I remember tons of Enrico Caruso 78s stashed away in my family's attic. I'm not sure, but I think they had belonged to my father's parents. Occasionally they got played as a novelty, but that was about it. (They certainly couldn't have damaged the Sears* stereo we had, since it was already unmitigated junk.)

*I'm not really sure it was Sears, but that's a safe guess.

Reminded of because I'm finishing Stomp and Swerve.

I always thought Elvis sounded a bit like him in the high, loud last few notes of ballads.

1). One of the best things about early recorded music is the advent of an audience who had the likes of his talent to listen to.

2). Enrico Caruso: Sgt. Pepper's fat archetype?http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf300/f332/f33233nqxa6.jpg

There's a great ode to him on Gavin Friday's third album, Shag Tobacco and there's a great moment in "Heavenly Creatures" (per-"Titanic" Kate Winslet and pre-"Lord of the Rings" Peter Jackson directing) featuring the protagonist's father lip-synching Caruso songs into a fish (being used as a microphone).

Kind of the cultural touchstone for the firstwave of Italian immigrants (second wave: Mario Lanza, third wave: Dean Martin. No fourth wave as of yet. Fab Morretti?).

Everything But The Girl do a tune called "The Night I Heard Caruso Sing" which is just wonderful.
