three grammy questions....

...that have quite possibly been already handled to death on that super long thread that i don't have time to read but what the hell:

1) when only andre came out to accept outkast's best rap album award from the two aerosmithers and bb king, was it because steve tyler mistakingly read the winner off as just "the love below," neglecting to mention speakerboxxx at all?

2) am i only the only person that thought celine dion's performance blew christina aguillera's boring tedium out of the water, despite the former's humorous microphone problems and the latter's truly cool flapper hairdo? alternately, am i the only person who does not understand AT ALL why people think "beautiful" is a wonderful song? i mean, I LIKE mariah carey. but at least mariah had a hook or two.

3) since i went to bed as soon as yoko came on stage, i never got to see the p-funk thing. what all songs did the "funk medley" people keep mentioning actually consist of? is it true that they actually worked in part of "get low" (the window to the wall part), or was that just somebody's imagination? if they DID do it, who rapped that part?

4) who was that other girl presenter who came out with amy lee and jacob dylan? i had no idea. i'm guessing vanessa carlton or somebody like that, but i might be way way off.

4) why didn't martina mcbride do one of her GOOD songs? (rhetorical question, but i had to ask. she does have a bunch of them, you know.)

oops, that was FIVE questions, the last one of which should be 5), not 4). All this pazz and jop math has fried my calcualting abilities, i guess.

chuck, Monday, 9 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

and my tpying and speling abilities as well.

chuck, Monday, 9 February 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I always think of it as a Meat Loaf/Steinman ballad and as such it works. If Meat Loaf had sung it = a vast improvement.

J0hn D. heartily agreed with you regarding Celine on said monster thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

>i mean, I LIKE mariah carey. but at least mariah had a hook or two.<

Well, so does Xtina, obviously. Only problem is, they were in "Genie in a Bottle"!

chuck, Monday, 9 February 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It really is ironic that Stephen Tyler only mentioned the half of OutKast's album with, like, hardly any rap on it, eh?... being that the award was for Best Rap Album.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: #1, that's exactly what I was thinking--perhaps Big Boi got offended?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought maybe Big Boi was getting ready for his big number with the funksters, trapped somewhere backstage when they announced the winner. Andre hadn't yet changed into his First Nation 3000 attire, so I figure he was somewhere a bit closer.
I didn't really hear Martina or Celine, since I reflexively muted the TV.

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Re #3: The first song was something by Earth, Wind & Fire. The second was "The Way You Move" (Outkast). The third was "Give Up The Funk" (Parliament). They definitely did bring in the chorus from "Get Low". I think at that point, everyone from the preceding three numbers was on stage, and pretty much everyone was singing it.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only person who does not understand AT ALL why people think "beautiful" is a wonderful song

I think ALL the recent Xtina ballads are boring as hell. You aren't alone there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You forgot Robert Randolph's "More Love," between the Outkast and the P-Funk.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit, sorry. That was off the top of my head.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

S'OK.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

EW&F song was their signature hit, "Shining Star"

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and here i thought i was the only one with a chronic inability to differentiate between various Xtina blubberings (other than Genie In A Bottle).

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wondering about that #1 thing. I thought it was fucked up how Steven Tyler left off Speakerboxxx, which actually was a rap record, and then all that furious panning around looking for Outkast in the audience by the cameras/producers, and then Andre alone coming up with nothing more than a simple "thanks". I have a feeling he wasn't comfortable with the way that went down.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

For 4), the mystery girl was from "Joan of Arcadia," a show on I-forget-which network in which she talks to God and solves crimes or something. I unfortunately haven't seen it to tell you how good it is. No idea why she was there--maybe in the funk medley?

Josh Langhoff (josh langhoff), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

CBS ALWAYS pads the audience with losers from their loser shows. always. and they make sure to get lots of shots of them sitting in their seats looking dumb.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

does anybody know of anywhere online where i can catch a stream of the Hey Ya performance? it was my top reason for watching the grammys and the only thing i missed.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This is driving me nuts. What was that other awards show that was on TV around Christmas time in which Andre also performed "Hey Ya"? He was dressed in some kind of weird pink feathery get-up IIRC.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Joan of Arcadia is the best show on TV.

I think "Beautiful" is a great song but just sung by the wrong person. Her performance is so histrionic and bloated it makes me want to puke. In the right hands, "Beautiful" would really work.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I answered my own question (thanks Google). It was the VH1 "Big in '03" show. In fact, there is a clip of that performance online if you want to watch that. I don't know about the Grammys one. The performance on the VH1 show was equally energetic, and the costumes were at least as far out.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, does anyone know where I can find out who won best jazz album?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Contemporary Jazz Album
(For albums containing 51% or more playing time of INSTRUMENTAL tracks.)

34th N Lex
Randy Brecker
[ESC Records]

You can find the complete list here:

http://www.grammys.com/awards/grammy/46winners.aspx

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I love the idea of Grammy employees analyzing vocalist's albums to see how many seconds they're not singing.

Thanks. That seems like a bullshit choice though...nothing against Randy Brecker, but come on, I've hardly heard a word about that record and he was up against the Dave Holland Quintet. And if they wanted to give the nod to mixing with drum machines & rappers, there was Matthew Shipp vs. Antipop.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks bunches for the hey ya link, o. nate

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha saying that Xtina's new material is devoid of hooks is akin to saying that water is not wet!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the water could be frozen. Is it wet then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't argue with that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Amber Tamblyn has SUCH a porn-star name!
I enjoyed how Ellen Degeneres was uncomfortable w/the perceived distinction between rap and R&B ("they're the same thing")! Unless that was scripted, in which case that's truly disturbing.
I think Martina McBride got some kinda backlash vote of approval from CBS ('we're just relieved that she's NORMAL').

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

And that was Martina's big comeback single from last year, all this year's singles have done okay, but not like "Concrete Angels."

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Amber Tamblyn is actor Russ Tamblyn's daughter. He was in West Side Story and Twin Peaks (probably a great 6 degrees of separation point). She's also a published poet (possible vanity press).

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Russ Tamblyn also = Cabin Boy!!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)
