I can connect everything back to Genesis

Obviously, claiming that The Byrds are the Genesis of everything must be wrong. There is only one Genesis, and they are obviously the Genesis of everything.

So, I take the challenge, just come on :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The Byrds

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Marc Acardipane

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Byrds pioneered the Moog synthesizer, which was later an important part of Genesis' sound.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

In the beginning God created the Peter Gabriel and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be Phil Collins: and there was Phil Collins. And God saw the Phil Collins, that it was good: and God divided the Phil Collins from the Peter Gabriel.

Huckadelia (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mutts on Fat Cat Records.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Marc Acardipane plays keyboards, which was always a very important instrument in the sound of Genesis.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Weak.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, the links are getting tenuous... John Lydon delivers vocals, which have always figured proeminently in Genesis' later oeuvre?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Baby Dodds.

('He played drums which was a very important instrument in the sound of Genesis'?)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Kind of hard to find links for artists not even found in All Music Guide :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That John Lydon link is considerably easier. Genesis were playing prog rock, and we all know that if it wasn't for prog rock, punk would never have been :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Faye Wong?

Jole, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis featured Phil Collins who scores Disney films, Disney being Walt Disney who was a NAZI.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis are named after the first book of the Bible, which has caused a lot of problems for the world over the years really hasn't it

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Faye Wong!

Jole, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The stevem: Your nazi link could have been a lot stronger if you had used Wagner, an obvious influence on both Hitler and prog rock :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Faye Wong is linked to a very typical adult contemporary MOR style, as may also be said about Phil Collins' output of the past 10-15 years.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Collins was a central element of American Psycho, which in its blank alienation, reflected many of the concerns found in Adult.'s lyrics.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ol' Dirty Bastard (trick question)

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ol' Dirty Bastard is part of the hip-hop scene. Hip-hop is heavily influenced by traditional West African music. Peter Gabriel is a huge fan of traditional ethnic music from all over the world.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That stuff about faye wong is rubbish. She's the chinese bjork.

Jole, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

No! Much easier: ODB covered 'Su Sudio' (or however you spell it).

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you didn't mean Baby Dodds isn't in the AMG???

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Weak.

Ol' Dirty Bastard did a Phil Collins song.

x-post

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

And btw how on earth is hip-hop heavily influenced by west african music? This is a serious question.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The focus on drumming and rhythm is clearly inherited from West African traditions.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

But not Phil Collins' focus on drumming, I take it? His drumming belonged to the Western European 'melodic' tradition, right?

xpost

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Collins, like most drummers should, kept in the background, just keeping the beat, and doing the occasional fill-in when the singer has a pause.

Unlike a lot of other prog bands, Genesis never had a lengthy drum solo.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!! I saw them on telly on the seconds out tour and they did indeed do a lengthy drum solo, and it was indeed tedious in thee extreme.

you should connect IQ back to genesis, Geir.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Educate thyself please for the love of god!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Phil Collins was star time. He had some crazy fills back in the day (not to mention Brand X!!!). I remember some interview where he was talking about listening to an old ass tape where he was playing Buddy Rich-esque snare solos for twenty min, and hardly believing that he used to be that kind of drummer.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

His drumming on the old genesis albums is awesome, actually.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The West African thing does remind me of a great Steve Coleman album though...'The Sign & The Seal', where he took his band to Cuba and recorded with a bunch of musicians largely schooled in the Yoruba folk music tradition. So it's really raw Afro-Cuban and bata music and singing (which is amazing by itself) mixed with jazz improvisation and occasional backbeats, and a couple of American and Cuban mc's get on the action. It's Steve Coleman, so it's predicated on concept, but the whole continuum really does mix together well.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly think DJ Shadow has sampled a Genesis riff. I'll get back to you on that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing is, John Lydon CAN be connected to Phil Collins, because there was an anecdote posted somewhere on ILM once about them meeting back in the day and getting along famously, which still blows my mind.

John Lydon - Martin Atkins - Jah Wobble - Brian Eno - Peter Gabriel - Phil Collins

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

James Brown also easy -- Steve Winwood plays on both James Brown's "Gravity" and Phil Collins' "But Seriously".

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)
