Grime/Eski..whatever it's called these days, destined to be as much of a failiure as UK Hip Hop?

In my more pessimistic moments I feel like grime is gonna end up as marginalised and isolated within the wider UK music scene as UK Hip Hop. Mainly due to not spreading any further than London and alienating a wider UK Audience.

Grime, sounds like a Sci-Fi writers moniker for the pop music of whatever time period they're writing about.

As I stated before, grime is the new Britpop. "Some people are doing something in London" does not equal "This is the sound of modern British youth today"

Dom, I don't think anyone has that claimed it does.

I've just eaten my entire face WHOLE!

Yeah, weren't there l33t h4x0rs into Grime in Snowcrash? Or was it the name of some cheap street drug in an early William Gibson novel.

Linked because, well, because. Apologies to Matt if the ILM people get snarky but I liked it a great deal, I'm in no position to judge the truth of it though.

really like this, good to link stuff even if its 'improbable'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 7 February 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Linking improbable things = great idea! (I mean, that is the point of Mr. Eddy's work, yes? And Dave Q's?)

Jesus Dom your britpop comparison is so fucking weak and such a pathetic attempt at mockery of grime that I'd love to see you actually try and justify it.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'LL COMPARE IT TO SOMETHING PEOPLE HATE, THAT'LL BE FUNNY"

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Dom is referring to the way grime is being covered in the UK press. as I don't follow it much, I don't know.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 7 February 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

How is he? How is that similar to brit-pop?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 February 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think what he's actually doing is appealing to base established wisdom that "britpop was rubbish", hanging a point on consensus, using one unproven "fact" to back up another

Even if you dislike britpop it's lame to tap into peoples conservative side like this, though when you're opposing grime etc I'm sure it doesn't distance you from your target market a great deal does it?

otm.

I went to a "grime" club night in Amsterdam last weekend and I see great potential for the music here in Holland. Therefore also in Germany, Sweden, France, California, whatever. The music can develop in so many directions, plus as a listener can come to in from different angles: hardcore funky music, post-Neptunes hip-hop, grimy club music...

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 7 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What I mean is, if you're not too familar with the style (as are most people who are not tuned to the pirates) you're able to get into the sound from different perspectives.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 7 February 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It made sense to me at the time anyway.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 7 February 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, go on and elaborate on the Dutch perspectiver pleeze. Sounds interestin'.
