RFI: underground pop

anyone know of any pop (along the lines of britney or xtina or whatever) in which the artist(s) is/are more "self-made", in terms of artist direction, image, etc.?

Serious answer: not off the top of my head - partly because the music they make is pretty expensive (or is assumed to be expensive) and cheaper rip-offs of it tend to sound dire (cf. lots of turn-of-the-00s British teen-pop).

Would fit with Pink, Avril Lavigne and some others, but they are not very "underground" since their music does appeal to a lot of kids.

Of course, the real underground pop is found in the underground Powerpop scene, which is really huge, and very underground :-)
