What's the last song you heard which you really, really, really hated - and why?

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We've done some variation on this before, but the grumpy ILM massive will surely have found new targets.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That fucking Drowning Pool song, "Bodies". It always sounds like it's going to be something interesting, then turns into strum-by- numbers radio-friendly grind-sludge nonsense without any menace or bite. It's the aural equivalent of a toy poodle with a switchblade. This is even more aggravating because there is a good track buried in there, but there are too many competing styles tackily mashed together to let the song speak for itself. One could easily believe that it was the work of a group of non-musicians who passionately loved the first Mr. Bungle album.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That Goddamn Alien Ant Farm cover. Why? Because it's shit. Shitty shitty shit. But yet people still like it. Do they think it's funny? Well, they are wrong. It's not funny, it's not done well, it just sounds SHIT.

And Travis. Travis, I blame you for all the ills of society, you fucking namby-pamby dullards. I blame you for Coldplay and Starsailor. How many times must we repeat this to those defenders of this cesspool of mundanity- I _know_ it's just background music, that's what irks me so much, it's OFFENSIVELY INOFFENSIVE, die die you bastards.

Yes.

emil.y, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't hate Travis' music. I hate them as PEOPLE. More so because their songs aren't even bad enough to hate, they're just...there. I think as human beings they're despicable, ugly, sniggering cowards. In fact, Frannie's dad should have beat his ass even more.

Last SONG I really hated was probably "Broken Home" by Papa Roach, although that was too funny to remain hostile for long. Staind, on the other hand...die, donut boy.

dave q, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'One could easily believe that it was the work of a group of non- musicians who passionately loved the first Mr. Bungle album.'

Now this I MUST hear! Portsmouth Sinfonia meets FNM? I'm there.

dave q, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That last Stereophonics song. Here at work there's a radio on the in background sometimes and that fuckin' piece of drival seems to be on 7 times a day. I hate them more than Travis.

David Gunnip, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

easy. Mariah Carey and Westlife doing a Phil Collins cover (wasn't it?). there is nothing conceivable that could be worse -- it's like someone actually did some research in order to make the worst record ever.

The Alien Ant Farm thing is getting there. why isn't this an obscure b-side? what's it doing clogging up the air waves and night clubs?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

powderfinger were on tv tonight, bluuuurgh - it was only a snippet and i nearly vommited.

Geoff, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now this I MUST hear! Portsmouth Sinfonia meets FNM? I'm there.

I should really amend my sentence to read more like, "Imagine the worst possible outcome of a band who adores Korn and Mr. Bungle equally but doesn't have the musical skill to pull off either of their styles convincingly." That's about what Drowning Pool sounds like to me.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Staind. And the Starsailor single. I'd love harm to come to them, as PEOPLE (as dq said).

Dr. C, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anything by nelly. "shimmy shimmy", my ass. e-i-e-i-fuck off.

ditto that for that ja rule song with "baby girl put it on me" in the chorus - hearing that annoying cookie monster voice try to carry a tune is downright PAINFUL.

your null fame, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

offensively Inoffensive. You rule. I freaking hate hate hate background music. No soul, no direction, no bite, no point, just kind of meanders around in it's soft core padded room with pillows of a world. God I Hate it. whew...that feels better. -H

Smarmyhank, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Barcelona's "Teenage Popstar" - imagine all the power and verve of, ooh, Baxendale, except this time turned against pop poppets. Like being slapped in the face with a damp tissue - and all the more annoying for being by people who are best-known for a novelty synthpop 'net-hit about computers. Better one-hit wonders than no- hit, eh lads?

I'm actually surprised at how much I hated it - so probably there's a strong element of wounded defensiveness there too.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jagged Edge's "Where's the Party At". Only heard the beginning "oh oh oh oh OH-OH!" part, and the ending bit, where they're singing (!?!), but it sounds like shit, it will continue to sound like shit, and will always be shit. Namby pamby R&B "singers" getting trampled by beats they don't deserve will always be shit. And if you're going to harmonize, DO IT RIGHT! Damn you, Nelly.

I also start chuffing whenever friends start ignorantly extoling the virtues of every classic rock / classic rock-sounding band this side of a K-Tel compilation. I mightily resist the urge to bust out my Superchunk CDs and implement them ninja-star style, or (worse yet) open my mouth and actually say what I REALLY think. Then I realize I'm a pretentious shite, and I take a chill pill.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Straind 'Its Been a While'... if only, seems to be on the radio/MTV everytime I switch on (+ then rapidly off again).

stevo, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As you probably already know I honestly believe Starsailor's 'Alcoholic' to be THE worst song ever written. Or at least I did until I heard that new Stereophonics single. Sometimes I think the deaf are lucky.

DG, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

People who hate "It's Been Awhile" are not to be trusted. It's like kicking a puppy.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heard this song by the Moldy Peaches that goes: "Indie boys are ironic..." over a lazily strummed acoustic guitar, sung in a shitty, no-effort-put-into-it voice with awful lo-fi recording to top it all off. I wanted to maim quite a bit; this snippet of fuckawful shit just embodied everything I hate about this strand of indie rock. No ambition, no sincerity, very little effort, just "there," "cute" without being charming, pisspoor, completely worthless. A friend of mine said something about "Well, that's just the way the [lo-fi] genre is." Well, I fucking HATE the lo-fi genre, then. Still, I have a feeling that if I went back and listened to and old Sebadoh record, I wouldn't want to kill quite as much.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, most Sebadoh will make you want to kill as well. As for Staind and the puppy philosophy -- you must excuse me, but if the puppy has mange and snaps at you, it can be treated accordingly.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

People who hate "It's Been Awhile" are not to be trusted. It's like kicking a puppy.

Exactly, we the listeners are the poor puppies being kicked by the godawfulness of the song.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

another vote for The Stereophonics - Mr Writer - horrid turgid vocals, it is just very painful to listen on the radio - indeed every Stereophonics track I have heard is bullshit bore songs rock - with the most disgusting vocal style and turgid trad rock formula - I call them Stereodullophonics.

Also all Turin Brakes tracks piss me off aswell particularly the one that goes "Savvvvve Meeee..Savveee Meeeeee.." ..vile and disgusting over emphasis on the vocal style and formula songs - I call them Turd- in Brakes - they even bet Starsailor as the most horrid brit guitar newcomers of 2001.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh and hate that Moldy Peaches track too.. wanky singalong indie.DESTROYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All of the new Jasmine Minks LP. Because sometimes the past is the past. Memories shouldn't be tarnished.

Lord God Almighty, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Moldy Peaches are just beyond terrible. I guess that is their shtick.

You know who is really pissing me off is DMX. I love how his cocky single on MTV is getting trounced by Jay-Z.

bnw, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, but I don't like 'Hola Hovito'. I think it was written with Super Bowl crowd participation in mind. The rest of the album is better though.

dave q, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm with dave q on this one. hola hovito is ok, but feels somehow older than the rest of the album

gareth, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm? "Hola Hovito" is grate - the perfect synthesis of Timbaland-style Jay-Z and Blueprint-style Jay-Z. Like, after he's totally crushed Nas under his feet on "The Takeover", he decides to go and have a dance on his grave.

The track that sticks out on the album like a sore thumb is "Jigga That Nigga", and even that is very good.

Tim, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Three cases.

1. A few months ago I was at Stevie T's place around midnight: ToTP repeat came on: Destiny's Child singing 45 'Survivor': utter abomination.

2. More recently, I was at Stevie's, c. 2am, and he played me the B&S Peel Session. A stupid rap about the Go-Betweens. Stillborn.

3. More recently still, I was watching ToTP and saw the Manic Street Preachers play 'Let Robeson Sing'. The awfulness of the lyrics almost plumbed a new depth. I hate their stupid jumping bass player very much.

the pinefox, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
How can u slag Travis? Travis are amazing Scottish Talent. They are the best band in the world. Noone can compare to them with their style and their annoying songs which make u sing along. To slag Travis is wrong, wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. So dont do it again and come back when ur as good a talent and internationally recognised as superstars. I thank you :)

BEER RUN
Mr Jones, You are a Legend, a brilliant musican who can kick any ones ass , who has done more for country then almost anyone, instead of having a sober good time w. people who like you , you do a dunken duet ( remember that d.u.i you almost died from ?) with Garth Brooks. I love you sir but ihave to tell you that cheap little whore is using you for cred. There is reasons why Johnny, Merle,Waylon and even Willie have refused to touch him w. a 10 foot pole (Willie has done singles w. Whitney Houston and wont do one with the evil marketring boy, does that tell you something ?) Really George , i am truly disgusted
