Vaselines. No question.

hmmm, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What Hmmmm said.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is useful.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, Vaselines it is. The acceptable face of twee.

mmmmsalt (Graeme), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Vaselines by a mile.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

One sketchy compilation does not a great band make, so Belle and Sebastian it's gotta be, fuckfaces.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

belle and sebastian. they write better songs and more of them.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm happy for you both.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I still hate Belle and Sebastian for the most part, though.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Vaselines has the good sense to stop while they were ahead.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Vaselines by a long shot. One SOLID compliation smashes many sketchy albums and singles.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Right on.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

both mostly good but prone to bouts of excess.

debut albums alone:
tigermilk vs. dum-dum = tigermilk

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle & Sebastian. I love lots of Vaselines songs (esp. "Son of a Gun," "Rory Rides Me Raw," and "Molly's Lips"), but Belle & Sebastian have even more that I think are really great, and they have some excellent lyrics. The lyrics of "The State I am In" and "Lazy Line Painter Jane" make them the winner for me.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

whatta battle! they could use their long stripey winter scarves as swords until nurse called them all into the drawing room for a cuppa and softboiled eggs w/ toast soldiers.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I like both. I guess I am more twee and indie than I thought.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the angle on the comparison, anyway? they're both scottish?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, why not josef k?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Because Josef K was clearly better than either!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i) The Vaselines are not twee.

ii) I don't like this kind of forced comparison, because the bands are too different - in sound, in longevity, in style, etc. As The Great Band Of Our Times B&S are obviously better, but this is no insult to the Vaselines.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

''As The Great Band Of Our Times B&S''

:...(((

God (jdesouza), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, I always thought there was something kind of twee about the Vaselines but that might just be me.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, you just mis-typed "Yes, I agree".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Pervtwee, both of them. The liner notes for the Vaselines rerelease on SubPop are appropriately ridiculous.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Both bands have a twee sound, but the key is in the lyrics -- both bands write much darker words than you would think given the music.

When the Vaselines sing "galloping through the morning dew..." they follow it up with "there's only one thing that I want to do to you" !
And the song's about a girl riding him raw!

Same with B&S -- "I was so touched" is followed with "I was moved to kick the crutches from my crippled friend." or "I gave myself to God / there was a pregnant pause before he said "okay.""

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post with Raggett. Congrats on coining "pervtwee," which is genius, if that's your work!)

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You're welcome! I thought of it just now so there ya go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer "twee-vert".

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Twert?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I like both. I guess I am more twee and indie than I thought.

-- El Diablo Robotico (nicolew1...), February 4th, 2004

Well, duh.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You're flattering N. there (to deceive, I s'pose).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Flattening N. would be the decent thing to do, but I don't have an anvil handy.

yeah, jack cole we all know where this is headed:

THE SHAGGS > JAD FAIR > SYD BARRETT ........ B&S

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

il-lame

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This has turned into a letter to Q.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

screw it. though my kneejerk reaction was the Vaselines (they rock and B&S doesn't), I peter out on Way Of The Vaselines around the halfway mark while there are three Belle & Sebastian albums that I can listen to all the way through (including their latest) - not to mention some fine EPs. I'm not a fan of the Arab Strap thru Storytelling period, and I'll take "Son Of A Gun" over any jaunty little Stuart Murdoch ditty, but in a battle of the bands Belle & Sebastian will outrun them overall.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

um, no, gygax!

also, jad fair>shaggs.

I'm going to assume you haven't heard Charmed Life.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

by billy idol?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

GASP. Evidently re: Jad Fair, you speak from ignorance! Half Jap's Charmed Life is quite the bombdiggity.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

though I'll admit that Fair's batting average is pret-ay shit-ay.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

on your worlds that might be true. thank god i live on neither.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ah fuck, erase that last comment -- its sounds snarkier and meaner than i intended. i blame it on work. sorry.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ah he's not as bad as that really, i just don't think he's that amazing either

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i quite like the little Shaggs i've heard

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i quite like that i've heard little shaggs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(snark snark!)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

jad is one of those things i just dont or shouldnt talk about ever on ILM since he's a friend. *smacks self in head*

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

tell him for me that Heaven Sent is truly stunning. I love it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

may + Ben + Anthony = OTMoneyissimo

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian are fucking great! Stuart Whatsisname writes some of the best lyrics in music today! Can YOU write a lyric as charming and funny as "The catcher hits for .318 and catches every day"? Or "We need to talk. / Step into my office, baby. / I want to give you the job. / A chance of overtime. / Say my place at nine."? No you bloody cannot.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The last lyric sorta reminds me of "Take a Letter Maria."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oddly enough, it was "Lord Anthony" that finally sold me on the overall goodness of B&S. I just wish they'd put it out when I was in high school.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What do these two outfits have in common? Well both are from Glasgow and both are an embarrassment to non-twee Glaswegians - factor The Pastels into this equation.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not twee and am embarrassed by neither. Mind you, I'm not Glaswegian either...

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Vaselines, i think it's the voice

And the fuzz on the guitars

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Belle and Sebastian for me. I am aware of the great and good influence of Mr Kelly and chums, but I just like Belle and Sebastian more. They may not influence anyone ever, or they may influence a great pile of steaming cack, but on their own merits as a band in their own right they are truly lovely. Most of the time.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Vaselines by a long shot. One SOLID compliation smashes many sketchy albums and singles.

I made a Best-Of B&S and really it's better than about any comp ever, I think

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It is thoroughly impossible for it to be better than a Pet Shop Boys best-of.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

And thus we are agreed. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

Kinda like the most recent Vaselines album. They're gonna be in DC Wednesday and trying to decide whether to go...
