I know it's not out for a couple of months but I just saw the title and date confirmed a couple days ago. I had originally heard third-hand that it would be out around January. I can't wait much longer, blah blah excitement.

anyone else give a damn?

She's pretty great, especially live, although I have to say I still like flightsafety best. (I haven't heard Crowsdell -- anyone know what they were like?) But I'll listen to anything she does.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

THere is a Crowsdell thread somewhere on ILM, maybe there are some other opinions.

I have both their albums and a couple 7"s. Kind of jangly-ish 90's southern indie rock and most of the songs are about childhood themes... her vocal style is very different than in the solo stuff. It's hit and miss I guess but I like most of it very well. Then again I will listen to anything she does so I'm not that objective anymore.

She's the best live performer I've ever seen.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the first time I saw her live I was completely unprepared -- I had flightsafety and liked it, but nothing on it made me expect that she was going to blow the doors off. And she did.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I was into her records for about a year before I saw her live (opening for sleater-kinney), I was looking forward to it and all, but I really had no idea what I was signing up for. Sleater-Kinney who?? Corin what??

I'm sad that I was so out of the loop musically I didn't know who she was until after her 3rd album came out. I could have seen her at least a couple times in PHX before 2002. But I guess I've made up for lost time.

Sean's Said the Gramophone blog just put up the Rachel's song that Shannonwright guests on. To tide you over...

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only seen Shannon Wright Live and don't have any of her albums, but I'd like to see the live show again and new album releases usually mean new tours, so I'm in.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc, yeah that's a great song. I've been waiting months and months tho to hear some of her new songs again. She played 4 or 5 new ones when I saw her open for Dirty Three in April... I should really hook up with people who tape shows.

here's to hoping the new year brings us more of this rock and roll:

With Thalia Zedek no less (who I've never seen live -- what's her recent stuff like? I only know some early Come). And Last Town Chorus, who a friend of mine keeps hyping. That May 16 show looks like a good bet.

spittle (spittle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, she's pissed off on the new album! = I'm going to see her on this tour!

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i am waiting for the rachel goswell album.

Saw her tonight. Listening to the new album right now. She's gotten even better live -- all those crazy hip swivels and kicks. And the rolling around on her back, of course. Pretty great. The drummer (Christina File?) kicked ass too. Thalia Zedek and Last Town Chorus were fun too, but Shannon was a whole other thing. As one guy I met there said, "I didn't know anyone could open their mouth that wide." She is kinda Munch-ian. Or Mummian. Anyway, she's great.

Saw her last night and was a smidget disappointed. She's added quite a few new moves, but then again she seems to have retired a others, only getting on the ground a couple times, and less keyboard mentalism. (And her drummer didn't put her head down when Shannon went solo.) There were a lot of early technical problems 4 songs into the set. And she didn't have her keyboard display light thing set up + too much lighting = lack of ambiance; a lot stompier than moody. My real beef is that I don't like the new album as much as Maps of Tacit which I kept hoping she'd play.

vleeetrmx21 (Leee), Sunday, 13 June 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

so where was the friday show? sf? just got home from seattle show and felt so lame about my city! hardly anybody there and couldn't clap enough for an encore. christina had her head down lots (?) anyway CF is so kickass. a cool part was when shannon rocked her guitar strap off and so had to kneel and roll for the rest of the song, and abandon the microphone. it worked because the room was so sparse that we could hear her fine. plus i got a crowsdell album. i was also bummed about no key-note visualizer, but i asked and she said it's pretty flaky now and so she doesn't take it out on tour.

ron (ron), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, SF. She did the sans microphone thing too, and that gave rise to goosebumps. Did you get the Crowsdell promo? Within the Curve of an Arm? They didn't have Dreamette did they?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 14 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i got the arm one. i haven't had a look at amg yet to see what the dealio is with crowsdell. i've been listening to it today and i actually like it a lot. the songwriting isn't as developed and she hasn't completely found her voice, but it's easier to listen to and more upbeat. that was the only crowsdell they had. they had dyed in the wool and the new one in terms of solo records

i am still a teeny bit giddy from fanboy talking to christina and shannon but mostly christina. it was also a relief to see a smile on SW''s face after the show - i get a little worried when she's singing and looking all tortured and whatnot

ron (ron), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean i just can't picture her singing "ask me if i care if you wear underwear" on any of her solo albums ;-)

She is releasing a collaboration album with Yann Tiersen (Amelie) in October. This sounds pretty intriquing....

Here is a bit of that link, translated by Google:

They exchange and divide their instruments (guitar and piano for Shannon Wright, piano, accordion and violin for Yann Tiersen), accompanied by marimba, violoncello, métallophone, accordion. Shannon opens its heart in texts with the colors chatoyantes like "Ode to has friend" or "Sound the bells". It goes up a tone on "While you sleep" and Yann scrapes its violin with violence. The on the other hand, "No mercy for She" to reveal Shannon whose brittleness is expressed with softness, for the first time.

Any opinions on the collab?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 25 November 2004 01:26 (twenty years ago)

It's REALLY bleak (surprise!) and maybe a bit tedious after 2 listens. I prefer "Over The Sun" at the moment. I should give it another chance, where there is time to breathe amongst all the new releases.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Over the Sun is too muddy and dank for me. I prefer the cleaner production on the collab, esp. the first track which is delicate and awesome.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago)

I hear where your coming from, but at the moment I am prefering the melodies on "Over the Sun." It would've helped if the records were released further apart - Shannon's melancholy can be overbearing if you are not in the mood.

I've been giving her thing w/ Yann Tiersen some more listens and I almost wish she just sang over Yann's arrangements instead of contributing her own guitar songs (these are just educated guesses) which (again) remind me too much of Over the Sun (whose melodies I don't find particularly appealing). To top things off, her melancholy doesn't affect me because 1. I don't listen to lyrics carefully/at all; 2. her over the top melodrama is what drew me to her in the first place.
