Your Favorite Gayest And Greatest Trance Buildups

Iio - Smooth (Airbase Remix)

The Nelly Furtado vocal resemblance is uncanny! The way she oversouls but doesn't go too high or histrionic is perfect for the drawn-out-ness of the buildup. I love the abruptness of the eventual beatdrop though, it takes like three seconds for everything to swirl up from a modest swamp of tasteful synth and beat any living trace of heterosexuality out of you (for the night at least).

Add your favorites.

'Access' defo tho i dunno how 'gay' it is (obv. was a huge anthem at nights like Trade tho, so i read)

i vote BT - 'Blue Skies (Delphinium Days)' and 'Deeper Sunshine' are more 'hippy' than 'gay' but the breakdowns and buildups are the most euphoric and powerful i've heard on a trance track that doesn't contain an overall dark atmos

obligatory mention of 'Cafe Del Mar' and Binary Finary's '1998' for GREATEST

Oh christ it's gotta be either:
Solar Stone - "Seven Cities" (hooj)
or
Rank 1 - Airwave

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 5 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking about "Airwave" too, the ultimate in bombastic breakdowns. The recent Push remix of that track is particularly nice in the sense that it's different, as it is unrecognizably noisy/dark/evil until the break, then that familiar huge synth riff bursts open out of nowhere, and the track quickly dives back into the same busy/noisy stuff as if nothing happened. Nice twist.

And most 1999-2001 sugary sweet trance tracks qualify anyway (Airscape's "Silence" remix, Solid Sessions "Janeiro", 4 Strings "Into The Night", Ayla "Liebe", Solar Stone "7 Cities", Angelic "Can't Keep Me Silent", Sander Kleinenberg "My Lexicon", etc), but most trance has become quite a bit more dark/driving in recent years without the enormous breaks/buildups. That Airbase remix has quite an (relatively) oldfashioned feel to it. Oh and also quite sugary sweet in the break: Andain - Beautiful Things (Gabriel & Dresden Mix).

Some of my favorite buildups (not necessarly "gay" though):
Alex Bartlett - Amnesia (Flutlicht vs Shokk Remix) (best of the German/Swiss style hardtrance buildups)
Alice Deejay - Will I Ever (Dutch Force Remix) (don't laugh! great dark-yet-euphoric buildup here)
Active Sight - The Search Of Freedom (OK that's still only out on whitelabel, but it's going to be huge. It keeps on building up intensity for minutes even after the central buildup/climax moment)

Oh, "Access" was as gay as it came (Reactivate 10 set the seal on that).

But if you want reeeel-eh reeeel-eh Gay, then I nominate:
Waiting For The Night (Hex Hector remix) - Jennifer Lopez.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That's more of a house thing though (Hex Hector, Victor Calderone, Thunderpuss, and all that garbage)?

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Not *all* garbage Siegbran, as the remixes of "Wish I Didn't Miss You Anymore" proved I think.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 6 February 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite. *Some* of that Hector/Calderone/Thunderpuss stuff can have its moments. As for that Hector/J.Lopez breakdown, I guess I'd categorise it more as poppified epic/prog house.

As for more strictly defined Trance... most of it (e.g. Van Dyk/Energy 52/Da Hool Ibiza trance, Goa/psy-trance) passed gay dancefloors by. Blu Peter & Ian M's mid-90s sets at Turnmills probably came closest.

Breakdowns aside, I'd say the gayest Trance record ever was Age Of Love.

mike t-diva, Friday, 6 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Age of Love! Totally OTM. I forgot about that for ages and listened to it a week ago for a laugh, and found that it still soudned damn good (the 'watch out for stella' mix, natch).

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 6 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

chase the sun - planet funk

Chief Boabab (Chief Boabab), Friday, 6 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

anything by Da Rude

Chief Boabab (Chief Boabab), Friday, 6 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

While not exactly trance, Thunderpuss' remix of Cooler Kids' "Morning Star" is definitely gay and great. What's the verdict on Cygnus X?

OMG re: 1998. This guy I used to party with first heard that spun by Lisa Lashes at some outdoor thing and of course it became so ubiquitous we heard it at nearly every subsequent party. He would exclaim, "Oh shit, Lisa Lashes! I LOVE this one!" I'd insist it was Binary, every time, but he'd always say, "Uh, are you sure? I'm pretty sure it's Lisa Lashes." This happened so often I said I'd show him the bloody tracklisting on the CD I had but whenever this opportunity presented itself he proclaimed that he "didn't give a fuck anyway." Eventually he started calling it by the real name but never admitted being wrong.
