If I go and see Damo Suzuki live what should I expect?

Building on old glory or a slightly sad retreading of something that was over 30 years ago? Or neither? Chuck your knowledge at me. Ta.

A bunch of local musicians jamming with Damo Suzuki

With all due apologies for the blatant self-promotion... this.

Probably a lot of yawning.

His wang?

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds pretty interesting at any rate Mike, in the way that even if it turned out to basically suck you wouldn't feel totally cheated, if you get me. It's only £6 a ticket this time round, odd.

i saw him 2 years ago backed by cul de sac and it was truly one of the most magical live performances i have ever seen. cul de sac was an amazingly sympathetic pick-up band, but damo's stage prescence was just mesmerizing. i left feeling like i got a taste of what a can concert must have been like. afterwards, damo came out and hugged everyone in the (small) audience. which was weird.

Saw him in Detroit last year backed up by members of the Dirtbombs, the Witches, Outrageous Cherry, and the Immigrant Suns, and it was a really good show. I'm not a huge Can fan (don't hate me, I just haven't heard a lot of their stuff), but I thought the pick-up band gelled well wih Damo, and they played a really solid psyche set (two sets, actually).

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Who do you guys think should play with him?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Tough & Lovely.
And/or Andy Gill, if he's up for it.

I don't remember starting this topic. He was good when I saw him subsequently, although oddly enough, last night I saw the band who he teamed up with on that occasion and they were a very bland retread of 'Kid A' type self-importance

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 27 January 2006 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Did he come down and hug everybody?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 27 January 2006 12:51 (twenty years ago)

how does this work? what's the process he uses to choose and then rehearse with the bands he plays with in every different city?

damon kawasaki, Friday, 27 January 2006 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I think people can just visit his website and register their interest in being part of the Damo Suzuki Network.
I saw him in Edinburgh in Oct 04. Good show. First half was solid psych rock, a wee bit Pink Floyd, a wee bit Seeds, a wee bit early Can. Cool. Second half was weirder and dronier and very good as well.
I reviewed it for the Daily Record, my second proudest moment of journalist Trojan Horseplay.

stew!, Friday, 27 January 2006 14:28 (twenty years ago)

To answer the rehearsal question, I suppose it's up to the players to decide how tight they want to be, but most will have a good few practices before rehearsing with Damo on the day of the gig to get a feel for playing with each other.
There was a good article in the Wire from about a year ago where Damo talks about the Network.
I vaguely know a guy who played with him. Said it was an incredible experience, totally inspiring.
Wouldn't it be amazing if former members of The Fall (specifically those who played on I Am Damo Suzuki) backed him up?

stew!, Friday, 27 January 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

... and do most of the musician avoid the obvious temptation to try to sound like Can?

Dittoismus (Dada), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I think DS asks the local promoter to get a band together for him and doesn't rehearse with them at all apart from the soundcheck, and I could be wrong but I think I read that he discourages them from having more than one or two practice sessions together beforehand because he wants it to be as spontaneous as possible.

Here's an account from someone who was in the band for Damo Suzuki in Oxford in 2004, and here's one from one of the musicians for the Oxford gig this Tuesday, if you're interested.

[waits for the ILXor who saw the latter to post, because I only saw the first one]

is there a link to this article?
thanks for the other links, by the way!

damon k, Friday, 27 January 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Rebecca, were you waiting for me to reply?

Yeah, I went on Tuesday, and I thought it was amazing. Couldn't remember much about the one in 2004 (I think I was impressed it was improvised, but it didn't leave me with as much of a wow factor as the one this week). What I was particularly impressed with this time, were the little elements of the Oxford musicians normal playing style that crept in to the pieces the performed (I didn't know the musicians who played in 2004 so couldn't comment if that was the same that time).

The oxford lot had one practice the night before.

one year passes...

does anyone know who the band tomorrow in sf is guna be?

chaki, Thursday, 29 November 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

no clue about sf, but for Oakland is: Derek Moneypeny (guitar), Bonnie Mercer, Noel Von Harmonson, Alee Karim (bass), Tyler "Anti-Ear" Harwood (electronics), Robert McManus (drums)

Dominique, Thursday, 29 November 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

Detroit sounds like the most interesting place he plays. I'd like to hear him over people who are typically playing garage punk.

Woudn't it be awesome if Damo signalled a start and the band went straight into "Teenage Kicks"?

Apologies if this has been posted before. Just ran across it.
