Was it not the "Arh Yey-uh!" break that Timmy Mallett used, though?

oh he used both, the 'wooh yeh' running in the background with an 'Arh Yey-ah' thrown in every now and then. surely this contravened the Geneva Convention or something?

zappi (joni), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that they've reformed, I'm glad that Tears for Fears have stopped aping the Beatles and have gotten on with aping World Party aping the Beatles instead. It's so much more fresh.

most of these are random guesses.
on an exceptionally anorak-ish note, it seems there are EIGHT (count 'em, if yer sad enough..) songs going up the top 40 this week. is this a resounding REJECTION of the marketing technique that has dominated the last few years - a record being played to death before it comes out, then quietly dropped? or is it just quite a big coincidence?

what the hell is this Sam & Mark thing? sob

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, steve don't be swayed by me - I'm stumbling about in the dark with some of these songs, but I thought Pop Idol + Beatles = sales. (Although assuming that 'measure of a man' if the song as the clay aiken single, it can't do it in any favors.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

*is the*

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate this trend for just releasing records under your first name. when Emma Bunton's latest single was being touted i was baffled as to who this Emma could be. pop stars should be made to earn their right to be known by their first name only - i think Robbie Williams managed it fairly quickly but these Flop Idols are taking the piss now.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

also it makes me think of Sam & Dave, which in turn makes me think of Chas n' Dave...so all is well again

I must concur with this bemusement over first-name only monikered pop artists; it may have been good enough for Peter and Gordon, but still... ;) Robbie, yes I can take, and of course, Kylie... (perhaps importantly those 2 names aren't the most common) but who on earth *are* Sam & Mark?

CLOSEST THING TO KATIE: Emma Bunton (as she should be)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, the point of Peter & Gordon being called that was that, having been to public school in the 50s and early 60s, they'd presumably have been known by their surnames for much of their childhood ... Sam & Mark are basically just two wankers from Pop Idol, who hilariously cover a song which begins "what would you do if I sang out of tune?" what do they mean "if"?

robin carmody (robin carmody), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sam & Mark are happening for two reasons:

1) Cowell isn't willing to chance his arm on Mark as a solo artist;

2) they don't want Sam doing a Darius and defecting to Another Major Label.

I haven't heard the record enough to really venture an opinion, but when they were on TOTP they looked effing awful.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and BETTING ENDS.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

From the brief snippet Wes (who was on & on about it being 1 year on since he'd started doing the show... :-/) played of the Sam & Mark record, it sounded appalling; surely they're taking the piss...? Aren't the puppetmasters? With another Beatles cover, delivered without any sort of character or twist.

Robin: Peter and Gordon I suspect would have been a rare example of this 'first names only' tactic, in those times. Made it all the more illuminating then; especially considering the points about their history. Now, it seems like any old tuppenny-halfpenny chancer can abandon their surname and presume to be *the* Mark or *the* Sam etc. It carries all the wrong connotations as well; makes one think of Sam and Dave, which only highlights the paucity of this new act.

Strokes #17 - 10 for Flowers and Fish, 5 for Scott and Ed O, and 1 for me, Carmody, and Alex.

And at #15, it's Kay-teeee...

This, I think, makes Emma Bunton the closest. I might hang on to see if the Double-Sizz-ees have climbed. I doubt it, though.

God, how come this Osbornes dirge is *still so high*?
And least said about Wes' hailing of P. Andre as a 'God', the better.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 15 February 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not just Wes. it's the whole of radio 1 (daytime at least). It sounds like students have taken over Radio 1, and bigging up Peter Andre is ironic or something

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 15 February 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Speedway are #12, somehow.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ferry Corsten is #11, and surprisingly good with it - 5 for Scott, Zappi & Snap, 1 for Fish, Alex and Carmody.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Fatman's #9, and Fishman's quids in. He cops 10.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I've found the missing run - The Poppyfields were #28, Scissor Sisters #29, Sugababes #30.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Michelle's #8 - 10 for Jellybean and Tom M.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

As you may have realised by now, Damien Rice, Tears For Fears, Liars, The Mavericks and School Of Rock won't be making an appearance in this week's chart.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

*14 weeks*, for "Hey Ya!"; fantastic... makes "Changes" seem like a quick slider.
#5: WTF!? Stereophonics this high?

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Stereophonics #5 - just 1 point, and it goes to Ian.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan #2, S&M #1. No points for Ronan, Lots of points for Sam & Mark.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Points to come a bit later.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

OH, and Hobart got 10 off Michelle being #8, too.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That chart really fizzled out in its later stages.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, gonna wait till I can get the whole top 75 up before putting up the scores. If the Liars or the Mavericks did not enter inside the top 75 then I'm not going to give Scott any points for them, cos it could just be the case that they weren't released this week. I would prefer it if people didn't pick records as 'not going to chart in the top 75' - with the unreliability of the release schedules, it is difficult to tell whether records are going to come out or not.
