Let's talk about Mahjongg

Anyone heard this band? This was a particularly harsh review to read:

http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/1244

Especially this part, "True, “Turf War,” the final song on Machinegong, has a bracing, resounding beat that you could jump up and down to if you were really pressed to move along to the music, but I expect that you could experience that beat pulsing through you just as well sitting perfectly still on a bar stool. Or perhaps I am just defending my own refusal to do anything at concerts but stand with my arms folded."

That's a little frustrating to read. I went to a Mahjongg show earlier this year and it was one of the best concerts I saw all year.
Anyone else heard this band? What do you think?

Zach Scott (feedback), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh... it's a band!

Jole, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard they're touring with Parchisi, Pinochle, and Othello.

Just heard some of the new record. Anyone have this yet? Some of it sounded a little like OutHud, other bits more like a hyperkinetic version of mid-80s Wire. It was okay! So what's the deal wiv 'em?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I like what I've heard.
I'd like to hear more.
I'd like to see them live.
But no show yet for Deeeetroit.

Mahjongg played a show here in Columbia in an old Cattle Auction house.
It was a lot of fun and they played a brand new song that got me by the brain banana.
This is good band.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Some motherfucker at the record store I frequent put a post it on the front of the LP saying (paraphrased) "for people who like Timbaland, Prince, Talking Heads, Suicide and Fela Kuti". So I bought it. And it's adequate for what it is (i.e. post-punk variation #519), but talk about setting someone up for disappointment and heartache.

Matt Lemay's review of a Mahjonng show in Providence is nice.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

In 2002, I was orchestrating a SEPTEMBER 11TH FREEDOM JAMBOREE in Victoria, BC. Mahjonng was to play the show, but couldn't make it across the border. They sound like Tall Blonde, I think.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Thursday, 26 May 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I heard about that fracas.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 26 May 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I heard they're touring with Parchisi, Pinochle, and Othello.

I'm really hoping my band (Canasta) gets to play with them sometime.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 26 May 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

they played here (the LR-white water tavern show above) and it was very very good. and having only heard a bit of the recording, not much what i expected. deceptively simple or deceptively intricate. hard to tell. bang bang bang.

they came and partied with us after and were all very nice and i played them vitalic ok cowboy and they liked it and took the copy with them. so i fully expect the next record to be influenced by poneys and newman and ...!!!!

"Those Birds Are Bats" = Brilliant

People will inevitably hate it, but I'm in love. I'm trying to create a music video for it.

I was wondering what was going on with this! I kept checking the K page every few weeks, but there was no mention of Mahjongg. I've only listened to the first few seconds of the first track streaming on the link you posted, but I confidently predict that this record will be outstanding and criminally under-heard, just like their ep and lp before it.

"Those Birds are Bats" is excellent. It sounds lo-fi, like people having fun in their garage. And it's catchy as hell-- even if it does sound a bit like "Do You Wanna Dance." I dig.

res, Monday, 7 April 2008 02:35 (seventeen years ago)

I've been calling it 'sludge pop'

Tape Store, Monday, 7 April 2008 02:36 (seventeen years ago)

I can't believe it's been 4 years since I've been posting here, and I'm still class B. Shit, I gotta level up sometime.

Z S, Monday, 7 April 2008 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

the rest of this album sounds nothing like that song, unfortunately.

i just saw them live the other day and it was a bizarre experience. never seen anything like them, really

BUT "RISE RICE"

Tape Store, Monday, 21 April 2008 02:44 (seventeen years ago)

Mahjongg should create an album based around catchy hooks and mindboggling percussion.

Surmounter, Friday, 27 June 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

i saw them in concert not too long ago. i was honestly one of the most insular shows i've ever seen. people were utterly confused by them-- and they didn't play 'birds are bats' which was probably the one song a newbie could latch onto.

res, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:32 (seventeen years ago)

i = it

res, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:32 (seventeen years ago)

one of their keyboardists is the most ham-radio operator looking guys i've ever seen

res, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

The band you saw in concert is different from the band that made the record.

Trip Maker, Friday, 27 June 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

NO MORE DRAMA

Tape Store, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

One of the main songwriters (Dude who sings "Problems" and some other songs) didn't want to tour, one of the other main songwriters (Dude who sings all the other songs) moved to Nashville and only tours sporadically. They filled in the void with guys from Waterbabies, a different band that shared members with Mahjongg. Mahjongg and Waterbabies are practically identical now, appearance-wise. They maintain that there is a difference, though. I haven't seen either band in some time (they are in chicago and I am in Missouri) so I can't really elaborate on the differences. I don't want drama!

Trip Maker, Friday, 27 June 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

I was a bit disappointed by this lot when I saw them last year - they're back in about a month though and are apparently also going to DJ a juke house set after they play, so that's nice

I bet if "Problems" came out in the early 80's it would be a heavily sampled rap beat.

In other news, I saw an Ex-member of Mahjongg read poetry and perform a skit called "The Victim."
I liked the poetry best.
