...is pretty cool (no, really). It looks like it oughta be an Echo and the Bunnymen video from 1982 or thereabouts. No porn stars or nothing!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't seen it but i'm more than sure it's gonna suck ass.

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like it oughta be an Echo and the Bunnymen video from 1982 or thereabouts.

That plus Robert Smith = they're almost worth my interest now!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, otherwise they can kiss my natural black ass :)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The visuals don't really match the sound, though. It's like they're striving for the Cure's heroically low budget "Charlotte Sometimes" clip, but it still sounds like mawkish, rote pop-punk.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

they've gone all emo.

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like they're striving for the Cure's heroically low budget "Charlotte Sometimes" clip

HARGLEHACK!

(Sorry, it's just that I'm very glad that was the only time the made such a video; I just dream what Tim Pope would have done.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Footnote: the same house that appears in the "Charlotte Sometimes" video also appears in the video for Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes" and Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart", i believe.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

someone told me that the video looked like an alkaline trio video, but i wasnt aware that a3 were played on either mtv or fuse.

the video for "feeling this" reminds me of the japanese cult horror film called 'Battle Royale' -- so i liked it. I also prefer Blink when Tom sings rather than when Mark does.

Sarah Natalie (Running from Taxes), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

They should be hung from high hooks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yah man heres the bottom line YOU CAN USE ALL THE HIP GOTHY IMAGERY AND DRUM AND BASS LOOPS YOU WANT.. YOU STILL WRITE SUCKY ASS MELODIES AND ANNOYING FUCKING VOCAL LINES

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Chaki wins a beer!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

A whole fucking six-pack I think.

(Where's Sterling on this thread anyway?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

this is like Peter Cetera wearing a Bauhaus shirt in that Chicago video!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, you are still residing it La Maison de la Chien!!!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

*coughs, hiccups, and farts simultaneously*

if that's true, then there is nothing like that.

rainman (rainman), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It is true. In the video for "You're the Inspiration" he wears a white shirt with the cover of the "Bela Lugosi's Dead" 12" on it (a still from from "the Cabinet of Dr.Caligari").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't seen the video for this, but I'd enjoy the song a lot more if DeLonge didn't prounce "my head" as "moy yed." WTF?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame California for that syndrome.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I'm used to forgiving a bit of faux-brit from the OC, but out of fuckin' nowhere it sounds like he's gonna have a jolly holiday with Mary Poppins.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

To his defense, hasn't he always sung like that? I seem to remember that same whiney pronuciation on "All the Small theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeengs" etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

whiney is fine and dandy. but pronouncing the word "head" as "yed" is another matter entirely.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Just saw this vid again. Christ, Tom's pronuciation is indeed hugely irritating.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord, this one's tearing me up. It sounds so close, SO CLOSE to being really great, and then they start ruddy singing... I sit through Tom deLonge's yowling, and I find myself wanting to like this Blink-182 song, but it's that voice, those lyrics... I think I love this song. Then I hate it. Then I love it again.

Single of the year thus far, probably.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

SO CLOSE to being really great,

Wha? It's about as close to being great -- let alone listenable -- as Rekjavic is to New Guinea. You're HIGH!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
I just realized that it might be a good thing that Tom DeLonge says "yed." Otherwise this song would have me bawling every time I hear it.

On a side note, if it wasn't for the pandering misogynist homophobic cutesypoo bullshit of "What's My Age Again," which I will NEVER like, I'd say their eventual Greatest Hits comp would be a must-have.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that Tom who whines? I can't tell 'em apart what with the lip piercings and all. The song is actually not as sucky as I thought until he starts in.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a pretty good song. I agree though that whoever sings the "moy yed" should let the other guy do the singing.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Just discovered this song and have to admit, dodgy California enunciation and all, I love it.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The album is actually really good. Am now finding his singing kind of charming after long exposure...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course it's good!! it's great!!! all you h8ters should go and like it. like Blink or you stink!

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never liked anything by them, but I really like the music in this song. Whatshisnuts absolutely ruins it with his whiny nasal voice and annoying delivery though.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I'll just have to stink, despite repeated showers

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I may have changed my mind on this video after finally noticing the unshaven armpits on some of the girls. I have a thing for hot girls that know how to stink (see: GuRL SwEaTT thread.)

LC, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It is either one of the best or one of the worst things I've been exposed to clearly, that much is clear. The little drum fill after "missing you" is great. I am amused by the way that the song seems to call out "check out the drumming!", when it's not that exceptional. I mean, it's probably technically better than That Bit of All The Small Things, but still not as good.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

haha "no porn stars" = Schmuicide Girls instead.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone get the idea that the drum stuff in the track is the other two's way of appeasing the drummer? If you compare Box Car Racer to the Transplants, its obvious that there's somewhat of a schmism in the music they want to make, and in a BCR-esque song, they give the drummer a token section just so he doesn't feel left out.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that was exactly the impression I got.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Hearing this makes me want to listen to a Smashing Pumpkins "Melon Collie"-era ballad.

Simon H., Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

whatta beautiful melody. it's made me develop a crush on the emo-looking one.

lid, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
This song is great i can honestly say that it is one of their better ones probably second to Dumpweed, Dysentery Gary or Adams song. i love it i can listen to this song on repeat all day long. Toms voice truly adds to the eerie effect of a haunted mansion. The "moy yed" part tom sings sound much better than if he were to sing "my head" it wouldnt go well with the rhythm. I hope i have put you all in your place

Saam Beard, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If it werent for all you shitty little americans this song would reach number 1 for many weeks

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

"you're already the voice inside moy yeeeddddddddd..." This song would be so awesome without vocals.

I can't think of any other song with the same beat as this track. Are there any?

Roz, Thursday, 26 July 2007 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

i actually like tom's singing here... i like the bratiness a lot, though "hear your voice of treason" is an awful awful line.

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 26 July 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

though if mark sang the whole thing it woud obviously be better.
i just don't think tom makes this unlistenable or anything nearly that drastic.

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 26 July 2007 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

I hate Tom's voice but at the same time, it's kind of part of the band's charm. Mark's voice is so nondescript, no one would pay any attention to these guys without Tom's whine (if only?). I'm just saying this particular track would be so much better without the singing. So distracting.

That drumming though - it's not even really outstanding, just not something I've heard before anywhere. Really wouldn't mind if this became the new "Be My Baby"/"Just Like Honey" beat.

Roz, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

wait WAIT, the *best bit* of this is when Tom arrives, seemingly on horseback, mewling "Whereareyew...andeyemseosowrry"! I fucking love this song, unapologetically.

ps. u r all gay.

the drumming reminds me of "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover". i loves it.

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

seemingly on horseback, mewling

Haha mewling is such an accurate description of Tom Delonge's singing.

Roz, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's the interplay of the two voices that makes the song work.
