gareth, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kind of a folksier B & S with a Carter-esque penchant for puns. Much strum. Everybody I know who likes indie seems to wuv them but I have not found myself warming much.

Tom, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say classic, but I don't think they sound like they'd blow me away live (but nobody does, really). Acoustic as hell. It's very soothing, nonchalant and witty. Every now and then I'll catch a lyric and go, "hey, that was cool how he put those ideas together with that one ambiguous word" or "hey, that was funny". For some reason they remind me of the Smiths, but they're not really anything like them. Why don't you try downloading a few songs today?

Nude spock, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kind of like the Housemartins crossed with v.early Go-Betweens. I like 'em. I got a crossdresser to snog the bassist once!

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

difficult to download. at work. no sound. requires internet cafe, which will try and do. may go and see them on saturday though

gareth, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They're actually really, really good live. Those strummy- strummy singalong-y pop songs can occasionally seem limp and unaffecting on their records -- on which they're sometimes too carefully produced and arranged to have much energy -- but live, it's usually just three guys banging away with a ton of non-twee enthusiasm, and at a much more rocking tempo. So I'd recommend catching the show; you'll probably be so charmed by their nice-guy- ness that you'll pick up the record, and you'll probably take it home and wonder why they don't just release records that sound like their live show.

That is, assuming they're still touring as a three-piece, which I understand isn't always the case. But I'm pretty sure they are, and you'll be surprised how many people they can get to almost pogo with just bass, guitar, and a standup two-piece drum set.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup, they're way punchier live -- more sinister and less cuddly -- than one would think.

I posted something nice about them on the Death Cab thread yesterday. Predictably I quite like them, even if the punning is very hit or miss. When it's on there are some nice Go-Bees/TCSs turns of phrase. I much prefer the strummy, jaunty "Happy Secret" compilation and most of "A Good Kind of Nervous" to the more recent, more lush record with the dragon on it.

"Guess How Much I Love You" is terribly sweet, "T-Shirt Weather" is awfully cute. Is it weedy indie pop? Yes, it is, but at their peaks they're about as charming as weedy indie pop can get. (How's that for damning praise on ILM!)

scott p., Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go see the Lucksmiths play live. Probably the best band I've seen so far this year. I was amazed by the way the way the guy managed to stand there and smack the drums while still delivering the vocals spot on. Lots of energy.

In contrast, when I went home and listened to the new album ("Why doesn't that surprise me," I think), I was kind of disappointed. The songs were nice, but they lacked punch. Pick up the "Happy Secret" comp instead. Unless you have a serious aversion to folk pop and/or the (occassionally) clever pun you won't be disappointed.

Miranda, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely there must be a live bootleg, then! I just saw 2 live bootlegs of The Ladybug Transistor in Kim's Video the other day! Anyone?

Nude Spock, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a good kind of nervous still found them a bit lost at sea most of it is a miss but caravanna, guess... and little athletics are classic, they were still trying to shake off the dreaded early days when they were not at odds with ska. that rears its ugly head briefly on the marvelous most recent album in 'fear of rollercoasters'. marty donald should have been the talk of the subject about english wordsmithery except he's australian of course. they probably sound like the smiths because they have often turned around smiths lyrics for their own purposes. they have basically done no wrong since the happy secret compilation, with a wonderful mini-lp, two of their best songs on the greatest hits cassingle, the splendid tee-shirt weather single, the great 'why that doesn't surprise me'(it has punchy songs but i've always thought they did the slowies better) and the new tour single which is charming, obviously.

keith, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic mostly; though the new album is more patchy than earlier EPs. I prefer Sodastream in terms of Aussie bands "who sound a bit like B&S" anyway, pretty predictably. They're pretty representative of half the Candle Records bands: wisecrackery, songs about Melbourne etc. I still like the Golden Rough "somewhat like Joe Pernice" sound better tho'.

Unfortunately, most of their Australian fanbase seems identical to the obnoxious Britpop club-kids.

charles, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to hear more about this Golden Rough -- especially from someone who is championing Sodastream. The "Practical Footwear" EP is the sadly underecognized indie pop record of recent years.

scott p., Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Plugs:

Candle Records; (candle.com.au) has lots of info on the bands- including on Golden Rough- as well as gratuitous 'I love Tali' messages from 14 year old Norwegan schoolgirls in the guestbook. www.ozmusicproject.net and www.mono.net are (occasionally incoherent) Australian music resources, with links to most bands.

The new Sodastream album is nice, if samey to 'Looks Like A Russian' (the excellent debut album out last year). Karl Smith's Catholic guilt thing has become increasingly apparent.

charles, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway, looks like i might pop along to see them tonight, even though no one else seems interested in going. if you see me, come up say hola

gareth, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, did you end up going to the show?

scott p., Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
I love these guys to pieces, absolutely incredible live, and ace on record too. I'd mostly agree with the 'better live' view, but some songs work in a more accomplished way when backed up with extra instruments, I think. But I obviously don't have a bad word to say about them...

Going to lie down for a while, I think...

emil.y, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no, i didn't go in the end. and i have still never heard them either...

gareth, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Still not sure whether they're up your street, Gareth, but the Lucksmiths are playing again, on Saturday (27th) at the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town. I'll be there this time, after what will be an indiepop mercy dash across town following the Matinee Records afternoon show at the Notting Hill Arts Centre. I'm looking forward to both rather a lot.

Tim, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay, me too...

After seeing them five hundred times in a row I've still not had enough- going to the show with Hefner tonight and the B&G one tomorrow, and I'll see you popkids down the front...

emil.y, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am probably going to make it to this one. although this depends highly on the quality of the haircut i'm having tomorrow.

gareth, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, you mean if your haircut turns out really well you'll take it somewhere nicer than the B&G?

Tim, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicky D and Nitsuh, upthread, are both on the money.

the pinefox, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i missed them again. and not because the haircut turned out bad. the haircut was cancelled after the girl called in sick. it was sold out, i was informed by Mr Hopkins eating a big parcel of food outside. loads of australians, i should have guessed really. so i went to a rubbish party in clapham instead

gareth, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

REVIVE CUZ I FOUND THE LUCKSMITH'S ALBUM "WHY DOESN'T THAT SURPRISE ME" AT CHEAPO FOR $5!

It's pretty good! Totally sissy! Music for bedsit bedwetters! English majors! Come one come all! They like the Smiths and Belle and Sebastion!

I like this....I've been in the market for some good ol' melancholy jangle...this fits the bill....I reminds me of being sad in college...that comforting kind of sadness that makes you feel more important than you really are in college!

good stuff! luv the nice sublte strings and woodwinds...cover art suxx though, don't do that shit at yr friends house on photoshop folks!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha that cover was done by one of architecture in helsinki

jimmy glass (electricsound), Monday, 29 August 2005 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

ILM, this lyric made me think of you rofl:

I could never understand
Hating music to hold hands to
Sometimes something that you can
dance to
Is the last thing that you need

Damn, I'm really digging this for some reason....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

i adore this band!!! so glad to see this revived.

marc h. (marc h.), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

that reminds me, i need to go to cheapo.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

they're huge in the states too. or at least, sell out the joint every time they play philly.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

that's funny. the last time i saw them at the grosvenor in perth it was only half full.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

their last album seemed to get a bit of a lukewarm reception in aus. it didn't seem to have much of a promo push either

jimmy glass (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

but it's their best album by a far margin i'd say. in fact they seem to improve with each one. although they really don't change much, maybe they will be the aussie bats then.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

i disagree, i think it's their first one to tread water. it's certainly their best recorded but i prefer the songs on the last one.

jimmy glass (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's the first one where marty donald's songs don't clearly outclass the other two so i think the whole thing is an improvement as a result. also it has a nice mix of tempos, not just peppy and slow, but some lovely mid-tempo songs mixed in too.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

Heheh, it was amusing seeing Mr. Main Lucksmiths guy being Architecture in Helsinki's merch person in Glasgow, which he apparently did for the hell of it via getting up from London for the show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

mark (for it is he)'s bass playing is one of the luckies' biggest strengths.

jimmy glass (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

i love the staring at the sky ep... i should buy an album.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 05:19 (nineteen years ago)

'where were we' would be the starting point i'd recommend

jimmy glass (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

Mark is playing some solo shows in Sweden at the moment. Would be interesting to hear the results.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

'Mr. Main Lucksmiths'

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

jimmy glass (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

mark (for it is he)'s bass playing is one of the luckies' biggest strengths.

OTM...good basslines! Reminds me of Andy Rourke....lots of Smiths influenced bands forget (or ignore) what a fantastic rhythm section they had....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

(shh! don't tell him)

*grousegripe* JUST because I forgot his name for a sec and y'all complain.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

i shall pick up "where were we" then!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

it's a good one. they're a bit like stereolab, the singles comps are best.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ned, I think they were more worried about what principle songwriter (Mr Donald) and singer (Mr White) would think of you referring to Mr Monnone as 'Mr Main Lucksmiths Guy'. But I won't tell if you don't. Ssshhh!

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

*weeps quietly but accurately at this assertion*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

pal

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

I took care to apprise Mr. Monone of his new title, "Mr Main Lucksmiths Guy", this evening. Mostly he looked confused, but he did so in that winning way he has.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

Boy, is he a winner.

So how's the new compilation? I loved "T-Shirt Weather" and _Happy Secret_ but didn't really follow them after that. Going to see them tonight, though.

Mr. Odd, Thursday, 27 September 2007 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

I only have "Warmer Corners," but I really enjoy it. I'll probably pick up the compilation.

I'd like to see them at DC9 on Sunday, but I can't. Damn 21+ shows...

Nathan, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

Is there a cat named Andrew Kaffer in this band?

roxymuzak, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

no

electricsound, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

isn't he the kissing book guy?

electricsound, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

Warmer Corners rules. It contains my favourite Lucksmiths song, "Now I'm Even Further Away".

W4LTER, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

andrew kaffer is kissing book guy. they were very similar to lucksmiths until they went jazz but the first albumis fantastic. he was in the best friends group with some of the lucksmiths, i think he spends many months in australia often.

keythkeyth, Friday, 28 September 2007 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

I really thought he joined them at some point. Oh, well.

roxymuzak, Friday, 28 September 2007 06:02 (seventeen years ago)

New album, First Frost, out in November. New songs up on myspace are underwhelming on first listen, but good news nonetheless.

David Bachyrycz, Friday, 3 October 2008 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

wow has it really been three years since the last one? i guess the spring a leak compilation in the meantime made it seem like they haven't been gone all that long

I'm betting The Guild League doesn't generate enough interest for its own thread, but the new album Speak Up was almost worth waiting four years for.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 00:21 (sixteen years ago)

really dug the first, thought the second was, well, not great. tentatively interested in the newie. is it better than the last one?

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

mark m lives on my street, a couple of doors up

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

Why did they release the Guild League and Lucksmiths so close together? I still never got around to buying First Frost yet.

svend, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 00:30 (sixteen years ago)

thought the second was, well, not great

Really? I actually like it more.

The new one's not much like either of them, and more like straightforward Lucksmiths with horns.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

Why did they release the Guild League and Lucksmiths so close together?

I guess they came into some money, because for a while on TGL myspace site they were saying they had songs, but not enough cash to record them.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 00:53 (sixteen years ago)

they also don't share an exact fanbase, particularly in aus

So, I finally got to see them live (just before they chuck it), having somehow always contrived to be out of the country whenever they get here. Concur with the upthread views that they make sense when you see them live, and that Tali's ability to sing and drum at the same time without fucking up either is an under-rated strength.

Camera Shy is great, isn't it?

ailsa, Friday, 10 July 2009 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

Singing and playing the kind of drums he plays is not particularly hard, certainly no harder than strumming chords on a guitar while singing. Nonetheless, I saw these guys once and I think they're pretty good for the kind of thing I normally don't like at all.

Garri$on Kilo (Hurting 2), Friday, 10 July 2009 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

i wish that sugargliders tribute cd that drivein were supposed to do had been released ;_;

keythkeythkeyth, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

I always remember seeing Tugboat mentioned on the microindie site, but was this the same tribute or another one?

1. The Earthmen: Yr Jacker
2. The Cats Miaow: Seventeen
3. Snowblind: Unkind
4. Pencil Tin: Corn Circles
5. The Jordans: Fruitloopin
6. Nick Batterham: Confidence
7. Starstreamer: Skylight Salt
8. The Cats Miaow: Unkind
9. The Jordans: Skylight Salt
10. Stinky Fire Engine: Please Rain Fall
11. Tali Lucksmith: This Travelling Song
12. Annie N Dale: Yeah Prahran
13. Aga Beufi: What We Had Hoped

it was ok - about a third of the set felt like an interesting progression on his songwriting with the lucksmiths, and the songs were a lot rockier overall, but the rest felt a bit like the weaker lucksmiths songs with a weaker singer. it does have the feeling that it's been put together in a little bit of a rush though and there's some good potential..
