Cheryl Leonard, (ex-?)Caroliner Rainbow, has a few recordings of her compositions, as does John Goode, of Faxed Head(he is Fifth Head).

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There's lots of indie classical music. Eg anything on Hyperion, Collins Classics, Harmonia Mundi, Chandos, Testament, ECM New Series, Nimbus....But this is *probably* not what you mean.
Actuually while i've been trying to work out my message it's really struck me how there's far fewer than i thought, most which you might think are indies are owned either by Polygram, Universal (which now owns Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Phillips, and i believe Naxos), Sony, Warner etc.

Hey, back in the day - approx. late 80s/ early 90s, wasn't it? - Factory Records put out three or four albums of 'modern classical'.
I never heard any of them, tho. Just read the reviews in MMaker.

This sort of music has become the soundtrack to my sleep. Peter Broderick, Dakota Suite... Any other recommendations?

Jacob Sanders, Friday, 18 September 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

Max Richter is my favorite.

Jacob Sanders, Friday, 18 September 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

Balmorhea ? James Blackshaw ? Jóhann Jóhannsson for sure.

J4mi3 H4rl3y (Snowballing), Friday, 18 September 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

How is Jóhann Jóhannsson since he left touch for 4AD? His last record I heard was very glacial, almost all drones.

eight years pass...

There is a whole rather new mainly German scene of neo classical piano music. Concerts often take place in the old Funkhaus Berlin. A couple of artists linked to it:
Hauschka (from Düsseldorf), Nils Frahm, Max Richter (of course), Jan Jelinek, Òlafur Arnalds (from Iceland), Grandbrothers (from Bochum), Francesco Tristano (from Luxembourg).
Their music usually is quite harmonious and melodic. There definitely is a nod to minimal music (like e.g. Phil Glass) but the orchestration is simpler (often just one piano, occasionally treated) and usually the focus is not placed on the repetitiveness. The following track is quite hypnotic though.

Example: Grandbrothers - Bloodflow
