they came and partied with us after and were all very nice and i played them vitalic ok cowboy and they liked it and took the copy with them. so i fully expect the next record to be influenced by poneys and newman and ...!!!!

I was wondering what was going on with this! I kept checking the K page every few weeks, but there was no mention of Mahjongg. I've only listened to the first few seconds of the first track streaming on the link you posted, but I confidently predict that this record will be outstanding and criminally under-heard, just like their ep and lp before it.

Some motherfucker at the record store I frequent put a post it on the front of the LP saying (paraphrased) "for people who like Timbaland, Prince, Talking Heads, Suicide and Fela Kuti". So I bought it. And it's adequate for what it is (i.e. post-punk variation #519), but talk about setting someone up for disappointment and heartache.

"Those Birds are Bats" is excellent. It sounds lo-fi, like people having fun in their garage. And it's catchy as hell-- even if it does sound a bit like "Do You Wanna Dance." I dig.

i saw them in concert not too long ago. i was honestly one of the most insular shows i've ever seen. people were utterly confused by them-- and they didn't play 'birds are bats' which was probably the one song a newbie could latch onto.

One of the main songwriters (Dude who sings "Problems" and some other songs) didn't want to tour, one of the other main songwriters (Dude who sings all the other songs) moved to Nashville and only tours sporadically. They filled in the void with guys from Waterbabies, a different band that shared members with Mahjongg. Mahjongg and Waterbabies are practically identical now, appearance-wise. They maintain that there is a difference, though. I haven't seen either band in some time (they are in chicago and I am in Missouri) so I can't really elaborate on the differences. I don't want drama!

I was a bit disappointed by this lot when I saw them last year - they're back in about a month though and are apparently also going to DJ a juke house set after they play, so that's nice

I bet if "Problems" came out in the early 80's it would be a heavily sampled rap beat.

In other news, I saw an Ex-member of Mahjongg read poetry and perform a skit called "The Victim."
I liked the poetry best.

The Miami Knights tribute track is amazing

The Long Shadow LP is tremendous. Hoping they're as good live as I expect they could be.

Some friends are going to support them next December at their Corsica Studios gig - quite curious to know about Mahjongg live too.
