Has this really not been done on ILM ? (couldn't find anything in the archives)

Classic. The music is crap but the show entertains me. As long as I can laugh my ass off at other people's horrible singing, that's all that matters.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 February 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the only part that's interesting.

Aja (aja), Friday, 6 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it's only bad if you look at it from a music p.o.v., from a tv p.o.v., it's, uh, actually still sorta shitty after the first few episodes when they stop focussing on the obviously terrible.

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Friday, 6 February 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

From a music POV, yes, it's bad and that goes without saying. But the good v. terrible foci don't actually go away. Nearer to the end, it's Fat Ugly Person Who Can Sing v. Gorgeous Person Who Can't Sing and that's equally entertaining, IMO

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hate Ben Mulroney.

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Friday, 6 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

OTM, Ben Mulroney is a television scourge. For the non-Canadians, he is the host of the pathetic Canadian Idol, which tries its hardest to rip off American Idol to the very last detail. Except that all the contestants suck major ass. A housefly has a longer lifespan than the careers of Canadian musicians who start their careers on a TV show.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw him for only 5 minutes on the World Idol special and concluded that he is not a man or even human. He is even worse than monkey-faced Ryan Seacrest.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I disagree with that, Mulroney is just a talking head, but Seacrest is supposed to be a star. Ryan Seacrest is supposed to be Canada's bright young pop sensation. And he's going BALD. How many balding young pop stars are there?
I certainly don't mean to offend anyone who is balding and/or is sensitive about their hair loss. I'm guy in my late 20's, I would never play dice with the gods of karma. But really, there's a high standard placed on the appearance of a modern pop star, and a balding guy in his mid-20's who looks like a former child star trying to hold onto a thread of fame by hooking up with famous producers and engaging in mediocre songcraft for a living isn't it.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a cousin who trid out for american idol but she never got on the show.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry, y're confusing Seacrest with Malcolm.

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ps, if you see a dude singing "I Like to Move It, Move It" on the next Cdn Idl...that'll be me.

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I disagree with that, Mulroney is just a talking head, but Seacrest is supposed to be a star. Ryan Seacrest is supposed to be Canada's bright young pop sensation. And he's going BALD. How many balding young pop stars are there?

I think you're thinking of Ryan (Sean C.) Malcolm, the winner of Canadian Idol. Seacrest is the host of American Idol.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, thank you, I meant Malcolm.

Search: Girls Aloud, Will Young v2.0, Cheeky Girls, the World Idol hobbit guy. Liberty X vs Richard X and about half their own singles. Lemar at a stretch. Did Rosie Ribbons or Sarah Whatmore put out a good single? Most of the TV is good too.

Destroy: The rest.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico got there first, but I'd say - search Alex Parks' first single and probably her forthcoming, non-rush released album as well, and search Phixx's hilarious gay porn-lite videos. The Polish girl on World Idol seemed like fun too. Lemar is fine enough but very boring after a while.

Destroy, destroy, thrice destroy Michelle McFuckingManus.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I forgot Phixx. Search "Hold On You"!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a lot of Search-worthy stuff, so I take it you guys are more inclined toward the "classic" side of things.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely, it's great TV even without the search-worthy end products (though this year's Pop Idol was an embarrassment to all concerned).

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Sarah Whatmore put out a good single?

Fuck yes, AUTOMATIC! Rosie Ribbons' binned album is supposed to have two or three really good songs on it.

I want the Chinese guy who sang She Bangs on American idol to go on tour.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Edward O beat me to it. 'Automatic' was great and Sarah can be pretty buff at times. She was hot doing this track on CD: UK and TOTP (loved the Justin-esque solo dance in the middle of the song).

Classic for launching the aforementioned classic acts, keeping Paula Abdul around (though I've never watched AI in full) nand letting Simon Cowell rip into 1000s of delusional kids every week. I kinda pity Michelle however.

Liberty X vs Richard X - this is why I wish he'd never let them share it between their albums. Not only does this catch on and let them take the credit but apparently 1000s of pre-teen girls didn't even notice his name on the single cover that they opened millions of times to play it! No wonder he released (and then shelved - WTF?) the Javine song under his own name.
