yee-aye!
there aren't many box sets I would want, but I may make an exception!

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

who's gonna buy me this?

the arhoolie thing is definitely cool. but i'm pining for the gospel thing cuz it actually comes in a pine box!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's good, for sure. but not incredible. definitely the kind of box set you find yourself humming something at work and decide you want to hear one particular track from it, and you have to dig through the whole thing til you find it, and listen to that track about 5 times, and then you get bored of the rest of the cd after 15 minutes and put it away for 10 months.

mig, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree. It's got it's moments (Bongo Joe!), but it's not something I listen to a lot.

pauls00, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like i should see if the public library carries it.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 6 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Gosh, I want Goodbye Babylon so badly.

Arhoolie! This is the only Arhoolie-specific thread.
We/I acquired a lot of dead stock from they and related/distributed labels. My favorite stuff right now is th Folklyric label stuff. Ukrainian-American Fiddle, Early Irish-American Dance Tunes, Early Cajun, Kalama's Quartet, several volumes of Texas-Mexican Border Music. All generally from the 20s-40s.

ian, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

Of course can and should still mention the LP reissue of Bong Joe! Great record and highly recommended for fans of anything.

ian, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

how come i can't type anymore ;_;

ian, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

Man I NEED the other volumes of Cajun stuff on Folklyric. Some of the stuff on volume four is blowing my mind. Mostly in the vocal delivery, and i find the accordion much more palatable in this setting (than in much of the "Norteno Accordion" stuff, where it's just too... fast.)

ian, Sunday, 16 November 2008 07:09 (seventeen years ago)

Texas-Mexican Border Music

i saw one of those on the wall the other day - what's it like? i think it was an anthology of one group, with a red cover, i don't know.

there was some great stuff on here that feels kind of relevant to the above.

schlump, Sunday, 16 November 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

They're cool. I haven't actually heard the red one; tt's the first volume in the Corridos sub-series, which is a type of ballad singing, generally with one or more guitars. I have the other volume (brown cover) and enjoy it when I'm in the mood.

here's an excerpt from a review:
http://www.themanitoban.com/2014/02/good-bad-critic-6/18936/?utm_expid=11272860-0.HmgdGKDrSNSW2_uqax13Cg.0&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.themanitoban.com%2Fcontributor%2Fmichael-carlisle%2F

The subject of this documentary, Strachwitz, is a charismatic man who tells entertaining stories about his life in music. He has unbridled energy: no word that comes out of his mouth is dull, and every sentence has great importance. His knowledge of music is impressive, his love for it contagious.

Like most passionate people, Strachwitz has a grumpy and anger-prone side to him: there are certain musical acts which he absolutely detests, but overall he is a great man with a big heart. I left the picture with a greater appreciation for all of the people involved in making Arhoolie Records a profitable company.

Though the film is limited due to lack of archival material, there are many still images that capture the various eras examined throughout the film. The background music also gives us a sense of what Strachwitz heard on a daily basis. The directors expose us to a massive library of work, which spans multiple eras and genres, ultimately giving the viewer a greater sense of culture and the various problems that have been present in America.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 17:32 (nine years ago)

this is good news in terms of keeping the stuff available, but i assume this also means that arhoolie the record label as we know it is kaput?

wizzz! (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 May 2016 00:32 (nine years ago)

hmmm i guess so, they even shut their website down. i guess they will no longer be distributing anything either: http://www.arhoolie.com/

so, i suppose that folkways will be keeping the stuff in print mostly via digital download (and CDR if they still do that), so hold on to your records and CDs. i probably have 80 arhoolie albums in my collection, maybe more. what an amazing label.

wizzz! (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 May 2016 00:35 (nine years ago)

On the Arhoolie website link Chris writes:

I plan to continue to produce records and assist the staff at Smithsonian Folkways where I can.

Also,

Once the transition is completed, all Arhoolie albums will be available on CD and digital formats, along with selected LPs, at folkways.si.edu.

The Down Home Music Store, my retail record store in El Cerrito, CA, will continue to do business as usual, and will remain a prime source for all currently available Arhoolie releases, both in person and by mail order. Visit our website at downhomemusic.com, our storefront at 10341 San Pablo Ave., El Cerrito, CA

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 11 May 2016 18:25 (nine years ago)

right, but i imagine those arhoolie releases will be like the rest of the folkways' catalogue, available via digital download and CDR rather than "proper" CDs. maybe i'm wrong.

Sad news that Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie's founder, has passed. Elijah Wald's memories, including a lengthy remembrance about how the box set itself came to be, is a great read.

Also, as mentioned in that piece, the UCLA-based Strachwitz Frontera Collection is worth a dive into:

I also liked the story about how he had Treme Brass from New Orleans in a studio recording and it was taking a bit of time and Chris wasn’t thoroughly pleased. He was then in a cab and heard a live Treme set on WWOZ and was wowed. He contacted the station and then put out as the release the live set.

While out there jazz gets more critical attention these days, there are still New Orleans brass bands , Texas and Louisiana zydeco bands, Mississippi blues musicians playing throughout the south almost like when Chris S was making the rounds down there.
