Please kill me. My four year old has The Powerpuff Girls version of 'Whenever, Wherever' by Shakira on perpetual repeat. It's a helium nightmare.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My cats basically listen to what I listen to, except for the deaf one.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Who bought it for her?

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe she downloaded it.

may pang (maypang), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

call the police, then. that'll stop it real quick

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you sure it's not a Kanye track?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My 13-year old listens to "whatever is popular" except if it happens to be someting her dad listens to. She doesn't know what to make of it when her old man listens to Outkast.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I have kids?

4654, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever he/she is soaking up through my wife's lovely exterior....at the moment, rather ominously, "If You Tolerate This than Your Children Will Be Next" by the Manic Street Bozacks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

A LOT. And I write about it a lot on the thread below, though you'll have to wade through plenty of non-kid-related stuff to get to it:

my entire pazz and jop comment spiel (including unused stuff)

Since I wrote that, my daughter has discovered the Pixies and Belle and Sebastian. (She also said this weekend that she thinks Radiohead are better than White Stripes, but she MIGHT have been joking..) Also, so far nobody can decide whether they like the Darkness or not. Though Sherman said some kids in his class call them "real punk rock"!

chuck, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Manic Street Bozacks

Ah, if only that was the name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That bit about the Darkness being punk is brilliant! I wanna see Alex's reaction to that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I shan't even dignify it with a proper response.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

from the mouths of babes...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a Shonen Knife track on the Powerpuff cd. It's probably the coolest. there's also a Bis version of the theme song. I think we can work with that.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If I ever have kids, I will make sure that they can rap before they can talk.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

my boy just discovered rhythm. hey dad! i can dance! he's pretty cool with anything i put on, but he REALLY likes the Jungle book 2 soundtrack.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

This is scary stuff. I worry about my future children growing up and listening to shlock. ILM parents need to start a "How to Ween Your Kids onto Choice Music" thread. Maybe add it to the FAQ page.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Well mine's four but is a big fan of 'Kraft-er-work'. She says 'we are the robots', alarming kindergarten teachers.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry do you hate fun?

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry, I hope the misspelling was intentional.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

just burned a CD w/outkast (edited), no doubt, pink, michelle branch, some weezer-ish geek band called maroon 5 and whitney houston (?!@#!) hardly a suitably role model for an 8 year old.

soniclifer, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Since I wrote that, my daughter has discovered the Pixies and Belle and Sebastian. (She also said this weekend that she thinks Radiohead are better than White Stripes, but she MIGHT have been joking..)

So painful when the kiddies show such high taste....Except for those damn child labor laws, she could have a future at the Voice.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My kids range from 2 to 7. They listen to Hillary Duff & the Ramones, as well as Disney soundtracks, Pink, and the Flaming Lips.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

briania, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Emma, newly 3, is obsessed with two songs right now that she must listen to one after the other. In the morning. home from pre-school, at night, etc.

the first is some mp3 that I downloaded (newly learned is by Little Big Men) called "Mr. Bush", or, as Emma says, "Mr. Bush Bush" with lyrics "Mr. Bush Bush Bush / You're not the president of this-a World" ...

the second is "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs.
Which is a pretty damn great song.

nick ring (nick ring), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no kids, but my 10 year-old niece is partial to a bit of Blue and S-Club action, as one might expect, and her eight year-old brother likes Robbie Williams, particularly "Jesus In A Campervan".

Who the fuck is Hilary Duff?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

My partner's daughter (nearly 18) listens to all the most appalling mass-produced, soulless, pre-pubescent populist crap you can possibly imagine (Aqua, Gareth Gates, Alex Parks, Steps, Westlife....); in fact it's so bad that I actually took her expressing a passing interest in Coldplay recently as a positive sign! (In retrospect, maybe I was being a bit optimistic when I suggested a that if she liked Coldplay then she was bound to like Can, Faust, Flaming Lips, Joy Division, Magazine, Neu!....).

She's never been to see a live band in her life (we've even invited her to come with us several times but she's always assumed a look of horror and refused); but she seems to live in perpetual fear of any of her mates (all of whose musical tastes appear to be far more "normal" than hers!) finding out about all the different stuff that her mum and I are into....

When she went off to college, I gave her a CD of my favourite album and told her that if she ever found herself missing me for any reason, she should listen to it as loudly as possible.

She assures me that it works a treat - apparently she only has to listen to the first couple of notes of "Frownland", and she instantly stops missing me completely!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I got home, Amber and Alice were 'interpreting' Sunday Morning the Velvet Underground through the medium of dance...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

My cats seem to enjoy any dollar bin 45, especially when you put bits of string on. Other than that, my kids rarely express an interest in things musical.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i sat my 9 and 7 year old nephew and niece in front of Fruityloops in order to shut em up while i had a smoke. when i came back they had made some of the most hardcore speedgabba i'd ever heard. and they were loving it.

i have high hopes for them.

snd, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot this crucial piece of information: The code in our house for something really good is, "That is SO the Remix of Ignition." I started it, but now when I say it both of my kids sing, "Hot and fresh out the kitchen!" They don't know any of the rest of the song, but I figure that's enough.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My two year old daughter used to sing along to the "uh oh" parts of "Crazy in Love" and then she started saying "uh oh uh oh uh oh" no matter what we put on, but now she's into saying "Rasco Rasco Rasco" for Dizzee Rascal. Such a young brain to be melding with the ILM hivemind, I fear she'll start calling me a corny indie fuxor soon.

BrianB (BrianB), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry, I hope the misspelling was intentional.
Yes, I meant wean. And I do enjoy having fun, but being concerned about raising children in the right kind of music-friendly environment does pass through my thoughts from time to time.
This thread should be an appendix to the next Dr. Spock reference guide (or whatever parents are reading these days).
If all this sounds demented, it's because I'm not a parent so obviously I don't have a fucking clue what I'm talking about.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 12 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

My four-year-old son has been obsessed with the first 1/2 Japanese album for a couple months now. Virtually every time we're in the car, we have to listen to "Funky Broadway Melody" and "I'm Sorry," but today he wanted to keep going, including through those two LONG hard-to-hear live tracks. We still haven't made it through the whole thing, but neither could Lester Bangs. He also really likes the photos and can sort of distinguish between Jad and David singing. Exactly how bad a father am I?

Aside from that, the Phil Spector Xmas album's getting a lot of play right now. Also They Might Be Giants Here Come the 123s, creepy CDs of kids singing nursery rhymes, and Diamanda Galas/John Paul Jones's "Skotoseme."

dr. phil, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

My 15 year-old is listening to Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, Muse, Silversun Pickups, Wale, and Kid Cudi.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

my kid is currently listening to Blood On The Tracks. She has no say in the matter though -- she's only 4 months old ... i'm curious to see how her tastes develop though!

tylerw, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

my son loves Yellow Submarine and anything with a beat but otherwise has stopped expressing opinions about the music I play. he is quite fond of singing "Bingo was his name-o" and the Spiderman song while he poops.

akm, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

my 7-yr old son has had successive crushes on Aztec Camera, Chuck Berry, Scatman John and most recently, the Human League. His older brother prefers Led Zep and teh Beatles

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 17 December 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

my 19 year-old daughter: Goatwhore, Pisschrist, Gojira, Ensiferum, Revocation, Shrinebuilder, Watain, Carcass, Venom, Ahab, Vader, etc. etc. etc.
my 17 year-old daughter: Lady Gaga, The Saturdays, Interpol, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Kesha

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 17 December 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

My 5-year-old son is obsessed with Bob Dylan, especially The Basement Tapes. He walks around the house humming "Lo and Behold."

Once, while listening intently, he asked me, "Dad, what's Bob Dylan talking about?" "Son," said I, "people have been asking that question for more than 40 years."

Chonus, Thursday, 17 December 2009 21:55 (sixteen years ago)

My 14-year-old likes mostly classical, is warming to jazz (esp. Monk) via his piano lessons, and lately is into The Christiansand String Swing Band, some nuttiness he found out about on a computer gaming site.

(They're actually really fun:)

5-yr-old recently randomly plucked vol. 2 of 69 Love Songs off the shelf and now keeps listening to it.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 21 December 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

That's the best volume as I recall.

dr. phil, Monday, 21 December 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

i remember when i would keep on screaming at my dad to play "Night Train" in the car when i was about five.

when james brown died, we both cried like little babies. and my pops does NOT cry.

And now my dick is where? Oh, this is too rich (the table is the table), Monday, 21 December 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

daughter age 5: "Where the Wild Things Are OST" and "Locket Love" off of "Rocket to Russia."

son, age 8, couldn't be bothered with music at all. Too immersed in the world of Legos and star Wars.

i recently hipped a new-dad friend to this stuff:

he was worried about the same thing...

ten years pass...

Following on the recent Japanese hip hop thread, could we please get an update from those of you with kids aged 9-19 or so? I am hopelessly out of touch and trap-EDM makes me feel like a dinosaur.
