CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone dance?

I can;t remember much about the last time I DJed, it involved a lot of lager, I think the last two tunes I played were "Back For Good" and "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

last time i was absolutely trashed on Babycham and whisky so i can't really remember exactly what i played. what i do remember is:

The Avengers - Paint It Black
Prodigy - Charly Says

erm.. thats all i remember.

snd, Monday, 9 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure people danced big stylee. I cleared the floor with The Rapture tho, not a popular choice. Nobody liked Dexy's either, I was most perplexed. Biggest tune was probably the Flips, and Milkshake segued really well in to the FF remix (that list is not in order cos I can't bloody remember).

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

CharlieNo4, that sounds like a decent night.

Jim Janse, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, people dancing to 'Thank You For The Music', Charlie? That must have been BRILLIANT.

My last DJ set was in November but I'll remember most by tomorrow. It involved the added madness of having never heard half my own records before that night.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

out of curiosity, when people talk about djing various types of music, usually pop and various satellites,do you mix or just fade the tunes in and out of each other?

a novel approach to the "all that stuff djs play sounds the same" stereotype there curtis

robin (robin), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Gear!, the future = the eighties?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

When DJing, I fade in and out 'creatively' with a bit of mixing (but not beat-matching as a general rule).

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Robin even fading tends to be beyond my capabilities.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The future was then, Jim.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems dude, I don't know a single one of those songs! I couldn't even pin them down to a particular style...should I be educated?

I never mix, I'm like a one-deck mixer who happens to have two (or even four) decks. "Oops, that one's fading out, best put another one on...er, where is it?" *pause* "There we are."

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Your style sounds like mine. A friend of mine's DJ name is "Awkward Moment", which is probably more appropriate for me. I could go with DJ Uncomfortable Pause.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Here we go. This first one was cool, only shame was 3 notable omissions: Cornelius – Another View Point, Jaimeson – Tru and Sugababes - Overload. This left me with:

Polyphonic Spree – Soldier Girl (RJD2 Mix)
Lauryn Hill – Doo Wop
Mylo – Destroy Rock ‘N’ Roll
DJ Spinna – Ladbroke Groove
Basement Jaxx- Red Alert
Avalanches – Everyday
Annie – The Greatest Hit
Deniece Williams – Let’s Hear It For The Boy
Pizzaman – Trippin’ On Sunshine
The Rapture – House Of Jealous Lovers
Donna Summer – I Feel Love
The Jacksons – Heartbreak Hotel
Neil And Iraiza – This Is Not A Love Song

Then the last official time I played out, it was in 2 parts at a house party. This was the 'dancing set' (no one danced when one of the housemates was playing a pretty good house set - it wasn't til the end of mine, when I'd eventually won over some late arrival mates of his, so when he took over they continued to dance):

Daft Punk – Revolution 909
Overrocket – Sunset Bicycle
DJ Falcon - Honeymoon
Mylo – Drop The Pressure
Dan X and Justin Long - Uptown Stomp (No Assembly Required's Stomp Mix)
2Raumwohnung – Sexy Girl (Tobi Neumann’s Meeting The Girls Mix)
Goldfrapp - Strict Machine (Ewan Pearson Remix)
Le Tigre – Deceptacon (DFA Mix)
Annie – The Greatest Hit
Saint Etienne – Join Our Club (Chemically Friendly Zoom Mix)
Fischerspooner – Emerge (DFA Mix)
Basement Jaxx - Breakaway
Richard X – Rock Jacket
Scott Grooves – Mothership Reconnection (Daft Punk Mix)
Seelenluft – Manila (Zongamin Instrumental Mix)
Tim Deluxe – Less Talk More Action
Basement Jaxx – Right Here’s The Spot
Beatmasters Feat. Betty Boo – Hey DJ (I Can’t Dance To That Music You’re Playing)
Radio 4 - Dance To The Underground (DFA Mix)
Andrea Doria – Bucci Bag (Playgroup Mix)
Beats For Beginners – Kill All DJs (Robot Forest Remix)
Ladytron – Evil
Cagedbaby - Star
Freeform Five – Perspex Sex (Ewan Pearson Mix)
Noonday Underground – The Light Brigade (Cut Copy Mix)
Nona Hendryx – The Heat Pt. II
Len – Feelin’ Alright (Dust Brothers Mix)
Prince – Raspberry Beret
Lemon Jelly – Closer
Saffron Hill – My Love Is Always There
Kyra - Easy To Love
Chromeo – Destination: Overdrive (DFA Mix)
Chaka Khan – I Feel For You (Remix)
Sugababes – Soul Sound (Medway City Heights Mix)

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And then for part 2, after the other guy's done, everyone wants to sit down and get stoned etc and they're like "anyone got any chill music?" because the alternatives are silence, Kish Kash (feel the gratification) and a Ministry comp. And I thought "Fuck it, I don't know anyone right now and the buff girls have gone":

The Avalanches – Slow Walking
Rolled Oats – Rolled
Jolly Music – Reversi
J-Walk – Buggin’ Becky (Balihu Remix)
L.E.X.X. – Waiting For A Dub
The Avalanches – Undersea Community
Manhead – Show Me The Way
Prince – Pop Life
Sugababes – Soul Sound (Soulchild Remix)
Stevie Nicks – Stand Back
Lucky Pierre – The Heart Of All That Is (Minotaur Shock Mix)
Rolled Oats - Oats
The Avalanches – Etoh/Summer Crane
Was (Not Was) – Out Come The Freaks
Cornelius – The Micro Disneycal World Tour
Michael Jackson – I Can’t Help It
Sugababes – New Year
Richard X – You Used To
Way Out West – The Gift

fuck fucking fuckedy fuck i need to start DJing like anywhere

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don'tcha tell us about the last time you did? OTM, though, I really wanna DJ somewhere - just typing that list at work nearly caused me to have an emotion.

Oh yeah, I can just about mix and beat match but that depends on the amount of practice I have beforehand. The night of the mammoth set I hadn't done any playing in months and I was oddly nervous, plus I had to listen to half the tunes for a minute before trying to work them in (if they'd work at all).

Stevem, I take it you'd accept my theoretical request to play at my mooted night then?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Lets see - I can only really remember the first hour and a half, cos it went a bit weird after then and we went through too many records. But:

Nurse With Wound - Salt Marie Celeste
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Neu! - Hallogallo
Can - Oh Yeah

Was pretty much the first 1.5 hours. I loved it, and so did the person with me. It was a back room, and early.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlie that sounds like a plan...

Rob and I discussed the idea (nicked from someone else - People's Republic Of Disco) of there being a night where everyone who attends brings a track they want to hear - each track is assigned a number and the numbers are then drawn at random by the crowd to decided which tracks are played when

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a great idea! except perhaps not for a whole night, maybe just the final hour or something to get people to stay on (like that'd work). free entry if you bring something to play, a million quid otherwise, eh?

shame it's not an FT night, we could use a Tom-bola! *cough* Song-bola?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

A website where people send in requests for the night a week in advance or so might be a vaguely cool idea...

Barima (Barima), Monday, 23 February 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but then they might not turn up and it would probably get abused.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 23 February 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all so...difficult.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 23 February 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
lol I'd forgotten all the discussion about this.

er...revive! cos I want to post my set from last night - 7"s only, can you tell when I bought most of them? be jealous, those of you who stayed at FT...

julie andrews! is 'i feel pretty' really upbeat and dance-able?
what was the reaction to that like?
coming before 'crash' and all i'm imagining it must be.

piscesboy, Friday, 30 July 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Feel Pretty" is a waltz of sorts, and a fairly upbeat one at that. Being a waltz, yes you can dance to it, although perhaps not in the way you mean...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
i dee jayed fer the first time yesterday, at a semi-hipstery bar/cafe thing, without a real dancefloor, but some were moving. anyway, the thread title speaks for itself, this was my set, in a very vague order (oh, and i ended up playing for an hour longer than expected, so more fannyback and beck than planned but hey):

out hud - how long
fannypack - you gotta know
lil kim - lighters up
squarepusher - my red hot car. and then i left the booth, and it played the next track on the cd without me, which was
notorious big - party and bullshit

the mixing was mostly just fade-ins, or a lil sloppy. except for the 'i feel space', which has a synth tone identical to the one that appears at 4:07 in 'are you vegetarian'.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 3 March 2006 03:54 (twenty years ago)

only in the last 3 months have i really begun to feel confident dj'ing... or at least that i've learned how to structure a set and what songs definitely always for sure do not work and which ones do. though i get the sense that what i'd play here wouldn't work other places. if i can find inventive ways of mixing something, i'll usually try it, though for the most part i am still at the stage of just trying to get it over with, so i'll just pick the easiest beats to match up. the tables at the bar i do acid girls (my night) at are going to die soon too, and periodically slow down a little bit. when i make my own edits, i try and think of cool ways to begin and end songs that don't rely so much on being strictly mixed. i've been playing out for about 2 years and i love it more every day.

was it actually sold as "post-everything meltdown" -- like, post-what?

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

post-spectacularly heavy weekend of partying which left anna-marie and i completely exhausted and half-asleep in the dj booth

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

k, but that was on the flyer?

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

no, the flyer just says "lovelife, every monday at 93 ft east" or something. each lovelife has a different name though, normally made up on the day, and normally a bad pun on 'love' or 'life' (eg justify my lovelife (madonna special), lovedeath (halloween special) &c &c)

That looks like an awesome set Jacob.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

DJing for the first time on Friday night at an after party. Little bit worried. Only thing that makes it better is that they'll all be probably pilled out of their minds. Might drop a schaffel to electro set, that's guaranteed to keep them moving.

Post the list on Saturday.

Tommy Tannoy (Tommy Tannoy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

That looks like a fantastic set, Jacobs. If you're on SSK 156c message me at Affectian as I'd like to pick at your brains and files.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Jacobs i forwarded your first setlist to a friend and we proceeded to get googly-eyed about going to singapore

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 18 May 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

Affectian, I am on slsk but those were all vinyl that I played, though I do have a lot of that music on my computer. I just started my night in Austin,TX. I think jergins, your confusing the two Jacobs here, jacob.wright and me, jacobs, both of us have great taste in music, though.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

I think he probably means your set from what I've seen of HIS taste...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 19 May 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

you both played the glimmers edit of "lost". that is such a great remix.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 19 May 2006 04:04 (nineteen years ago)

The glimmers can do no wrong right now...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 19 May 2006 06:01 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard any of the glimmers own work, would anyone recommend anything.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Friday, 19 May 2006 06:31 (nineteen years ago)

Well their DJ Kicks mix is fabulous if that counts

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 19 May 2006 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, it's the best DJ Kicks yet, and all of those Eskimo mixes are great. I guess aside from cassette, they just release a one side 12" called frantic. Has anyone heard it?

Jacobs (LolVStein), Friday, 19 May 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

i was trying to think of which Eskimo mix I like the best, but i really can't. I think 2 is my favorite, but all of them are some of the best mix cds out. Even the serie noire series are excellant. Yeah the glimmers can do no wrong.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Friday, 19 May 2006 06:57 (nineteen years ago)

Have you got the "Lovesucker" remix on gigolo? Any good?

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 19 May 2006 07:00 (nineteen years ago)

I answer my own question its pretty good. Similar pulsing bassline feel to the "Lost" remix.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 19 May 2006 07:02 (nineteen years ago)

I got accused of having bad taste in music today. By a 12-year-old.

Dr. Rodney's Original Savannah Band (R. J. Greene), Friday, 19 May 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

(in the end i also squeezed in ellen's "way out", isolee's "schrapnell", knife's "take my breath away (mylo rmx)" and joakim's "wish you were gone (dub)"...)

jermaine (jnoble), Friday, 19 May 2006 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

wasn't sure if the alkan hot chip rmx would work out, but it really did... so very warm and fuzzy.

jermaine (jnoble), Friday, 19 May 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)
