your guilty pleasures compilations please? if you're known on ILM as a fan of say, tacky pop, then don't bother putting tacky pop songs though but feel free to include stuff you have already astounded people with by admitting you like, and include songs from genres which you spend a lot of time and effort on ILM slagging off in general

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 8 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir to thread

Sym (shmuel), Sunday, 8 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I like the music to The Phantom of the Opera. I've liked that since I was in Kindergarden. I might have been the only one to have liked it though because my teacher had the cd and would play it sometimes and one day she asked if we'd like to here that or something else. Everyone else picked the other one. I got really pissed off but didn't say anything.

That trife CD is grebt

Sym (shmuel), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Would it be shocking to find out I like the Talking Heads?

Probably not.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah sym i know :/ tho for the record im not actually guilty abt most of those

$$, Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Yeah! - Big Tymers (this song is adorable)
Big Ball - Drama
Bone 2 Pic (Wit U) - Angie Stone

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh "Run On" by Moby too!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That song about people made of stars by Moby.

Even surprised myself.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Dean Martin-Hey Brother Pour The Wine
Steve Perry-Oh Sherri
Slayer-Angel Of Death
The Flamingoes-I Only Have Eyes For You
Shanks & Bigfoot-Sweet Like Chocolate
Another Level-Guess I Was A Fool

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm one-dimensional.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose that none of those are a big surprise.

I used to be the world's biggest Manic Street Preachers fan, so I still like even some of the most awful songs off of The Holy Bible. I also really like "Modern Boys" by Suede.

(/Calum)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and there's a Gong song I like and I still like "Connect" by Senser, even though I hate all crusty music.

"Teenage Turtles" by *gulp* Back To The Planet still makes me smile.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Slayer-Angel Of Death

I like that one too.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

REM - "Drive"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

loud pipes - lil wayne

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico OTM!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis 'Turn It On Again'
Andrew Gould 'Lonely Boy'
INXS 'Suicide Blonde'
REM 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite'
Pearl Jam 'Oceans'
Stone Temple Pilots 'Plush'
kd lang 'Miss Chatelaine' (probably the only song on here that is genuinely good ;)
Guns n' Roses 'Yesterday'
Aerosmith 'Amazing'
Red Hot Chili Peppers 'Under The Bridge'
Rage Against The Machine 'Killing In The Name'
Faith No More 'Evidence'
Seal 'Prayer For The Dying'
Natalie Imbruglia 'Smoke'
Hole 'Malibu'

Ash 'Burn Baby Burn'
Blur 'Music Is My Radar'
Limp Bizkit 'Rollin'
Lenny Kravitz 'Black Velveteen'
Smashing Pumpkins 'Stand Inside Your Love'
Oasis 'Songbird'

(yeh yeh i know, this is shocking nobody...and some of these I haven't heard in years - I guess it's more just lone ideas and extracts in more than one case too)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You like "Walking After You"? And "Malibu"?

Wow!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Natalie Imbruglia 'Smoke'

Me too

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Hot Chili Peppers 'Under The Bridge'
Rage Against The Machine 'Killing In The Name'

I like those too.

Aja (aja), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i like them nowhere near as much as i did when i was your age but there ya go

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, by your age i guess meant nearer to your age than my age now

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis 'Turn It On Again'

Yes also ABACAB.

REM 'Everybody Hurts'

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

But you like "Walking After You" stevem?

I only like to listen to that to fall asleep. It's a nice song, but it's a bit slow for me to really like and listen to regualarly. I like the Foo Fighter songs like "Wennie Beenie", "Stacked Actors" and "Monkey Wrench."

Posibly "Weenie Beenie" the most.

Aja (aja), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Would it be weird if I said that I actually like some Mission of Burma songs?

Aja (aja), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey stevem keep on rollin baybay!

pete s, Monday, 9 February 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd prob. still have time for one or two of the tracks on 'Vs' by Pearl Jam

pete s, Monday, 9 February 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, thinking about it, "Do The Evolution" by Pearl Jam is a pretty great song. That.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

dammit I don't think I can possibly do this. I've probably vocally celebrated everything on both sides of the spectrum here.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

somebody let me know if there's some rock genre that I supposedly hate in its entirety so I can wow 'em.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i really want to retract 'Lonely Boy' now that i'm listening to it - replace with 'Never Let Her Slip Away'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Give Me the Reason" by Luther Vandross. Gets me all choked up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Supertramp - The Logical Song

I think after this nothing could astound me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

'what's she got, not a lot'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

This will astound no one as I'm a relative newcomer. I'm old enough to have heard the Beach Boys in all their surfin' glory, but much prefer their sounds after Brian hit the wall. ie.

Sunfower
Surf's Up
Holland
Carl & the Passions - "So Tough"

The records sold horribly, but I sure enjoy them.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, you're far from alone there, Jim -- while I tend to prefer the stretch from Smiley Smile to 20/20, I agree that it's the post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys that work best for me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i own two-thirds of stevem's list. guilt? nah

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Dada - Dim
Alarm - Rain In The Summertime
Godley & Creme - Cry
Porno For Pyros - Pets
Placebo - Pure Morning
Bullet Boys - Smooth Up In Ya
Texas - Inner Smile
Fleetwood Mac - Hold Me
Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up

Utterly demoralized,

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 9 February 2004 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess mentioning I love all of Paula Abdul's Spellbound wouldn't exactly shock, given how much trashy dance-pop I love. I'd probably surprise more by saying how much I don't like Kylie Minogue...

This really is hard.

Aerosmith, "What It Takes"
Placebo, "Pure Morning" (thanks for reminding me of that one)
Cake, "Race Car Ya-yas"
John Mayer, "No Such Thing" (oops... I didn't really just say that)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My obligatory Moby pick is "In My Heart."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh you can add Texas' "Inner Smile" to mine too.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(It's OK to like that one coz Gregg Alexander wrote it, obviously.. so file it away with your Ronan Keating elpees)

I loved Say What You Want so I'll stop throwing stones.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the Wu-Tang Clan version! "A-rum-pum-pum on my Shaolin drum"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Obv nobody would be astounded by that though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Watching boring hipsters froth about its crapness when it was obvious it was brilliant was greatly amusing as well.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it's pretty fucked up that i'm on my third volume already...

Aerosmith 'Janie's Got A Gun'

Therapy? 'Screamager'
The Cranberries 'Linger'
Kylie Minogue 'Put Yourself In MY Place'

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dandy Warhols - Everyday Should Be A Holiday
New Radicals - You Get What You Give

For real! These rewl! I sympathise with stevem, but don't have a strong enough profile myself to put down a list. ie what would be a surpirse...?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

just do songs that you figure most people on here would think were rubbish (and they would actually be right as is the case with most of the songs i picked...but i still like them or some aspect of them)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Leave right now - Will Young
Arms wide open - Creed
Shut up - Black Eyed Peas
Down down - Status Quo
insert Sheryl Crow single of choice here (except the recent one)
What can I do? - The Coors
Up and down - The Vengaboys
Beds are burning - Midnight Oil
Real love - Robbie Williams
Last resort - Papa Roach
Mama - Genesis
Automatic high - S Club Juniors

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Unterberger (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Travis 'Side' and Cranberries 'Linger'

'Limp Bizkit 'Nooky''

I've never heard this but it sounds like the worst thing man can conceive

pete s, Monday, 9 February 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

'Rumpshaker' is tremendous, as is 'Summertime' - i think i like that Eagles one as well, and Monica's cover of 'Angel Of Mine' is superior to the original imo

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Various 'Perfect Day' (yes the bollocks CHildren In Need ensemble version)

Now you're just trying to get a rise out of us.

Ummm...
Come Out and Play - Offspring
Girls like This - B15 Project
That Eiffel 65 song that was in the charts about the same time as the above
and the works of metallic hardcore band Ringworm (I hate metallic hardcore)

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'Girls Like This' is superb

i think i might like Feeder's 'Just A Day' - maybe because i always think it's the Foos when i hear it

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This is actually pretty hard, as there are ironic/fetich likings for just about everything on ILM, so a lot of people are bound NOT to be surprised. But here goes:

1) Santana: Smooth (only when drunk, though)
2) Bangles: Eternal Flame
3) Mousse T: Horny
3) Seal: Kiss From A Rose
4) Madonna: Die Another Day
5) That Audioslave track
6) Natalia Imbruglia: Torn
7) Shery Crow: Run Baby Run
8) Metallica: Turn The Page
9) Eminem: Lose Yourself
10) A+: Enjoy Yourself

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls like This - B15 Project

I'm not at all surprised you don't like this Mencap! It's awesome though, I think I'd be surprised if anyone disliked it really.

I don't know what anyone else would be surprised by, but I surprise myself by liking:

Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)
Wilco - How To Fight Loneliness
Echobelly - Great Things
Cradle Of Filth - Twisting Further Nails

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

not to mention "unwell" by MB20 and "love me when Im gone" by three damn doors down. this is why I quit rock-criticking-- no taste.

sonic lifer, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason I will stand by Mark Knopfler's "Golden Hearts" album.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite like Knopfler's score to "Local Hero".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun

"A Horse With No Name"--that's a great one. Also:

"Come Sail Away"-Styx
"I'm Not in Love"-10cc
"Green Eyed Lady"-Sugarloaf

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought everyone liked I'm Not in Love.

may pang (maypang), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Terry Jacks got tried as a war criminal.

soniclifer, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

He or She that does not appreciate the celestial splendor of "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc....be they a hardened Skrewdriver supporter or a thugged-out gangsta playa....truly has lost touch with all tenuous ties to humanity.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)
