., believe or not - McGuinn - in the late sixties - was obsessed with electronics. Check Moog Raga from Notorious Byrd Brothers. I've got a demo of the electronic album that he was bandying about. It actually is a pretty good proto-Merzbow thing. Ha ha! I'm sad.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Janet sampled Joni Mitchell who was a discovery of David Crosby from THE BYRDS!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I finally got it, yr Doomie

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats a good way to connect pretty much anyone in hip-hop via Q-Tip. I quit.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring back that lovely sympathetic "Geoff" guy, man!

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Kraftwerk

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy the Hoover - David Crosby

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

kraftwerk = electronic music pioneers, byrds = electronic music pioneers ;)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

missing foundation - restless record labels - golden paliminos - also on restless - featured mr stipe - byrds obsessive - who covered - a moby grape song - a band that opened up for the byrds many times.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough. nicely done.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

kraftwerk - the model was covered by ride - who, like sonic youth, owe their career to the byrds.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ars nova was a baroque act whom the move covered who in turn covered the byrds.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(wrong ars nova)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter Andre worked with LV - who sung on Gangsta' Paradise - which was a direct steal from Wonder's Pastime Paradise - with whom Gene Parsons (later Byrd) did session work with in the 70s.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

That last one knocked me out!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus Christ!!

(that was an expletive, Jimmy!!!!)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bacon Brothers

BrianB (BrianB), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hip Hop Byrds?

Public Enemy - covers - Buffalo Springfield for 'He's got Game' - The Byrds

De La Soul sample the Turtles - whose first big hit was a cover of a Byrds song - 'You Showed Me'.

Jimmy the Saints, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Raffi

Jandek

Rigt Said Fred

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Right Said Fred - Heavenly did a cover version ep of their songs - which included the Rockingbirds - who are were a thinly veiled Flying Burritos Brothers Band - who have covered Gram Parsons who was in the BYRDS!

Jimmy the SaintS, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

De La Soul sample the Turtles - whose first big hit was a cover of a Byrds song - 'You Showed Me'.

And that was the exact song they sampled too :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Raffi - 'Known at the start of his career as Dylan for the younger set' - played on pete seeger's comeback album - http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDSUB040401020425571091&sql=Aec6uak8k5m3v - pete seeger, in turn - gave The Byrds their third international number one - Turn Turn Turn!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Jandek - Low did a cover version of one of his songs for the tribute album - Low had the guy from America sing on one a Low album - America briefly charted with 'Horse with No Name' - which was a sound-a-like of CSNY - a group that featured David Crosby - OF THE BYRDS!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bacon Brothers - first album was produced by Bon Jovi - who in turn wrote songs for Cher's comeback album 'If I Can Turn Back Time' - Cher - for a brief while - and along with Sonny were the main rivals to The Byrds - having taped their performance of a Bob Dylan song - did it in the Byrds style and released it in direct competition to the Byrds.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

BRING IT ON!!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shaggs

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This one might be tenous but off the top of my head -

The Shaggs - rereleased on Revola in the UK - by Joe Foster - guitarist of the Television Personalities - who were inspired by the Byrds - and Revola went on to release numerous Byrds side projects and the Pre-flyte album.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this thread a cry for help?

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really. Its something to do when I'm bored in the office. So yeah, I guess so. Ha ha.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

There is always a hipster who kills any office fun with their 'cool' comments.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

No hipsterism here. You just kept on calling it a sickness, and I guess I got kinda worried.

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously I'm sick or else I would not be denying it! Arrggh. Must go and reread Johnny Rogan's bio of the Byrds.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

harveyw (harveyw), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney Spears.

Abby, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ, I thought I was obsessed. I'm like Jane Normal with Duran Duran compared to you, Jimmy the Biggest Byrds Fan Evah.

In fact, please connect Duran Duran to The Byrds.

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Duran Duran - named from a character from Barberalla - which stared David Hemmings - who did an underground movie - name escapes me - but will track it for you if you ask - which had a soundtrack which featured contributions from the recently departed Byrd, Gene Clark and the other Byrds. I think it was LA something something.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The score is called Happens - link here:

I'll do aqua and anal cunt tomorrow.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead Milkmen

Tessa Court, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Anal Cunt - covered the Smiths - on a tribute album - who in turn were, along with REM responsible for the jingle-jangle Byrds revival of the 80s.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

do King Crimson.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy, I am building you a shrine. Will you be my icon?

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha!

: - D

King Crimson - off the top of my head -

King Crimson made their debut at the Hyde Park concert with Rolling stones - opening - and I think the Hyde Park show was the memorial show for Brian Jones who was responsible for co-writing Eight Miles HIgh which was a big hit for THE BYRDS!

I'm saving Aqua for tomorrow.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

impressive, but it's CTA102. I'll assume that was just a typo. But don't to it again. That song means a lot to me.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It was a typo!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I@ve got Aqua and Dead Milkmen for tomorrow ... I won't use the same restless link again for the Dead Milkmen.

Ha!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That was off the top of my head.

I'll do a better one tomorrow!

too obvious and all with direct links.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

damn f0iled

pete s, Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'know, Jimmy, I was impressed you decided on this unique linkage between "my" band and "your" band. I thought maybe you'd use the Bob Dylan link you used upthread because Duran recorded a cover of "Lay Lady Lay" in 1995 for Thank You, but I'm seeing that you're trying for original links here.

I salute you, sir.

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)
