Inspired by the recent MuchMusic thread, I'd like to take a minute to reflect on what was the greatest show to ever air on aforementioned music channel. In those dark years before drivers' licenses and really anything interesting to do, this show made being trapped in the suburbs, alone on a Friday night pretty ok. Also, who was the better host? Simon or KCC? Anyone have any memorable guest moments?

One of my favourite things about the show was the fantastic opening credits, with Wire's "Ahead" rollin' over top of them.

Christopher Ward hosted before KCC or Simon. I think I preferred the Simon era myself as he seemed the least comfortable in front of the camera, being more the producer type.

This show was instrumental in exposing my Newfoundland outport ass to great music circa 1987-90.

Chris Ward was a bit before my time, but I have vague memories...

...Bands I liked in high school whose videos I first saw on City Limits:

The Cure
Superchunk
Sonic Youth
Jesus and Mary Chain
Skinny Puppy
Lush
Bad Brains
Bauhaus

I wanna say Jane's Addiction but I'm not sure and Eric's Trip was probably MuchEast.

When did did city limits stop airing? I remember when it was on, the videos/music were too "out there" for me too appreciate, but I'd probably really like them now. shame. I remember seeing "basscadet" by autechre though. I was too busy watching power 30...

I think City Limits stopped shortly after The Wedge came on in 95 or so. They have to bring that show back, for the same two hour length. I remember being freaked out by Residents videos on that show when I was 15.

From the bits that I can remember (pre-Nevermind) Christopher Ward's hosting bordered more on the surreal which wasn't always a good thing. But yeah.. I have some fond memories of this show as well. J-Rock, you and I probably saw the same Superchunk video. I went out and bought No Pocky For Kitty the very next day because of it.

The Wedge was to City Limits what Realtime was to Nightlines.

shit! yeah I remember seeing a residents video too and being freaked out by the eyeballs. For some reason i remember city limits as being edgy and slightly dangerous and can't think of any current TV equivalent. Could be 'cause since then ive been completely desensitized to basically everything.

May, I'm pretty sure it was "Mower".

I remember watching during the Christopher Ward days - it was amazing. It was the first place I saw Gary Numan's "Cars" video, and it really had a big impace on the 9-year-old me. I actually had no idea it kept running for so long...

Hey man--wasn't it City Limits for 1 1/2 hours and then the often ridiculous yet amazingly wonderful Indie Street?

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

city limits is what made me buy loveless.
for that i am forever indebted.
