Thus, they should die. Agreed?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd have to kill Robert Plant for the same reason, in which case Jimmy Page would turn you into a newt for endangering his retirement portfolio. The Zeppelin reunion can't come off until the Bonham clone has grown to maturity in the lab.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I had heard about this and larfed (and I thought the Plant/Page cover was actually "Lullaby"). The best cover of this song I've heard over the moons is still A Perfect Circle's medley of this with "Diary of a Madman," switching music and lyrics in bootleg fashion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

P&P covered "Lullaby".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, x-post, Ned.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Lol Tolhurst is in the video apparently

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You're right -- I get those two songs confused. Good thing you pointed that out; you wouldn't want to go offing people based upon faulty intelligence....[insert recent political reference here].

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Weren't Porl and Gallup actually in the Page/Plant band, though? Seems fair.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Porl was, yes -- he left the Cure in 1993 or so on very good terms and Page and Plant, both of whom are Cure fanatics, asked him to join up. I liked how various reviewers of the time -- from an older generation, I should note -- were extremely sniffy about it and thinking that Page and Plant were 'pandering' to a new crowd. Morons.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I suddenly like 311. Help me.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Good god, man, deep breaths now. (I've happily not thought much about them for about 14 years now, aside from one or two songs on their very indie debut we got at KLA at UCLA in 1991 or so.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

B-but Lol's in the video!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

He's not realy in the video, is he? Lol "thrown out because I'm a hopeless drunk that had to put stickers on my keyboard to help me play" Tolhurst?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard this other day. Aside from the Reggae beat, it's nearly an exact copy of the original, down to the flashes of feedback in the guitar solo.

I head Death Cab cover this song live last year. They did a fairly good job with it.

boldbury, Monday, 9 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I was about to say, having Lol in the video is sorta pointless -- especially given that song, from the album when he was fired because he was too much of a drunk fuckup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Spot-on, Ned. It's like Having Martin Atkins appear in a video of a Killing Joke cover. Bad form.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Death Cab didn't cover it when i saw 'em on on Saturday.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, Ned: Are you forgetting who you're talking to here?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No, just trying to gauge your tone. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, Ned: Are you forgetting who you're talking to here?

Ah yes, silly me to expect any semblance of credible fact from the fork-tongued anti-Oracle Perry.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00018D60C.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

it's from this soundtrack.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yes Alex, that was what I meant, not "Um guys, I'm one of the biggest Cure obsessives on the forum and I know all of that already, which is what makes the entire concept THAT MUCH FUNNIER to me".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Check the tracklisting, doooooods.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(xpost I am seriously going to die from inappropriate entertainment.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

it's from this soundtrack.

Oh, so they CAN be beaten savagely with pointed sticks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wyclef track is probably the best of the bunch. I wish Jason Mraz had taken the opportunity to do a big mind-blowing dub breakdown with the bridge of "I Melt With You" but no.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, who the hell is Dryden Mitchell?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

There's so much evil in the world.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

HOORAY EVIL

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

But it's bad evil! I want good evil! Wait, I've got Dan, ergo I am happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And the 311 version is so identical to the original that the times of both songs are 3:25.

It's like Gus Van Sant's Psycho.......with a reggae beat.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate 311 for personal reasons.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Venus Williams's website declares 311 to be her favourite band. There are pictures of her looking very fangirl-ish backstage with them. It's really odd.

Tori Amos has also covered "Love Song", and she did it really well.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Venus Williams's website declares 311 to be her favourite band. There are pictures of her looking very fangirl-ish backstage with them. It's really odd.

That does not compute.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like Gus Van Sant's Psycho.......with a reggae beat.

OH JOY.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if I'm enjoying the mind-bending concept of 311 doing a reggae cover of "Love Song" or Alex's/Ned's outraged reactions more.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I seek to please. Or something.

(My coworker Tom just told me that he is so offended by the cover and its omnipresence on local radio that he has to bolt to said radio to turn it down every time he hears a DJ say 'Up next is 31 --')

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Tori Amos has also covered "Love Song", and she did it really well.

This does not compute either. (And mind you I'm not a general Tori-basher or anything.)

I join Alex and Ned on this thread. In fact, I find myself in agreement with their outraged reactions fairly frequently, though I've only recently decided I had the time to post.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

this is by far the biggest pile of shit i have ever heard. you can stream it from barnes and noble.

Chris V (Chris V), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

As if 311 didn't already deserve to be dead for pretty much everything they've already done. Following the Amazon link to the soundtrack, I especially like the review that begins "I heard this in a record store last night and I threw up in my mouth a little."

rainman (rainman), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

...

These guys evidently will not rest until they've raped every crevisce of our ear canals.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Miccio I kiss you

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, LOL indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloody hell!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

alright in a day or two I'm going to transcribe the 2 out of 10 review of 311's Transistor that ran in the local paper the day they played here. Sugar Ray was opening (back when their only good song was "Fly") and Mark McGrath actually dissed my review on stage. So I've been a hated on critic since HIGH SCHOOL muhfuhs. I actually stand by almost everything I wrote in it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

though I forget if that's one of the several reviews I wrote that bafflingly praised Soundgarden for their "authenticity."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What's "inauthentic" about Soundgarden?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, while we're on the subject of "authenticity," remember....you shamelessly espouse Good Charlotte....THE MOST INAUTHENTIC BAND EVER!, so sew shut thy piehole.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard this soundtrack while cramming for my job at a bookacino outlet the other day. it is like, pretty much every hateful thing about maxi priest, only more realized -- plus one of the bands, in a stroke of either ironic genius or ... well ... i don't even want to know what, COVERS UB40.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard this today. It sounds very very very mediocre (311 stylee).

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, you misunderstand me. Soundgarden was thoroughly authentic. What I'm laughing about is the fact that I once gave a shit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

So, lemme get this straight: Soundgarden, regardless of authenticity are not worth giving a shit about, yet Good Charlotte are?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Like you don't know his answer.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup. I'll take fake-ass catchy and inventive pop-punk over authentic Led Zep minus fun anyday.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha "minus fun"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

My brow furrows.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Someday, SOMEDAY we will finally furrow Alex's face into one continuous spirally eyebrow

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll look like the beginning level of "Tempest".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Vaguely like this....

http://fusionanomaly.net/tempestscreenshop.png

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Wondrous!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Surrealist self portrait (though the mouth is too small)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I HAVE FOUND MY CALLING IN LIFE

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I do not like 311's version!

When I first heard it I thought it was the original. Then I relized it wasn't and I asked the question, "What the Hell is this!?" I got upset and yelled at the radio. I yelled, "I hate that version!" I changed the station immediately. I get so pissed off when I hear that version. I don't know exactly why though?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard this yet. Does it sound like the Cure version with new vocals or did they like...oh god...puddit in an Omaha ragga stylee?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like a slower version of the original.

I don't think you'd want to hear it.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Does it sound like the Cure version with new vocals or did they like...oh god...puddit in an Omaha ragga stylee?

hahahaha, take a guess!!!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's sort of like a link to a pic on the net that someone wrote "EW, GROSS!" next to. The curiousity is soooo there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, when you hear it, tell us what you thought of it.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

oh don't you worry.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom doesn't like it either.

She said flatly, "What a lame version."

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

its not like the original is all that good. one of the weakest cure singles ever.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw. :-/

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

haw ;-)

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and 311: ive always said that they would be really good if they got rid of their horrible vocalists.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

if 311 die, can they take the fucking Cure with them please?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that would be sad and wrong.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

:)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad to see we're either both unable to sleep or got up way to early (the latter in my case).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

heh heh, I'm working on something. you'll see it as soon as it's finished.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, noted.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

its not like the original is all that good. one of the weakest cure singles ever.

Hmmmm. I can think of several Cure singles weaker than "Love Song" ("the 13th" notably tops the list), but "Love Song" does pander somewhat to the helplessly romantic contingent of the Cure's fanbase.

And points off for the mawkish stalagtite-serenading video.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, surely Tim Pope's direction makes it more clear what those stalagtites are supposed to be.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Giant, rocky cocks?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Spot on. Robert said in an interview that he was rather surprised that Tim came to him with the video idea after writing such a low key love song.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex you FULE! "The 13th" is fucking excellent! (If you'd said "Mint Car" or "Strange Attraction", I would have agreed with you.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan OTMFM - 13th is probably my favourite Cure single of the 90s. The Cure in early Summer BBQ mode. How much better does it get?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the video today while doing laundry. I totally forgot there was going to be a Lol cameo. It's easily the best thing 311 has done and it's completely fucking horrible. I laughed my head off the whole time.

The original is classic, y'all. As is "Mint Car" AND "The 13th."

I'm not actually going to put up that 311 Transistor review, mainly cuz its really bloated (though not bad for a high school senior, I guess). I did point out some particularly horrific lyrics (i.e., "smoke your booty weed...the your city bumpin'") and I'm proud that I compared the track "Prisoner" to Vanilla Ice playing at the Tiki Tiki Room. Oh, and I'm proud that I used the phrase "bevvy of crap."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Strange Attraction" is just a phone-in. "Mint Car" is simply forgettable, and "the 13th" is a detour to a dead-end.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Cripes! Just saw this video again, and it re-ignites my ire. For a start, the fact that poor Lol Tolhurst does indeed appear as the bartender is just TRAGIC! I can only wonder what Robert Smith's reaction is when he saw that! ("Oh what an utterly pathetic PRAT!").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Simply forgettable"? Would a tiger gnawing on our spleen be "simply forgettable", King Gigantic Understatement?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 February 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I am, of course, with Dan on that one.

Tolhurst still gets royalties for that song, I seem to recall, even though he had nothing to do with it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, for all these other instrumenst and all..

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i miss lols drumming. i say replace jason with meg white. the cure always sounded better with lol (boris was good though)

kephm, Friday, 13 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally forgot there was going to be a Lol cameo. It's easily the best thing 311 has done and it's completely fucking horrible. I laughed my head off the whole time.

LOL at Lol!

*dodges rotten tomatoes and cabbage*

rainman (rainman), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy Anderson gets no respect.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is a pity cause you can hear him clearly enough on Concert and he did a damn fine job.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, when it comes to the Cure, Dan & Ned are the anti-Statler & Waldorf.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

wasnt adam the really annoying one that trashed hotel rooms and everyone in the band hated?

kephm, Friday, 13 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, Andy. And yes, he wasn't exactly the most stable.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
whats funny is everyone here hates the 311 reggea lovesong

but the cure openly stated that they liked it better than their version and there are reports they played it in a 311 fasion in spain

FUCK YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!, Thursday, 12 August 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I'm sure Robert has a very good sense of humor. Unlike you, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...

I like the 311 version better than the original too

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 20:07 (twelve years ago)
