master p - ice cream man

one of the best intros i've ever heard (counting only real intros with talking and stuff and not ones that are just short tracks that happen to be at the start of the album). "and if you bout it, you gon last through this ice cream man album cause i got thirty-one flavors, niggas kickin gangsta shit, positive shit, flippin shit, tongue twistin, slow gangsta shit but it's all real, it's all reality, and if you real, you gon feel this shit and if you a busta, you gon be hip-hoppin' it out." intro beat with all the exploding and stuff makes it all cash money dystopian/amazing and scary beats. !so you have to pay attention to what he says: he's got thirty-one flavors! no mannie-style beats, all super shitty too-fast west coast knockoffs (list of the best ones: 1. time to check my crackhouse. 2. half on a bag of dank 3. never ending game. 4. break em off somethin 5. bout it bout it ii) that suit p way better than any other sort of beat could. master p sounds filthier than anyone ever on this. just the sound of his voice. compare him on bout it bout it ii on this to the diplomats remake, which is the version i heard first. ("How Master P endorsed a jewel of New Orleans being given to a New York cat for bastardization is beyond reason" !!). he's hard as fuck. (the best parts are always the start of the track where he's just talking and singing offkey and just whatever). and it's not like he can't rap! i'd take his verse over pimp c and bun b's on break em off somethin and he totally outshines silkk and mo b dick on everything. it's those straight, overwritten-sounding verses that allude to stories but never really tell them. nothing effortless at all, i imagine him at his kitchen table in an empty house, all serious, trying to figure out a line. "i'm from the projects where we all think alike, though / and killin ain't nothing but a hobby / don't make me do a fuckin 187 robbery / and like some brand new jordans you tied up."

"why they call you the ice cream man" "well, i guess cause i got thirty-one flavors" "ooohh, can i try some of em" "you think you can??" "ooohh, welll...." "what would you do if i stuck my spoon in your mouth??" "i'd suck on it til i got allll cleeeannn" "yeah, like that. what if some ice cream squirt in your mouth??" "oohh i love it. vanilla's my favorite flavour" "what you do with it??" "drink it down!" "til what??" "til i got the last drop" well, hold on here shit open your mouth suck it suck it suck it suck it fast." [fake dicksucking sounds]

i first heard the song ghetto d ('make crack like this') at summer camp in 97 when my friend adam played me the cd and i went out and got it myself the next week, it ws the most gangsta thing id ever heard-- 'mix one gram of soda every seven grams of coke, shake it up until it get harder, then sit the tube in some ready made cold water' - 'an if you movin weight treat yourself to an uzi!' i hadnt even heard life after death at the time so i didnt realize the numbered list at the end ws a ten crack commandments jack, it just all felt like the realest music ever made by anybody

burbans and lacs is my favorite thing on it. with my favorite master p verse ever, short and then two more good ones from silkk and an anonymous fast guy.

wood grain with the leather seats
windows so dark you need a flashlight to see me
smokin on that doja!
four niggas in the back screamin no limit soldiers
true to the giz-ame, stopped in the projects
sold a half an ounce of cocaine
hit interstate ten to texas
listenin to dj screw, just raced a lexus
called up pimp c, did a song last week with my nigga bun b
twistin on some green spinach
and niggas still trippin--
i aint dead, i'm still in it

ice cream man has a song for his mama, 'no more tears.' 'this goes out to my best friend, my partner, the only person i can trust in this world.' it's not bad.

cloverlandthug, Sunday, 8 February 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the production reminds me alot of the eightball & mjg - on top of the world cd, especially the ones where hes mixing up vocoders and church organs and shit, its so perfect
