"Mad World" will be like 4 non blondes, you all think its a good record but you'll all hate it in three months, said I in December. Oh no no said youse, but now...

Anyhow. Who else has enjoyed a complete turnaround without actually having changed, really?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt i'll ever get bored of "Mad World" in fact. The album's pants tho. And I have NEVER EVER liked that fucking "What's Going On" song EVER.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that mean I'll start liking it Mark?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

.. as in you've always not liked it?

There was a bit of 'devil's advocate' about what I said originally, I thought the record was OK, but not the 'save us from pop idol' saviour of music it was made out to be, still preferred the TFF orig.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it was ever meant to be a "death to Pop Idol" single, really. Gary'd probably have made the last ten on Pop Idol, anyway. It was the perfect conclusion to the charts of 2003, wherein you regularly went "... what?".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I've hated it since I first heard it yes! Nasty indie kitsch. The TFF tune went up several points in my estimation afterward though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i never liked it either, not even in it's supposed rightful context in Donnie Darko. i guess i don't hate it as much as Tico tho, i was very harsh on it in Focus Group scoring all the same.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I probably don't hate it quite as much as the FG score reflects, that was based on residual Darkness fan bitterness!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah what aesthetes we all are, you loved Gary Jules before you saw a picture of him, before you saw how little he looked like the anti pop-idol warrior we all so desperately needed. Same thing with the four non blonds you thought they were genuinely pissed off, their press photos showed them to be whitty and knowing, you lost interest.

luke gretton, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it worked well in the film, God knows what i'd think now. But anything I liked about it is long dead. Reasons:

1) the video
2) the trance version
3) being told how 'important' it is.
4) being told how much of a headfuck 'Donnie Darko' is

So Darkness wuz robbed. Anyone with DVD editing technology should re-edit 'Donnie Darko' to include 'Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)' at the end. I think it would sit really well.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Gary Jules was THE DARK HORSE, not the anti-Pop Idol. That was The Darkness.

(the ballots have been sent out?)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought 4 nons were genuinely pissed off, that made them marketable/knowing/clever/split up.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold on reason 2 might just be the saving of it!

(no they havent but the live group results are in. I'll try and do them tonight.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the ballots? did I miss again?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

William otm! The Darkness are the nasty indie kitsch, Gary Jules was just a film tie-in thing. The only reason to hate it is that Alex Parks's version is a trillion times better and should have been Xmas No 1.

(also yes, the ballots have been sent out?!)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mad World" will be like 4 non blondes, you all think its a good record but you'll all hate it in three months, said I in December. Oh no no said youse, but now...

did people think it was a good record? i've always found it pretty ignorable and am continuing to be able to ignore it.

on the other hand, i thought the four non-blondes song was good. still do. not life-changing, but amusing enough.

nasty indie-kitsch? you say its indie?? i say potato.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty lame I thought, I mean talk about bludgeoning the nice subtlety of the original, he might as well have enlisted Fatman Scoop to scream "I FIND IT KINDA SAD YOU FUCKING CHICKENHEADS, KINDA SAD, KINDA SAD, DID I SAY I FOUND IT FUNNY OR WHIMSICAL, YES BUT THAT WAS TEN VERSUS AGO LADIES, FELLAS, I FIND IT KINDA SAD. SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD"

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant verses.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The trance versh is an abomination! Jesus. I guess I'll never be a real poppist.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes sorry I didn't do the live group this time. Can I do the cheaters ballot version... thing? I'll get drunk by myself and do it, it'll be brilliant (er or something).

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan has just imagined the best record in the world ever. Random break bit coming in form of 'Echeww-eh-heww' bit of Svefn-G-Englar.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It may well be Enrique, I've not heard it. Generally I like trance versions of things though, I am very easy to please.

The Darkness are good indie kitsch obviously.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Basically the ol' joanna is sped up a bit, and you still get Gary flowing over some pretty standard-issh trance gubbins. It's tewwible, but at the same time more 'appropriate' for pop radio.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Sammy should cover "Mad World".

Also, I am sceptical about the 4 Non Blondes hate - I quite like "What's Up?" at the time and still do, it's a perfectly pleasant song. I only ever hear it in the summer on the Continent though nowadays.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

agh my tenses got all muddled there

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's no 'Linger', though. That's some quality AOR there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the trance version of 'mad world' is very good. Tico might like it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dolores out-screeches Linda P any day of the week too, though I prefer "Zombie" as my token Cranberries guilty pleasure.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Adam and Amy dance version of "Zombie" is marvellous.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It is indeed. There was a dance version of "All I Wanna Do" kicking around at the same time, wasn't there? That was great.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Funnily enough 'What's Up' got the pop-trance treatment at it's time as well

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)
