Bands/Artists Who Consistently Alienate Their Fanbase

Think of some bands/artists who either intentionally or unintentionally piss off their fans...constantly. You know, they keep making shitty albums, collaborating with people their fanbase generally hates, or just do things that make their fans embarrassed or pissed off at them.

For a long while there Bowie was the king.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, Metallica's probably the most popular band that everyone hates.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

intentionally: Brian Jonestown Massacre

er, the other options involve artists who are listened to by people who wouldn't care if they collaborate with shite artists at all. Though I suppose the "classic rock" crowd was pissed about U2 getting all "weird" in the '90s.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Jackson?

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the Richey fanatics were a bit alienated by the pie-eating stadium-friendly reincarnation of the Manics.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Primal Scream did pretty well to put everyone off after Screamedelica.
Sinead O'Connor made herself difficult to love
But really, Tricky owns this thread!

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Teardrop Explodes fanclub replying to Cope fanmail from hysterical teens saying 'DEAR X, JULIAN IS DEAD. HE DIED YESTERDAY. BUT THAT'S OK, BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE HATED YOU ANYWAY.'

ferg (Ferg), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Lou Reed used to do this intentionally. Nowadays, I think it's mostly unintentional.

I imagine if I were a Ryan Adams fan, I'd be embarrassed by his antics.

Ryan Adams has fans!?!? EEEWW!!

Radiohead

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, those fans are pissed this days.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

'these' days even.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say MBV and Guns N Roses have pissed off their fanbases in that neither have released a proper album since November 1991. It's come to the point where many people don't even care if they ever release another record.
Three years is a long wait, five years is Stone Roses/LFO "enough with it, get off your asses and make a record, shitheads", ten years is comical/pathetic.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

But don't get me wrong, I would still give my big toes for a new MBV album.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Courtney Love

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Eric Carmen

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

And Blur, obviously.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sisters of Mercy

ANAL CUNT

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Britney Spears' hardcore young teen fanbase is a bit disinfranchised with her "naughty, sexed-up" image.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there any Ministry fans left?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, ouch! Somewhere, Alien Jourgensen is wincing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

But Guns N' Roses doesn't truly exist anymore - it's just Axl
Rose now, and whatever wankers can put up with him.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

frank zappa merits a mention here, i think.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, ouch! Somewhere, Alien Jourgensen is wincing.

Or pumping his fist in the air, at the thought.

Sinead O'Connor was queen at alienation. Hence her short and bittersweet turn at pop. (IS she still recording? Just curious.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Seb certainly have fans scratching heads, now.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you alienate Belle and Seb fans?

I see your alienation and raise you some ostracism!

Chief Boabab (Chief Boabab), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember when Let Loose went indie?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you alienate Belle and Seb fans?

Any happier/poppier and the fans might revolt. Can you picture Stuart Murdoch singing with a smile? Frightening.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Britney Spears' hardcore young teen fanbase is a bit disinfranchised with her "naughty, sexed-up" image.

Britney Spears' one time "hardcore young teen fanbase" are now in their mid to late teens.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway now she has a new hardcore fanbase. And they're not going to abandon her.

omg, Friday, 6 February 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think B&S fans were in actuality alienated by the new one. I certainly wasn't. It's just that all the reviews said that they should be.

sym (shmuel), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I guess her fanbase in 15 years will be roughly the size that Sabrina's and Debbie Gibson's fanbases are by now ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Zing!

sym (shmuel), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You know it's the Fall.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I thought that B&S fans were way more alienated by Fold Your Hands Child -- everyone thought it kinda sucked, and it seemed like Stuart was going to keep ceding control to other (inferior) members of the band. Most fans I know like the new one quite a bit.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah we/they would rather a good happy album than a meh one.

sym (shmuel), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You come to expect a certain sound from a band that you like. That's why when they change to something completely different -a la Sargeant Pepper, Smiley Smile, (Choose your album) by the Kinks, Stones & Who... you become challenged, at first listen anyhow, But these guys tend to stick around awhile...

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 6 February 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember when Let Loose went indie?

Haha I see your Let Loose and raise you Sean Maguire

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate the _Waitress_ backlash. Why is it such a carnal sin
for the band to evolve it's sound in a new direction?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

How about REM (unfair or not, who knows?) in various ways (intentional, unintentional) over their carrier. I guess it's hard not to piss people off once you become huge.

Brian Jonestown played two weeks ago and Anton told a fan he wasn't going to be his "fucking nigger" so maybe that wins?

danh, Friday, 6 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian Jonestown played two weeks ago...

I saw them at the Mercury Lounge......and they were k-rap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Alex, say no more bad things about Courtney.

Although, I kind of agree with you on that one.

Aja (aja), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Alex, say no more bad things about Courtney.

Never.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. I understand. It's just, my mom is starting to like her. As a person I think. I think she likes the song "Doll Parts." I don't like that one too much.

Aja (aja), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's the show. Someone requested a song and Anton got a bit more nervous and a lot more angry. Anyway yeah they weren't so hot. I liked the sound though, better than their new album. They played a showcase the night before and were apparently on their best behaviour so I guess they had to let it out sometime.

Did you catch Vietnam? They are so fucking good.
