Carling Apollo, Manchester - Where to stay?

Hiya!

Does anyone here know Manchester well? I'm going to see A Perfect Circle at the Apollo on Saturday and it's so far away from where I live I can't drive back that night.

I need a cheap hotel somewhere convenient to stay in that night. Anyyone got any ideas?

Also, are there any good rock/metal nights in Mac on a Staurday?

don't fuck with the door guy at the apollo, he is a hell's angel (and also a fucking cunt).

are there any cities as joyously unfriendly as manchester?

Go to Jilly's Rockworld on Oxford Road for your rock/metal night, and get some drinks in at the Salisbury beforehand (also on Oxford Road, and frequented by people in black leather. I'll think some more about the hotel and get back to you :)

The Ibis next to the UMIST campus is the safest bet. Usual 'travel tavern' style but cheap and secure at least. 20 minute walk to the Apollo which is in an area of severe urban deprivation where a hotel is a massively unlikely thing.

Thanks Kate!

I'll have a look for those Jilly's and The Salisbury. Sounds good.
Are they close to the Apollo?

Ta aloysius, but I just booked a double at Manchester Whitehouse Hotel for £35 .
AA says it's abt 3 miles away. Yay!

If the Whitehouse is on Liverpool Road then I'd think about getting a taxi. Its on the opposite side of the city centre opposite a paint factory - not a great area to be out at night. Hope you enjoy everything though.

I'd say that Jilly's is definitely within walking distance from the Apollo, and it's also just opposite the Salisbury...Hope you have a good time and steer clear of any Hell's Angels...
Aloysius, are you a student in Manchester? I work for the university.

Wish I hadn't missed this thread. I could have recommended the Grafton. What a hotel....

There's also Rock Kitchen which is next to the BBC building on Oxford Rd. Another one of them metal nights, quite studenty. Rock World is more pre-teen kids rubbing up against 30something goths in PVC. Anyway, don't bother with Perfect Circle, come to the Star & Garter instead and check out ULTRASPACK and MEGAMONG blitzing the stage with lo-fi puerile hippo-hop and duck samples.

While in Manchester I wholeheartedly recommend a trip to piccadily records and pelicanneck. Two of the best records shops about. As for places to go - Night & Day is a good pub with gigs on in the evening. But I wouldn't really go drinking in the centre at night, and never go to rock clubs. SO....

Emma - the Grafton is very close to the apollo I seem to remember. It is cheap, and has a bar that doesn't seem to shut. Which is a charm. But don't expect luxury. I don't know what the food is like as I never made it to breakfast any of the times I stayed there.

Whenever I go to Pelican Neck they always scoff at my lack of knowledge and I end up buying things that make me feel really bloody stupid, like 'Windowlicker' (because I SHOULD HAVE HAD IT ALREADY DAMMIT) and for some unknown reason, the Fat Truckers 7'. Although I suppose it is ace for the right kind of person. I can't help but love Vinyl Exchange myself, the Oldham Street one, cos the Bridge Street one is staffed by wankers (how can someone who works at a record shop not know who the Magnetic Fields are??)

The city centre at night is hell, but Smile at the Star and Garter is the greatest indie club ever.

I'm sure the huys at Pelicanneck don't scoff at you. They're just very much into their thing...
