Does anyone like these guys? At all?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes but reason clearly does not come into it. When the first album came out there were a clutch of reviews comparing them to Loop and MBV - I think this coincided with the serial ear-rapist that was terrifying London at the time.

Actually they also provide a good answer to this thread: The Great Divide: What was the first band that made you feel old? (so to speak)

inasmuch as they're supposed to be a band for grownups or something, I think, and I don't know anyone over 20 that likes them.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

This is something I've been thinking about a bit (not BRMC who I don't think about at all) - does 'innovation' have any currency at all among young rock fans now? I'm not talking about actual innovation but do bands sell themselves and fans defend themselves on those grounds? When I were a lad all sorts of bands used to claim (or claims were made) that they were doing something 'new'. Now the selling point seems to be pure-essence-of-rebel-rock which is more honest, or at least dishonest in a different way...

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Good continuation of the Brian Jonestown axis: The Warlocks, Dandy Warhols and BRMC. However the second album begs the question - whatever happened to my rock'n'roll?

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

the darkness have it jimmy.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah whatever. *meh*

POST-ROXX FOR LIFE BITCH.

Don't you have a prison gang rape to observe, Julio?

Jimmy the Saints, Monday, 9 February 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

POST-ROXX? never knew you liked tortoise jimmy.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh hardy har har.

Geez.

You almost, ALMOST got me.

Jimmy the Saints, Monday, 9 February 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Even in the mid-90s, yer Charlatans and Kula Shakers would get Monkey Mafia in to remix, and boast of their use of loops (see 'One to Another', 'Govindah', both Autumn '96 circa 'Setting Sun' indie-dance apotheosis-ah).

But I saw a vid of BRMC 'last night' and -- pshaw! who could be taken in by this?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the grip? Not baggy enough for ya?

Jimmy the Saints, Monday, 9 February 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I expect I probably would.

Are Lost Prophets related to BRMC at all? I saw them on TOTP and they were BLUDDY GRATE - also the singer is hottttt in a Professor Nummy way (see also KELLY STEREOPHONIC good god whot has happened??). Do excuse my recent spat of bad taste. Gaaah.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I believe my friend T__ was in one of their music videos. I don't think they're anything like Lost Prophets actually, I just wanted to confess my secret shames.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a different T__ reputation fans.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It wasn't me!

T__ (Tim), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ROIGHT.

I saw you hold a fist up in the BrMc video. Yer angry because you never got to hold the freakytrigger.com sign up in the video. YOU BASTARDS I WILL NEVER LIKE YOU AGAIN. ha ha.

Jimmy the Saints, Monday, 9 February 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You NU-REVOLUTION ROCK LAMERS! I dunno.

jimmy the saints, Monday, 9 February 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

are lostprophets like goths or something? their poster is.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

When I were a lad all sorts of bands used to claim (or claims were made) that they were doing something 'new'.

Yeah, like even fuckin Oasis had this whole schtick about sticking the boot into weak indie nancyboys and Carter USM fans or whoever, which all turned out to be very lame but you can see why people went for it at the time (Oasis I'm talking about). Old was their new new, or something. Now no 'hot new band' bothers slagging off the predominant scene of the moment, which part of me thinks is a bit of a shame. If only cos all their interviews are so FUCKING dull and predictable.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

They appear to be on the ROCK!!! shelf because about five seconds of their single has a bit of the old Evanescence DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH on it before turning into a rather palatable bop-along. The lead singer would have goth hair if it was slightly less washed.

(Actually I have forgotten what it sounded like, curses. I wonder if I could find an mp3).

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

They're like the Duran Duran of new rawk, I think the idea is. I don't think it was them that got people wearing scarves indoors, but they've certainly, um, helped

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but what about Jack from the White Stripes having a fite with Jet (from Gladiators)?? That is exciting and int... zzzz... i mean surely?

That was the moment I put down the NME in confusion, and then FIVE GLOSSY WHITE STRIPES POSTERS fell out - I realised that the NME was in fact the enemy and had to slowly step away from the Virgin megastore magazine racks.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah's posts on this thread are thousands of times more entertaining than the BRMC, so their existence is justified because they provided a context for said posts. Hurrah!

For Tom's question -- what sense I have of 'innovation' from bands, at least as they're presented over here, usually has something to do with a weak claim they like Radiohead, followed by a song or two with electronic beats.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh I just googled for a picture - UGH I take it all back I must have been on crack. Neu-TOTP is very dark'n'all.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey everyone, watch out for a band called Stateless whose debut single 'Down Here' is released on March 22 on Sony! Like Radiohead? Then you'll probably scorn this UNBELIEVEABLY FLAGRANT AND CYNICAL ripoff of them and never want to hear them again!

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

starsailor are named after Tim buckley's weirdest album doncha know!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

read as:

UNBELIEVEABLY FRAGRANT

I blame 'Lost in Translation'

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that movie.

Jimmy the Sainted, Monday, 9 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't just being flip when I mentioned this Stateless band, I mean it's quite possible you'll never hear them anyway but they are an absolutely stark staring example of what we're talking about (especially re: Ned's comment)

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

brmc are unnecessarily polished.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, I thought the first album was OK albeit an inoffensive Jesus and Mary Chain rip-off. I've never felt any compulsion to purchase it. The second album seems like it includes all of the songs that didn't make the cut for the first one, though.

I haven't read any interviews with the band, so I don't know if they are claiming to do something innovative and new, but I would be surprised at any such claim as they clearly are not.

webcrack (music=crack), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think they are claiming it -- I sure HOPE not -- but doing something with what they've got, oh dear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)
