also: why is it that I have no problem with misogynism in music but militant homophobia really bothers me? stupid,,,

Maybe because you hate women more than you hate homosexuals.

i think its easier to believe that the misogyny is for show, and that the homophobia is for real. there also isnt an equivalent counterbalance of 'strong sisters' or 'real women' either

The misogyny isn't for show, it's for entertainment

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 8 February 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

thats what i mean. i thought show and entertainment were the same thing?

wtf has Buju Banton got against Basil Brush anyway (apart from that he's a supposedly homosexual, puppet fox)?

If you were to reject misogyny in art you'd have to reject.......well a huge percentage of art created by men since the dawn of time really. This isn't justifiying it. Precious little decent art is motivated by homophobia, whereas relationships between men and women often inspires passion, love, misogyny, jealousy in the same piece (a John Donne poem, Dylan's 'Just Like A Woman'), and we value that as the truthful record of the feelings of a man in love/lust. Of course this whole area's been politicised, and that's all for the good because tedious prevailing attitudes (eg the rat pack/austin powers dick-swingery of the 50s/60s, blues cliches) get questioned and alternative voices get heard. Good art, written from whatever perspective, always wins out in the end. Having said that i can't speak of mysogyny in rap because my knowledge is pretty patchy, but from what i understand it probably matches what you find in lots of blues and classic rock, eg the Rolling Stones, prob. amongst the worst culprits ever.
