if you want a DVD/CDR burner, DO NOT GET THE SONY DRU-530A... It sometimes burns DVD-Rs correctly, and makes all your CD-Rs into coasters

..even when you REPLACE the first one with a new drive straight from the store, like I did today.

That is all.

weird. is it pro or consumer?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

consumer

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But do you use them as coasters?

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I have enough to make a good disco ball out of them at this point.

Than(fuc)k you Sony.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, this is going to sound like an insultingly stupid question, but are you using "audio" cdrs or data?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

plain ol' data cd-rs. not cd-rw's or those made for just those standalone burners.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(and it wasn't insultingly stupid to ask)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, how the hell do you release a product that even your own goddamned bundle software can't properly burn without errors? I looked at Nero's website, and noticed that this drive was one of the few by Sony that was NOT listed as being supported. hmmmmmmm.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone had luck with Plextor DVD burners?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I told you db. You should have rolled out with me to get some coffee or something. Get away from the drive...

I have had very good experiences with Plextor CD burners in the past. Sorry I can't help with DVD burner experiences.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

db, is this a dvd+r/dvd-r thing?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

nope.. i only used dvd-r's and cd-r's. No "+" or Multisession writing or anything like that.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I sent a huge scathing review to C|Net.. cnet.com. It's funny, the "official" review of the drive gets an 7.5 or 8 out of 10, but most of the user reviews are thumbs down.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah.
C|Net == Second only to ZDnet in technowhorishness. Send either one enough money, and you can buy a perfect 10 for a review.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Samsung SW240B, and it burns one coaster for every, oh, 40 CDRs. I have no idea why yet.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Superdrive and it is fucking awesome and it will kill your computer with its awesomeness

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

* error 666: awesomeness overload
* segmentation fault
* kernel panic!!
* system halted

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this a well-documented bug or are you the only one with the problem?

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, half of the reviews on that C|Net user review page pretty much describe my problem, more or less.

This teaches me a hard lesson about buying computer peripherals... do my research before buying. sigh.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently bought the NEC 2500, which does DVD+ and DVD- at 8x speed (or it would if you could find the discs in the shops) and CDs at 32x which is a bit of a step up from my five year old 4x CDR drive.

Not a single coaster out of 25 DVDs and 15 CDs so far. I'm very impressed.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no difference between "audio" CDr's and "data" CDr's. It's all 0's and 1's - binary, you know? The labeling of media as "audio" is just a way of marketing to the less-than-educated masses.

I doubt DB's problems are hardware related. It's probably your software, or your computer is having buffering problems. Do you have an older, slower system?

Lastly, I've had a Plextor CD burner for 3+ years, using Pyro for my software, never had one coaster in over a hundred burns.

I hope this helps.

Davlo (Davlo), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

db, plextor are industry standard for backups and test burns in recording studios.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My computer is actually quite fast... and I've switched out the drive with my two year old Creative CD-Rom Burner, which is slower but at least reliable.. (Yes, something by CREATIVE being reliable in comparison. Spyware whores be damned)

although, i'm not doubting that there's some strange weird software/driver issue, but damn, again even if the drive's own bundled software can't burn anything right.. there's definitely an issue. The fact that this happened twice in a row may either just be bad luck, or just Sony trying to get bad publicity really easily.

This the very first time I've had a problem with my overall PC config in the over-two years I've had it, incidentally.. (aside from a dying hard drive, which I switched out half a year ago).

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And i called Comp USA (where i purchased the Sony drive) and they "don't carry any Plextor products".. Hmmmmm, exclusivity deal with some big company maybe? I plan to return the drive this Thursday, get loads of Comp USA store credit for future accessories, and then pick up that Plextor drive elsewhere, like Fry's.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Could it be you got a bad batch of blanks? Someone I used to work with had similar tales in the CD realm and it turned out the CDs (GQ brand) were the problem.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope.. used three different types of media... Memorex, Sony, and some cheap clear ones. The cheap clear ones had the best success rate!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

well, according to the CDR FAQ, there is - there's a bit (the disc application flag) on the 'music/audio' discs that is recognized by consumer grade (standalone) burners that won't let you use 'data' cdrs. but other than that, they're the same.
