some examples of stuff i recently downloaded:

01-alan_braxe_and_fred_falke-rubicon_(radio_edit)-fsp
01-da_brat_-_in_love_wit_chu_(so_so_def_remix)-crn
01-sean_paul-head_fi_toe-gmg
03-joe-more_and_more-rns
07-hilary_duff-the_math-xxl
10-cd1-r._kelly-touched_a_dream-wcr
sugababes-too_lost_in_you_kujay_da_das_bass_shaker_mix-usf

so, what do those end-tags mean? i haven’t got a clue, but i’ve noticed
some patterns – like usf & fsp is for house mp3s, jah & vod for dancehall, rns & wcr for hip hop and R&B… i presume those are references to mp3 providers/dealers? Do they operate on newsgroups, is it an ftp thing, or something else altogether?

It's the group or person that's ripped the original. Usually, there'll be an .nfo file with the Mp3s that tells you something - though not much because as if they're going to lead everyone to them.

Not always three letters, either.

It works as quality control too - the file gets checked by other members of the group first if sound quality is good enough, so if you see a file from a well-known ripping group you can expect a decent rip.

I imagined much of it comes from newsgroups or something.
