swearing in reviews - c or d

i really don't like swearing in reviews. it feels very inappropriate. i have no real problem with swearing in real life, on ILX or in music - and i swear a bit myself. it just feels...unfair to start swearing about a piece of music, particularly in a negative review. i don't like reviews that really gleefully attack an artist without giving them much of a chance - and i suppose i see swearing going hand-in-hand with this.

do you swear in reviews? do you think it can be used effectively?

you do realize that you are setting yourself up for some really hilarious answers, don't you? i will say: it can work if it works.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

How is he setting up for hilarious answers?

I don't like it either, I think sometimes it can work, but the same general rule I have about swearing in real life applies, namely that swearing in exasperation is funny and swearing in damnation of something is less funny.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i meant that "do you swear in reviews?" was an invitation of sorts.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh I see, heh.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

see, i've been spending too much time on ilm. i start to see everything as the set-up for a potential gag.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

And after ten minutes and 5 posts, no one has used profanity yet.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

*clears throat*

there is nothing better than a well placed FUCK YEAH! i swear all the time in live reviews - usually because i am still wasted, drunk, at the keyboard, five in the morning, trying to finish so i can get at least a few hours sleep.

JIMMY THE SAINTED, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i do occasionally pepper my prose with profanity, but there is a simple reason for it:I am a punk rocker.

this explains many, many things

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

O ha ha.

Can we have the 'I can write better than you - whinge fest contest - now or later?'

Later?

Good because they already sentenced me to twenty years of boredom for trying to change the system from within and another dance hall article will slay me.

Jimmy the Sainted, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you ever think comedy isn't your strong point?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Since when does smarminess rule as comedy?

Oh f___ this. I'm not in the mood to go against the ILX Delusional Cabal. Some other time. O.k.?

Jimmy the Sainted, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

well it does explain a lot - i can tolerate listening to most of the the music i write about sober

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I apologise Dave.

I'm in a shitty mood.

Sorry.

Jimmy the Sainted, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

and by the way i wouldn't know what you write like as i've never seen your byline, not knowing your name or anything. was merely a comment upon musical taste and a joke. accepted all the same...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I feel guilty.

Sorry again - you are evoking my half Jewish/half Catholic guilt complex.

Jimmy the Sainted, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Funnily enough, one of the most famous sweary reviews, : "What is this shit?" just proved the reviewer did not know what this shit was...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Which review was that Mark? I know I know it but it's hidden behind the sofa of my memory at the mo'

Greatest use of swearing ever in a review ever: EVER

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Prindle = my hero.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

has profanity ever been used to more pointless and cringeworthy effect than in the Nico Muhly review posted today on Dusted? fratboy or philosophy postdoc: pick ONE, Beckerman, christ!

deliberately not linking, to spare you all the pain.

Heh, that Prindle review is classic. Never saw that one before. I only very rarely use swearing in my writing. It can be effective, but only when used extremely sparingly.
