This is only tenuously related to this thread, but here goes:

I once listened to Deicide's "Serpents of the Light" while riding home on the highway from a vacation in Florida. Usually that wouldn't be bothersome or scary at all, but it was pitch black outside and pouring rain, with thunder and lightning crashing VERY loudly. Pretty creepy.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but Deicide are so cartoony that I just don't find them scary. To truly freak yourself out, you need to sink your earbuds into some of the more disquieting music by, say, Coil or Throbbing Gristle. That stuff'll turn your shit WHITE when played in the wrong setting.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Friday, 6 February 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yeah, but Deicide are so cartoony..."

That's what I said, they wouldn't usually be scary at all, but it was raining heavily while thunder and lightning were crashing VERY loudly. The car I was in felt like it was going out of control, it was a very surreal experience. But yeah, you're right about stuff like Coil, Throbbing Gristle, etc. Early Cabaret Voltaire works for me really well in an appropriate setting, so:

42. Cabaret Voltaire- "Walls of Jericho"

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 6 February 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Taxi - Harry Chapin
Riders on the Storm - Doors
Tribute - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Don't You Want Somebody To love - Jefferson Airplane.
...Don't ask me why, though.

It is, though, all about the appropriate setting, isn't it?
