Kranky - What is Up With that Bitch??

I like Charlamides - good part of that NEW WEIRD AMERICA scene but as I go through my Kranky promos most of it is tedious wank - Tomorrowland, Deciballand, Xanaxland - people - tell me WHAT THE FUCK IS GOOD ON KRANKY THAT WILL MAKE ME BUY IT - ALA - CHARLAMIDES ... which is like being in god's womb and being penetrated by beautiful drones.

I need something to chill out. ITS BEEN A STRESSFUL WEEK/WANK.

Oh yeah - the Jessica Bailliff stuff - I really like that. Help me. Guide me through Kranky.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

good kranky: low, labradford, the first spiny anteaters album, charalambides..

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

jimmy the saint i think you and doomie would get on like a house on fire

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Roy Montgomery, Outhud, Windy & Carl (tho the Kranky releases aren't as goods as much of the other stuff) is all good and recommended

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's Charalambides, not Charlamides, and they are in no way part of what the Wire has dubbed the 'New Weird America" scene - they've been around too long to be dissed / conveniently catalogued like that.

I agree with you that Kranky have put out a lot of boring shit (though boring is better than awful, isn't it?), but they brought Low to the attention of the mainstream, so if you like Low (I don't) you gotta give them props for that.

The middle batch of Labradford records are great, there's some Stars of the Lid stuff that's nice, and I recall really digging one of those Magnog albums in college. Overall, a decent label.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Charalamides Charmaine New Weird America - the ONLY REASON I CHECKED IT OUT IS CAUSE OF THE NEW WEIRD AMERICA CONNECTION!! boring is INFINITELY WORSE than awful!!! Cheers on the tips dudes!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

As Roger just said, there doesn't really seem to be any connection, but carry on

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

No connection? There is a connection. An article I read connect them. The article was brilliant, BRILLIANT! It got me EXCITED about this sort of music. So yeah I will carry on! Excitement over measuredness, anyday, mate!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ON REFLECTION I AGREE!!!

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I NEED TO CHILL OUT. I'M OFF TO SEARCH THE LOW ALBUM ON KRANKY! I'M IN A HIGH CAPS STATE OF MIND!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

DEPENDING ON WHICH AREA OF THE WORLD YOU LIVE IN THERE IS MORE THAN ONE LOW ALBUM RELEASED ON THAT LABEL!!!!!!!!

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ARRGGGHH! I FEEL FOR THAT KID FROM SOUTH PARK WHO DRINKS TOO MUCH COFFEE!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Then you're all wrong for Kranky. Thems skag kids, most.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be Craig to your Tweek if you want *half-arsed fight ensues*

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a lot of the good choices have been named already -- I'm a Kranky fanatic to an extent, have all the first 50 releases or so but after that it's much more sporadic. Roy Montgomery, Stars of the Lid, Labradford, Windy and Carl = yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oddly enough that Windy and Carl thing put me right off Kranky

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Kranky is OVER. Kinky is the wave of the future!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oddly enough that Windy and Carl thing put me right off Kranky

Hey, you're mean.

Kranky is OVER. Kinky is the wave of the future!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

so THAT's where my hair appliances have got off to!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Astounding!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

was there a rough guide to kranky done?
if not, anyone on for doing one?
ned?
i used to kind of follow kranky, but i haven't in years,i'd be curious to hear a cd-r worth of stuff....

robin (robin), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There is always the Kompilation sampler they put out, which serves broadly the same purpose (until 1998 at any rate)

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

whoever it is that calls himself "Low Res" has a Kranky persona as well though I've never heard it

the Lo Res EP is probably my favorite techno EP of all time, like Heiko Laux but juicier and softer

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone heard the Growing CD?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I "dj'd" a Young People show where Growing opened up, it was pretty standard ebow/feedback drone, 2 gtrs on top of a cd-r of more of the same. It was good if you like that stuff.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought the growing record was really disappointing; the fakejazz review led me to expect something more varied. it's nice enough but I still put mine up for sale on amazon. beautiful packaging though!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadamah, people.

hstencil, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ALASTAIR FUCKING GALBRAITH ! ! !

Pious Twin (abennett), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

keith fullerton whitman "playthroughs" is very nice. i went through a period of liking it, and then REALLY liking it...there is another kfw due out in the spring, i think. i will third (fourth?) outhud.

marcg (marcg), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Did ALastair record for Kranky? Nothing that I can recall. If he did it would easily be the best release on that boring-ass label.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh la sorry i was just making a suggestion inna charalambides stylee. NEXT BEST WAY reprazent yo. (all 2[?] of their releases)

Pious Twin (abennett), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY I LIKED THAT GROWING RECORD!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

jimmy the saint i think you and doomie would get on like a house on fire
-- the surface noise (electricsoun...), February 4th, 2004 2:53 AM. (later)

i've just worked out why too :)

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh??

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, nothing

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yes yes yes Kranky did the Dadamah compilation! That's a heck of record, though I guess Majora deserves more credit? Wanna burn it for me, Joel, I only have it on tape. I also remember really loving Jessamine untill I listened to the first album again a few weeks back. It has it's moments, but a bit of a, how shall I say, "one trick poney."

see, that's the name of one of the songs!

The first Dissolve record was good, Roy Montgomery and somone else? Was that Kranky?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

first bowery electric lp. roy m is good too, but best stuff not on kranky

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

just tangent, but if you're a fan of Roy Montgomery's solo delay guitar 4 track stuff, I highly recommend the record Masai Sleepwalking by George Harassment, one of the various pseudonyms of the Homosexuals. There is some truly beautiful low-fi solo guitar stuff that reminds me of those Montgomery records(and reminds others of the Durutti Column as well.)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

dadamah, flies inside the sun, roy montgomery -- um -- um -- um

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan: sold. At some point. Remind me about it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Stars of the Lid's "Tired Sounds Of..." still ranks as one of my all-time favorite albums, even though I've never managed to stay awake for the duration.

Sam Hunt (robosam), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, but surely that is part of its appeal. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

re: george harassment...those tracks wil appear on the upcoming 3 cd hyped2death Homosexuals compilation(but not the recent recommended CD) The original record is much $$$$$.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

sure, Dan, I could burn that for ya. Don't know when I'll see you next, tho.

hstencil, Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Clear Horizon album is utterly fantastic (Clear Horizon = Jessica Bailiff + David Pearce of Flying Saucer Attack). Or was that included under Jessica Bailiff stuff.

dlp9001, Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

if it has roy m on it it's good, the rest is not. i just recently relistened to the first jessamine cd and really, what was i thinking when i thought it wasn't crap? i still like their single that came bolted together though, but that was on sub-pop.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish the bats album would come out already.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

on kranky?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Christmas Decorations CD was pretty great.

and yes that Jessamine 7" on Sub Pop was one of my college radio show standards "Your Heads So Small It's Like A Tiny Little Light" - think I'll go listen to that now!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 5 February 2004 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

there is that new dean roberts record on kranky. that forgives all tomorrowland blah etc.. and charalambides' next one "joy shapes" will kill you all.
past tense: dadamah, dissolve, flies inside the sun, roy montgomery, labradford, moments of jessamine, stars of the lid and jessica bailiff. there seemed to be a gap there where nothing really turned me on (is it just me or did low get quite boring after "long division"?)

jwd, Thursday, 5 February 2004 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I have indeed heard Joy Shapes and second jwd - it WILL kill you all. Their best since Market Square.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 5 February 2004 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The only Roy Montgomery I have is The Allegory of Hearing (on, uh, Drunken Fish perhaps?) and I thought that was a real lame old plodding donkey of a record. Any of the fellow's other offerings manage to work up more of a canter?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 5 February 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Temple V is great, but going on the above I couldn't guarantee you'd like it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

best roy montgomery is liverpool 82, a split with silver apples.

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Or there's this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)
