Surely they were worse than Dodgy?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh you mean the shit Liverpool band (aren't they all?) not the actually rather groovy late-70s French electro-schlockmeisters?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I never contributed to the '100 Worst Singles' Thread, but my two key entries would be

Reef: 'Yer Old' and
Space: 'Dark Clouds'

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hey 'Magic Fly' was cool. Scouse Space less so but 'Female Of The Species' is quite nice really.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

No they were not worse than Dodgy.. They were more 'weird' and geeky which was more interesting, and they had approximately 5 tracks which could be considered minor classics. These would probably be 'Money', 'Me and you vs the world', 'Female of the Species', 'Avenging Angels' and 'Ballad of Tom Jones' (throw 'Neighbourhood' in there if you're feeling fruity).
I do not own any Space records.

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They were better than Dodgy and a good deal more eccentric at least. Their biggest fault was they were too tongue-in-cheek and campy to the point of irritation. They had some good singles though ("Female of the species", "Dark clouds")

Michael B, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What is it about Liverpool that it produces all these wacky cunts who think they're so funny and eccentric and eclectic when in fact they are all SHITE?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe they're all Zappa fans

Michael B, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

...or Beatles fans, la

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles are the most important band in history. :-)

The Beatles are the most importan...........

The Beatles are the most important band in history. :-), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone else noticed Liverpool is full of graveyards?...or is it just me?

Michael B, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish you hadn't said that totally sounding like Liam Gallagher in my head. Too many levels of irony, I nearly leaked my brain out through my sinuses.

musto, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The cunts in Manchester aren't wacky by and large - still cunts of course but at least they don't think they're cute

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The actual records Space produced were worse than the ones Dodgy produced but Michael B is right - you always felt there was a chance that Space might luck onto a good record by some kind of zany Scouse accident, whereas with Dodgy it was going to be meat and potatoes all the way, or just potatoes and potatoes to be honest.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Zany, that's the word I was looking for

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

space were much better than dodgy, a lot more fun, and the NME was always horrible about them, so that made me like them too. and i liked them even more when i heard somewhere that their actual mission was to be the first act in history to have 10 novelty hit singles. they nearly managed it, kinda!
- female of the species
- neighbourhood
- me & you vs. the world
- dark clouds (errr "novelty")
- avenging angels
- the ballad of tom jones
- begin again

...lost track after that but still.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The bit where the guy sings "kick-ass angels" is actually the worst music moment of the entire 1990s I have just realised.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Worse than:

"I've never thrown my knickers at you"
"And I don't come from Wales"

?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

nnnnnnngggggggggggg

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to some nineties 'classics' t'other weekend -- 'Maxinquaye' and 'Screamadelica'. They sound well dated. I reckon you could do worse for 'worst moments'.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Screamadelica is rub now, and it was pretty rub then. Maxinquaye sounded stunning when I last heard it a couple of months ago.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

4 Space with Cerys of Catatonia The Ballad Of Tom Jones Mar 1998

20 Space The Bad Days EP Dec 1998

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to like both a lot, were prolly my fave albums. But Stussy refs make me wanna holler.

Poignant chronology there.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There are plenty of duff bits on Screamadelica but no moments where the meaningless laughable void that is human existence is exposed quite as nakedly as on "Avenging Angels" by Space.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I have just remembered that Space featured heavily on the soundtrack of godawful britcom Shooting Fish. Which obviously improved it no end.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna work on this. I read perhaps 10 pages about the crap music hall style bit in 'Avenging Angels' once. In that 'Nation's Favourite' book about 1 FM. 1 FM tried to protect the nation's ears by trimming down the music hall stuff. So I imagine if you went to buy it, it'd be even worse. Imagine.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Female of the Species" remains a great single, but the rest was trash.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i loved dark clouds. not hreard it for a long while.
begin again is great.

most people hate them because they were scousers,
nothing to do with the tunes.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"See the stars, well they're shining just for us" is a good corny line - sadly spoiled by being in the same song as "A tin of baked beans and a Woman's Weekly."

For all we know the songwriter's raking it in at this very moment with Valentine rhymes.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I think you'll find most people hate scousers because of Space

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Well bless my soul, it seems Space have released a new single

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001BH63W.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

and a new album

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001DD0E4.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

in the last few weeks and inexplicably no-one's bothered to mention it!

Dare I ask.... has anyone heard either of them?

Any good?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
How can you (whoever it was) dislike the line "a can of baked beans and a womans weekly" ?!? It's probably the second reason I love Space! The first being the line from neighbourhood "He's the local vicar, and a serial killer"

I nearly saw them live last year, but unfortunately for me I was in Norway at the time :(

Rohan Chadwick (thelevellers), Monday, 31 July 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

They were obviously worse than Dodgy, but lots of other acts were too.

Anyway Space were too much "fun" to be taken seriously as a great band.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 31 July 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Better than Dodgy, with a few great singles. Also I have their first two albums, though they are cleary not flawless, I haven't heard them since ages.

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

I thought they were a great band at the time, even went to see them live (I was about 16 though). A lot of fun, whatever they were.

Better than kickass angels, no?

afriendlypioneer, Friday, 15 February 2013 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

in the same way that gonorrhea is better than ebola, possibly

drier than a Charles Grodin quip (Noodle Vague), Friday, 15 February 2013 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

Aw c'mon. It basically sounds like "Female of the Species" by a dude who looks like he's in his 60s.

afriendlypioneer, Saturday, 16 February 2013 00:47 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, he's only 40.
