Hello,

I'm new here, so I'd like to know what all of you guys listen to.

And nothing else.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's my self-indulgent thread called: 500 CDs I think I would like to own

I've since added and deleted some titles, as well as buying others.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Esther Phillips!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool. I noticed Pierre Henry's on your list, Rockist. I like him a good deal.

And, indeed, yay Esther Phillips. What a voice and what an intelligence to use it so wonderfully.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Nina Nastasia too!! She roolz.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I like Nina's "The Blackened Air," specifically. "Run to Ruin" was a huge disappointment, imo, even if it has its highlights.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(Incidentally, I thought maybe this was Mel under a pseudonym, but since you thank her I figure you aren't her, though that could be a poly. I wish she would post here more either way.)

x-post: It's true that Pierre Henry is on my list, though all that more avant-garde stuff is kind of low priority for me right now. If you scroll down that thread about mid-way, there's a more readable version of my list.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Any favorite Oum Kalsoum songs?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Rest assured I am not Mel. I am his possible gay husband.

In regards to Oum Kalsoum, I love the song "Sertyl Hob."

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Ned, I like things. It has been suggested I like Loveless a lot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You can't fool me, Salvador - you're not Mel, you're Jim O'Rourke!

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ack, I meant I am HER possible gay husband. Sorry. Haven't slept enough.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I am neither fat nor blue eyed. Sorry.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

wow what a great list of stuff. i also like messiaen, vashti bunyan, ives, talk talk, the smiths stravinsky. to my shame i still havent gone out and bought the judee sill albums.

pete s, Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete S, thanks, have you heard Linda Perhacs? You might dig her if you like Vashti.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Ragget, what's your favorite song on "Loveless"?

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and does anyone else here love Can? I forgot to mention them. :)

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

no i dont know much about her. there was a thread on her here recently, and i recognised she'd probably be of interest to me.
what to get? (i know i should google or check out amg...but as you mention it!)

pete s, Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Parallelograms" is her only official album. And it's beautiful folky stuff.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

What is: Joao Gilberto's "White Album"? I have heard some things I liked but know little about him (or Brazilian music generally).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Ragget, what's your favorite song on "Loveless"?

"Soon," though if you want to argue that originally came from a separate EP, then "When You Sleep" or "Sometimes," probably.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Modern classical - check

Aphex Twin - check

Scott Walker - check

post OK Computer Radiohead - check

Smiths - check

Talk Talk - check

MBV - check

Salvador, get yourself some Saint Etienne and some hip-hop and you'll fit in fine here.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the way people tend to call it because of the cover and because of its trascendence, Rockist. It's his self-titled record and imo his best. Complex stuff played relaxedly.

And Ned, I think my favorite is "Sometimes." It's simple but gorgeous...and the keyboards are amazing on that track. I loved the use of it in the film Lost in Translation, as disappointing as the rest of the soundtrack was for me.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Dods, haha...

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(I just ordered an Eddie Palmieri album called Eddie Palmieri which people sometimes refer to as his White Album, so that makes sense to me.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. I've also been listening to :zoviet*france: a lot lately. Esp. "Collusion" for "White Dusk" and "Something This Beautiful."

Coil's "Black Light District" is awesome. So is Meat Beat Manifesto's "99%."

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Vashti Bunyan

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the bunyan/perhacs/sill love is literally everywhere these days. it amazes me in a way. but i don't know what way. while we are talking hipster totems make sure and buy a copy of Meic Steven's Outlander album that rhinohandmade has reissued. it's tops! (even if i like the Ghost Town demos more)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

scott seward, just read about the Outlander record on allmusic.com and it seems interesting. Thanks for the tip.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

In the face of the majesty of Killing Joke, everything else is utter, indefensible CRAP!.......but I'm also especially fond of the following: Firewater, Cop Shoot Cop, the Stranglers, Buzzcocks, Talk Talk, XTC, Devo, Gang of Four, Kiss, the Misfits, Motorhead, Julian Cope, Iron Maiden, Echo & the Bunnymen, Gavin Friday, the Wonder Stuff, Iggy Pop, the Ramones, Nick Cave & the Bad Sees, Skeleton Key, Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Birthday Party, Public Image Ltd., the Wedding Present, the Clash, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, Bauhaus, the Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians, AC/DC, the Plasmatics, the Modern Lovers, the Circle Jerks, New Order, Joy Division, the Saints, the Gun Club, Pussy Galore, the Cult, the Sisters of Mercy, David Bowie, Queen, the Fixx, Venom, Massive Attack, Kate Bush, the Pop Group, Barkmarket, Surgery, Television,.....oh, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

YAWN!!!! Why don't you just slap on a Nike T-shirt and call it a day? I mean, that's what this is, isn't it? Haven't you turned these into "brands" of sorts, like you're somehow defined by your brand affinity? Ok, yep, I guess you're cool enough to be my friend because you're wearing Jordache jeans...

Playa Hata, Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Why didn't people bust a nut when the Perhacs thing was first reissued and readily available on CD like five years ago? It's the same music now as it was then. I don't understand these things.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Playa Hata, I am seeking affinity, not acceptance. I love to talk about music and have never assumed musical preferences define you as a person.

Of course, I shouldn't bother replying to assholes.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC, Kate Bush! I love some her stuff, save her latter and early works. What's your favorite?

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know Broheems, things happen in waves. it's cool. it's a good album, that's all that matters. but there does seem to be a burbling from below and it just seems to hit everywhere at once. i blame devendra banheart. he's all about karen daulton now though. after mojo wrote about judy henske there was a judy henske mania. or at least for Farewell Aldebaran(sic?)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm waiting for the Chi(pronounced Shy)Coltrane revival.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

salvador, do you like rafael toral?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think what's funny is the trend now is to be actively "anti-hipster" and "anti-elitist" and to assume that if chart pop isn't necessarily your thing, you're a pretentious attention/approval-seeker.

gygax! Interesting that you mention him. I like him. It's adventurous, from what I've heard, but, then again, I haven't heard enough.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

search: wave field or his newest one electric lullabyes.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard any of those. I've only heard his Staubgold release and found it to be a nice listen.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate Bush! I love some her stuff, save her latter and early works. What's your favorite?

If I had to pick one, it'd easily be Hounds of Love by a lightyear, though as "This Woman's Work" on The Sensual World may be a single greatest achievment (and Maxwell should be pistol-whipped for desecrating it).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hounds of Love" is indeed fantastic. And I agree about "This Woman's Work." Though I think "The Dreaming" contains my favorite songs by her.

Kate is working on a new album, by the way...I recently saw some pictures of her working on the studio.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hounds of Love is my favorite album (of all-time), and I am pretty sure her new one is finished and is being mixed as we speak.

Christopher Gibas (Gibby), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's a "trend" to be anti-elitist per se, especially when the need to be exclusionary is a knee-jerk reaction seeped in a sometimes hidden desire to be accepted in certain circles. It's kind of like fashion, really. Trendy and exlusionary in itself. Or perhaps it's almost right-wing, full of judgement, and resting its laurels on a moral high ground of acceptable behavior, and acceptable opinions.

I'm not saying you created this list like you were showing off your vintage CBGB shirt, or Nike shirt, for that matter. But I still believe some of these threads that brandish their "lists" are exclusionary and full of judgement, and less about creating a dialogue. I often wonder how genuine and impassioned it REALLY is, or if it's just fashionable.

Playa Hata, Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

But I still believe some of these threads that brandish their "lists" are exclusionary and full of judgement, and less about creating a dialogue. I often wonder how genuine and impassioned it REALLY is, or if it's just fashionable.

This is going to sound ridiculous coming from me, but maybe you need to stop taking this stuff so seriously. Maybe turn off your computer and go get some fresh air. And maybe a nice cup of tea.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha! Yes, I know. But really, come on now, doesn't it have a grain of truth?

Playa Hata, Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Why didn't people bust a nut when the Perhacs thing was first reissued and readily available on CD like five years ago? It's the same music now as it
was then. I don't understand these things.

Well, part of it is that this is a better source courtesy of Perhacs herself, plus a slew of unreleased songs also courtesy of her, so perhaps there's just more of a 'hey, even better' vibe (and to be frank, I don't recall the earlier reissue at all).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha! Yes, I know. But really, come on now, doesn't it have a grain of truth?

Well, to a degree, yes. I mean everyone loves to showcase their taste...maybe its just a thinly veiled cry for validation. But, y'know...whatever. It's fun, and I don't think it's designed to be taken so dead seriously, though lord knows I've gotten into trouble here on ILX before for seeming to be all hot'n'bothered about various things posted here.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't see anything wrong with making a list of things you like. especially if you are new to the board. it's a way of saying hello and letting people know what you dig.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point, Scott....Salvador is conceivably only trying to meet like-minded individuals or at least find out about more music that might interest him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a good way to start a conversation. playa hata, no offense, but you should change your name on here and actually try engaging in some conversation. you might even have fun.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, ok...I'll calm down. I guess I've been reading too many blogs today, and they were all so sickeningly self-aggrandizing. So I come here and read a post like this, one that is a thinly veiled attempt at validation (so sue me), and I want so badly to hear someone be real and admit it. Ok, so now I've made a thinly veiled attempt at validation, and I thank you, dear Alex, for validating me. I am human. Hear me roar.

Playa Hata, Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my name sucks, too. But don't judge me for it, dude. Maybe I'll change it to "Creed Lover." Just kidding. Don't mean to hurt Salvador's feelings, he wasn't the one I was going after. I was mostly frustrated with the whole concept of it all. Whataver. I'm over it.

Playa Hata, Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Nick and I like Sugababes, Talk Talk, Orbital and Embrace.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

At least give the guy a bloody chance before frightening him off with a haughty diatribe.

Venga, Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ironic that that should come after my post, which was honest.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

:) Sick Nouthall. I'm thinking you're Nick Southall? The guy who wrote an in-depth analysis of "Spirit of Eden"? Where did I read that?
Anyhow, I liked that. And "Spirit..." is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am indeed, and you probbaly read it on www.stylusmagazine.com.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like I'm unlikely to ever recover from my Rita Mitsouko obsession.

I'm sure I've done this before somewhere.... aah yes, here it is.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

the vashti bunyan record is great. is her resurgence possibly because of the piano magic appearance? any other murmurings about her possibly returning to recording?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Sertyl Hob

That's probably what I have as Serat El Hob. I prefer music from earlier in her career than this. I do like some of this song as a composition, but her singing doesn't shine as much here as it does elsewhere (to me anyway).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

So what do you think Playa Hata? I partially validated his selection, while positioning myself as more of an Oum Kalthoum expert.

Muo Muohtalk (rockistscientist), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That should be Muo Muohtlak, of course.

i did. and then the new one came out with bonus tracks and made me feel like an asshole.

hi. I'm Dan. I like the Homosexuals, Slapp Happy, Van Morrison, the Feelies, the Zombies, Renegade Soundwave and Corky's Debt to His Father by Mayo Thompson. That's all. And the Urinals and 100 Flowers.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 6 February 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Null Fame - that's kinda how I feel; to be clear, I like the album too - lots! I was genuinely interested in why it's getting so much more attention this time around. I mean maybe it was in Mojo or something, I don't know; I don't read British music magazines. Anyway, it is frustrating when these reissue cycles get shorter and shorter and get teased with bonus tracks and crap like that. These indie labels are as bad as the corporations! What kind of way is that to smash the state? I don't know, much as I love it I am not going to buy the damn Perhacs album again just to gain a few extra demo versions. I'm not made of money!

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the vashti bunyan record is great. is her resurgence possibly because of the piano magic appearance? any other murmurings about her possibly returning to recording?

i think the initial resurgence was due to the Spinney reish of the album. oh, and the piano magic appearance. according to her website (which i haven't checked in a while) she was working on new stuff.
