I say that on purpose to bug you!

Nardwuar, Friday, 6 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish that was the Human Serviate himself.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 6 February 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mostly because of the thought that Nardwuar is an Old Skool rapper in Vancouver, Vancouver British Columbia in Canada.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 6 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it was just me.
maybe if we say his name enough, like Beetlejuice, he'll be summoned!

Huckleberry Terry Cloth, Friday, 6 February 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This, itself, sounds like a Paul Barman verse.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 6 February 2004 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(which isn't good, but not bad, and I don't mean good bad, nor bad good!)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 6 February 2004 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 6 February 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 6 February 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

plus he never responded to my request to finish his top 10 lists

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 6 February 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

because hip-hop slang wasn't the linguistic fucking NORM 20 years ago and nobody outside the Bronx got the terminology, maybe?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 6 February 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos beat me to it ... or as I was going to say

crackers weren't hip to that shit yet obv.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 6 February 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

also, because it was FAR MORE ENTERTAINING when they did, you cartoonish southern-bounce fuck

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 6 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What's wrong with "cartoonish disco fucks, anyway? Cartoonish disco rap beats noncartoonish nondisco rap nine times out of ten, and always did. And why do you say "say your verse and stick with it" when you really mean "say MY verse and stick with it?" When my verse (which i DID stick to) was catchier than yours in the first place, you doofus. I bet you also wish I rapped SLOWER, don't you? Maybe you need more meat in your diet.

def oj, Friday, 6 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What are some non RunDMC examples of this phenomenon?

sym (shmuel), Friday, 6 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"old school" effectively ends with Run-D.M.C., so they wouldn't be examples

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

A fly girl is a girl who wants you to see
Her name her game and her ability
Two gold teeth and cold cash money
The guys are on her strap she tends to act funny
She's got Gazelle and a b-bag too
Fly girl, I wanna be with you
You're not the prettiest thing girl, but that's okay
Your painted-on jeans make you fresh anyway
You wear much gold like it ain't no thing
You've got a name chain and the name is Ray
Your father is a doctor, a lawyer or a king (girl)
Take me in your car, let's go for a swing
One day you're gonna be at the top of the world
And I'ma be on your back fly girl

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

fuckin honkies, man

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Check it, my weed smoke is my lye
A ki of coke is a pie
When I'm lifted, I'm high
With new clothes on, I'm fly
Cars is whips and sneakers is kicks
Money is chips, movies is flicks
Also, cribs is homes, jacks is pay phones
Cocaine is nose candy, cigarettes is bones
A radio is a box, a razor blade is a ox
Fat diamonds is rocks and jakes is cop
And if you got rubbed, you got stuck
You got shot, you got bucked
And if you got double-crossed, you got fucked
Your bankroll is your poke, a choke hold is a yoke
A kite is a note, a con is a okey doke
And if you got punched that mean you got snuffed
To clean is to buff, a bull scare is a strong bluff
I know you like the way I'm freakin' it
I talk with slang and I'ma never stop speakin' it

nine months pass...
Marked shift in use of slang to reflect artist-listener relationship!

Old-school = I am a cool-ass artist who will enlarge the culture of hip-hop by taking interesting new slang terms and explaining them to you. As you hear me explain those terms, you will think that I am very cool and in-the-know and you will be filled with awe and wish that you, like me, were a part of this awesome culture. Because I am a part of the awesomeness and you are not, which is why you should respect me.

New-school = Dear small core of mostly-black fans who are "like me": I am totally just a cooler of version of you, to the extent that we use the same slang and have no need for translation. I am not from some place cooler than you -- I am from exactly the same place as you. Dear mass market of more white middle-class fans who are not like me: it is my understanding that by listening to my music you are forming a voyeuristic relationship with people who use this slang. I will not explain this slang to you, because if I explain it, then you will realize that I am talking to you, not the people who use the slang, and the whole voyeurism angle will be ruined, like in some fake "captured" video where someone really obviously looks at the camera.

Alternately, old-school = makes money by selling a new style to the mainstream; whereas new-school = makes money by convincing the mainstream that it is totally not for the mainstream, what are you talking about, this is some real shit from me to the streets.

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 5 March 2006 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Alternately, old-school = "hey everyone check out this awesome new thing we have going on"; whereas new-school = "hey everyone I could give a fuck whether you check out this thing we have going on (or at least I'm going to say that because it turns out that's exactly what gets you interested in checking it out)."

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 5 March 2006 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Alternately, old-school = mugging at the camera; whereas new-school = not acknowledging the camera.

Hence hip-hop now requires an element of suspension of disbelief! Which it did not, really, a long time ago!

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 5 March 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)
