QOTSA split???

Okay, blame NME, but on their site I just read:

"Rumours abound that Nick Oliveri has left the band"

The link _was_ http://www.nme.com/news/107485.htm but now it's just a blank page. Maybe they accidentally posted a story they meant to hold over until tomorrow's mag?

It may well be a load of bollocks anyway.

Does anyone know more???

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Josh can always fall back on Eagles of Deeeeeeath Metal

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

one of the few ROCK bands I still listen to. This would be a shame, QOTSA live would not be the same w/o Nick throwing rock-star moves atop the speaker stack. :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I love QOTSA. I wish I'd bought Songs For The Deaf with me today. double :( :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as Im concerned, its not the same band anymore. I always enjoyed the tracks with Nick 'singing' on them. Is Mondo Generator any good?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to cry now:-(

NOOOOOOOO!!!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This is quite sad. I was under the impression they were great friends.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, that Distillers chick *TOTALLY* broke 'em up. Can't you see?! She even LOOKS like Courtney, maaan.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i think we can at least say that the distillers chick and firing nick are two bad choices mr. homme's made lately.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Read that this morn, and that's a pity. World's twisted when you're Metal rockers who can't party.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

So, that means, through the Stoner Rock Band Split Corollary, that he now must join Fu Manchu.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

..THEN leave Fu Manchu to form his own band. All stoner bands must pass through the Fu Manchu moebius before realising themselves.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

'Tis a rite of paasage in their society.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah, maybe for Americans. I'll stick to my Elevator To Hell.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I love QOTSA, but it was never because of Nick, who I thought brought the often unappealing dunderheaded-ness to the band. Mondo Generator? Eh. Was OK. With Grohl and Homme they couldn't possibly not rule, so no worries. (tho Homme's recent guest vocal on that new UNKLE joint left me kinda cold)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I just how much Olilveri balances out Homme and vice versa, and will said alchemy be upset by Oliveri's absence?

Josh Homme remains one of the coolest motherfuckers alive, however.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah,

6543, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

is nick oliveri the bald guy?
i'm not a very big fan of this band

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, he is the bald fellow. Agreed about Josh Homme.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Considering that the lineup of QOTSA has been in flux from album to album, as long as Josh Homme doesn't lose his way, I think things will end up ok. He just needs to stay the fuk away from people wanting him to do songs for action movies and other lame showbiz crapola that seems to be the bring down some bands.

Kyuss got better after Oliveri left, right? At least I think "Welcome to Sky Valley" is the best one.

Lanegan not singing will be a drag.

earlnash, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This is sweet.

After hearing one song, I did my best to avoid them, but I couldn't do it totally. Hopefully I won't get bothered again by their bland music and the weird looking beardy guy.

I did like that one song with that Do do-do-do riff, but as soon as the singer opened his mouth it was ruined.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Agree with earlnash. Queens are Josh's band.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see how anyone can dislike this band. Give them another chance, Sasha!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck oliveri, i'm broken up about Lanegan quitting (and hope this doesn't have anything to do with Mark realighting on the party train)

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Josh is fed up of Nick's partying, and has decided he doesn't want him in the band anymore.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean what _was_ Nick thinking? All those naughty drugs!

mei (mei), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

C-C-C-C-C-C-COCAINE!!!

seriously, Lanegan was the best thing about QOTSA as it stands now, the only nugget of actual ROCK ACTION amongst a buncha guys wanking out the Sabbath riffs, the only sliver of black-hearted desperado truth amongst all the drug-boasting. without Lanegan, they're as sterile and academic as most stoner rock...

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

which is not to say the first QOTSA album isn't delicious, liquid, feminine and glorious. just that, from 'rated r' onwards, they just sound like a bad grunge band for people too cool to own soundgarden or alice in chains records (except for those glorious moments when lanegan is at the mic, or moments like 'first it giveth' off 'songs for the deaf', which pisses all over 'rated r')

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

they just sound like a bad grunge band for people too cool to own soundgarden or alice in chains records
[out of curiosity] - do you really think things like that when you listen to music (in general)?

willem (willem), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

it just seems to me that QOTSA have sold to a demographic that snorted down its nose at similar sounding bands during the grunge era - but that 'feelgoood hit for the summer' accented the hedonistic (ie cool) side of the equation in a way that Soundgarden always avoided (and Alice In Chains complicated in the fact that hedonism in their world was always an explicitly self-destructive dynamic, and not a photogenic one either). i'm still hugely disappointed by 'rated r', as the debut is just pure genius...

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm. i totally disagree re: selling to a demographic but i think i know what you mean.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as I'm concerned, that's preaching to the converte, stevie. Most of the QOTSA fans I personally know are kids, like myself, who came up with grunge and already owned all those albums by the artists you mention.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It always amazes me that people literally forget that QOTSA debut even exists, but what I get out of *all* their records, compared to AIC, is a celebration of life, and a complete lack of navel-gazing. Not shooting up bucketloads of heroin probably has a lot to do with this, to be fair. By the same token, Soundgarden's pop qualities are/were totally underrated.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

y'know, i think, as ever, my overriding bitterness at the hypocrisy of my erstwhile colleagues at the old-style NME has corrupted my love of this band, as Willem, Francis and DJ Mencap are all OTM here.

i still have to say, though, that the last time i saw QOTSA it was only the moments when Lanegan took the mic that i really felt shivers of electricity. when they backed Lanegan back in 2001 for a closing cover of screaming trees' 'gospel plow', the weediness of their rock made me rue the fact that the Trees could never quite keep it together.

there's a seven page feature on Lanegan in the first issue of Loose Lips, released next week, where he talks about QOTSA, the demise of the Trees and his ongoing solo career. i'd reccommend it, only i wrte it so that'd seem a little bigheaded...

So that's what writing professionally (for NME at least) about music (you love!) can do... hm.

Ooo! I'd like to read it! I totally missed CTCL (apart from some of the online stuff) because of it's limited availability (=0) 'round where I live. Is it possible to order Loose Lips online or via mail or something?

The one time I saw QOTSA live was on the R-tour and yes, Lanegan taking (as in singing into) the mic did send shivers down my ankles. But that's because that happens every time he does that. Standing there like a pillar of salt.

Last year I saw a compilation show of Jools Holland on which a Screaming Trees performance was shown, featuring a very young Homme. Great stuff. (why do I mention this? o nevermind)

i'm sure it will be. keep your eyes peeled to www.carelesstalkcostslives.com and deathto.tv for details. it'll be a limited print run, though, so don't dawdle...

even better is their performance on Later in 91/92. they do 'dollar bill'. it is celestial.

Founding Bassist Nick Oliveri Leaves Queens Of The Stone Age

Queens of the Stone Age have always had a revolving door of members, but at the heart of the band was always the partnership of singer/guitarist Josh Homme and bassist Nick Oliveri. Not anymore.

At a time when the band's lineup seemed more stable than it had been in years, Oliveri has unexpectedly left the band, breaking off a musical relationship with Homme that goes back to their days playing together in Kyuss in the early '90s.

"A number of incidents occurring over the last 18 months have led to the decision that the two can no longer maintain a working partnership in the band," read a terse statement from the band's management. On Queens of the Stone Age's Web site, Screaming Trees member Van Conner is now listed as the group's bassist.

There has been speculation that something dramatic happened while the band was in Australia on the Big Day Out tour, but Ipecac Records co-owner Greg Werckman, whose label has released projects by both Homme and Oliveri, said he talked to Homme on Friday, following the completion of the tour, and had no idea there was any bitterness between any of the Queens bandmembers.

"This definitely took me by surprise," he said. "They're both extremely talented people, and they seemed pretty much like kindred spirits. They both just love the music and love rock."

Queens of the Stone Age plan to hit the studio this spring to work on a new album. When MTV News talked to Queens in June, the band said it had more than 25 songs written and hoped to have a new record ready by the spring (see "Queens 'Giveth' Third Single, But No New Songs This Summer").

At the time, they had just hired drummer Joey Castillo and said they were looking forward to a long period of stability and productivity. "We've finally found players that want to stay and we want them to," Oliveri said.

According to the band's Web site, Castillo is also no longer with the group. The new drummer is Barrett Martin, who was also in Screaming Trees.

Rock Bastard, Thursday, 12 February 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So it's basically the Trees but w/ Homme upfront. Get in!!

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 12 February 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

im falling asleep just thinking about it!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 12 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

nite chaki!

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 12 February 2004 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the trees but i preferred the dwarves. i don't believe the band will survive without oliveri

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 12 February 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

why not? he wasnt a very good, creative bass player.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

disagree

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

he's the heart and soul. homme is just the pretty face

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really sad about this. I must admit I'm a youngish fan that doesn't know much about Kyuss, the Dwarves or the Screaming Trees (I know, I know), but I loved the fact that it was Josh and Nick that held it all together - the two best buddies at the heart of the band. And when the five of them all became permanent, that was just fantastic - Castillo was a fucking incredible drummer, plus Lanegan and Troy van....something. Anyway, I was lucky enough to see them in that incarnation last summer and they blew me away. I just hope the new lot can keep it together. Josh Homme is, as someone said, a cool motherfucker and really always seemed to be in charge. Hmm.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

On Queens of the Stone Age's Web site, Screaming Trees member Van Conner is now listed as the group's bassist.

holy fucken shit... is Lanegan still in or not???

chris - get thee to a record shop/file sharing program and get yrself 'sweet oblivion' by screaming trees. you will never tire of this album.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Welcome To Sky Valley by Kyuss is my priority with the Queens ancestry. Thanks though, I'll have a look.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 12 February 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You want both, Chris. Trust me on this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't Homme actually a member of Sceaming Trees for a brief period? It's that all over again, it seems. And replacing Oliveri with that wooly mammoth is a dang shame.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

he was guitarist for the 'dust' tours...

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does no one else see that Kyuss best album is Blues for a Red Sun?

mei (mei), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I always found the Trees kinda dull, quite honestly. I prefer Lanegan's solo material. Josh's solo stuff on The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys soundtrack is crapalicious, to be kind. I dunno, but I am also of the opinion that they desperately need Nick in the band to keep Josh's impulses in check. Just my two cents.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And now Lanegan's gone too, according to NME

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

See, there's a reason the Screaming Trees broke up.

Maybe they should just reform as a supergroup called the Screaming Queens of Kyuss and do nothing but Jayne County songs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick should join Andrew WK's band.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

no way. AWK's bassplayer kicks Nick's ass!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There's already about 12 people onstage with Andrew WK, but none of them are bald with a menacing chin ornament. They can mix his amp down if necessary.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

uhhh... awk's bass player is bald with a goatee..

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

NICK'S ALREADY PLAYING WITH HIM!

Oh wait, I'm thinking of the one guy with the tattoos.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

uhhh... awk's bass player is bald with a goatee..

Really? Shows how much I pay attention, I guess.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This just in:

(On Wednesday, we mistakenly reported that Van Conner and Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees had joined Queens of the Stone Age. MTV News regrets the error.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

THE DREAM HAS DIED.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess he doesnt have a goatee
http://www.blackpixel.co.uk/andrewwk/images/garage/greggnpain.jpg

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

And he's wearing his bass just >this much< too high. Can't have that.

mei (mei), Friday, 13 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

REAL metal players play with their basses high.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 13 February 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit, this has to be one of the most depressing weeks of my life. Nothing seems to work.

Cacaman Flores, Friday, 13 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

They do indeed...

Josh Homme lays the smack down.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you guys think of the Eagles of Death Metal album?

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

eight years pass...

Nick is reportedly contributing to the new album and Dave Grohl is seemingly back on drums full-time.. really excited by all this.
