big punisher - classic or dud

For "capital punishment" i say classic. surprisingly consistent over 24 tracks (including a handful of skits) and there's a handful of major classics that i'd give repeat listens. i like the fatherhood ballad "punish me" best. misogynistic, but strangely moving. also great: the horns and chant-along chorus on "you came up" and the quick-fire delivery on "super lyrical". it's quite a varied collection - does this chap get love from ilm?

just like w pac and big i didnt get into him til after he passed- like everybody in the late 90s i bumped off the books & still not a player of course but i guess i ws still to young to see through the hype unrelated to his skills (first platinum latin, 500lb, etc)- after his death i finally got on capital punishment and i cdnt believe the raw lyricism on it w all the perfect late 90s grimy nyc beats, its really still one of the most flawless albums ive ever heard- the tightests songs are you aint a killer, glamor life, boomerang, tres leches, twinz ('ready for war joe how you wanna blow they spot, i know these dirty cops thatll get us in if we murder some wops'), and his lyrical masterpiece DREAM SHATTERER (tho i prefer the original version on endangered species w the barry white sample, still incredible regardless)

also check for pass the glock, all around the world, and the UNSTOPPABLE whatcha gon do from the terror squad album, pun fucking rips every song he touches

$$, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the two best unreleased joints on endangered species are mamma (w fat joes boy tony sunshine and a more held back pun trying to explain to his moms why he had to kill this dude, starts of restrained but hes choking back tears at the end) and BRAVE IN THE HEART w fat joe, ill strummy beat and pun & the don trade lines like twinz pt 2, breathtaking shit

it also has the livin la vida loca trackmasters rmx which is amazing except for the livin la vida loca bits, one of the trackmasters dudes produced some of c.p. too but i cant remember what

$$, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the last couple fat joe cds have been really tight too for such an awkward ass rapper in the mid 90s, hes one of the realest mcs left who still makes hits and i love him for that, j.o.s.e. ws straight classic

On one of the DITC tracks he's on, I forget which one, you can actually hear him struggle to breathe between lines... that's kinda fucked up, really.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

that xxl making of capital punishment and fat joe's appeal made me want to pick it up. he's sounded nice on the few things i've ever heard him on.

cloverlandthug, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

$$, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i wd do a rough guide to pun but really endangered species is as good as anything id come up w myself, if anyones interested in him off of this thread i really recommend it as an introduction- all the classic singles and guest verses plus unreleased shit and freestyles

$$1, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i got capital punishment this morning. a split between what i think a regular new york rapper should sound like and sped-up super lyricism, wet sucking when he runs out of breath. and the pretty, plain production that i have nothing to say about. it's nice.

cloverlandthug, Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

$$ is like my 90s rap hipster clone
