The scripts from last year still work with only minor tweaking, so here again is my little yearly P&J stat exercise:

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yaayyyyyy George! Way to go, you obscurantist. and my old next door neighbor David Snyder on the low-end as well. And Deena Dasein!! the only person who would vote for Amon Amarth with me. She is my new hero.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

taking sides: conformist consensus peers vs individualistic eccentric listeners

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, thank ya Glenn. Why am I not surprised Hilburn is number three.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

glenn, these are a lot of fun for some reason. thanks! i'm a big fan of your site as well.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Top ILMer (that I can see) is Anthony Miccio.

2 years ago I was getting 50 points on this, now it's 20 - I thought my tastes had got lots more conformist but I think the ground's shifted from under me (also Dylan didn't put an album out!)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

this easily the highest I've ever been on one of these things. I actually thought I'd be higher, seeing as how almost everything I picked made the top 40.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Sterling Clover to thread

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG, I'm right next to Jim DeRogatis. Does that mean that when Ryan Adams firebombs his house, my shack is going to go up in flames as well? I'd better get to work with the asbestos.

As a side note, I feel so very... median.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

seeing as how almost everything I picked made the top 40.
woops, I was way off on that. While 4 of my picks made the top 10, only 4 more even made the 80 on.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm.

Michael Deeds (Mr Deeds), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I worked with L. Kent Wolgamott when I was an intern in college. He took me to see the Rolling Stones. That was nice.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Two Spin chiefs in the Top 20.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris O'Connor posts here, yeah? So he's the top ILMer.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i am sandwiched between a johnson and a wang on this list.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Here are another couple interesting details I noticed in the numbers:

- There were 312 voters who had at least one pick of ten that 60+ people agreed on and at least one pick of ten that nobody else voted for.

- Here's the complete breakdown of the number of voters by the number of other people who voted for their least-popular choice.

31: 1
23: 2
20: 1
15: 5
14: 5
13: 1
12: 1
11: 2
10: 3
9: 13
8: 14
7: 2
6: 5
5: 12
4: 23
3: 25
2: 53
1: 91
0: 467

That is, 467 of 762 voters picked at least one album that nobody else voted for.

If anybody thinks of another query that might be entertaining, let me know!

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

below average as always.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I rank below Chuck Eddy on Glenn's list, but way ahead of Pete Scholtes and Phil Freeman and some others.

Hey, Glenn, Harvard repreZENT!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Stuff like this is why I no longer remember Rickey Henderson's 1983 on-base percentage.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Rickey Henderson remembers Rickey Henderson's 1983 on-base percentage.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

are you sure about that?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

are you channeling him like how i channeled parrish that one time?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

haha no I'm semi-quoting ILM's favorite comedian

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

All I know is that Denny McLain went from 31-6 to 7-11

(ba dump bump)

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

One more. Here's the breakdown of how many voters had each possible number of unique picks:

0 unique picks: 285 voters
1: 176
2: 112
3: 60
4: 38
5: 36
6: 16
7: 14
8: 11
9: 3
10: 1

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Jaymc, apparently I'm the official ILM stiff. What the fuck? I am NOT Robert Hilburn (not that being the astute, gifted pop music writer for the LA Times is anything to truly scoff at). No. 6? Guess I gotta break out the Metal Blade and Rhymesayers records more often ... ;-)

Chris O., Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't despair, Chris! Your #1 finished #150 overall!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yaayyyyyy George!

I'm either working my way up in the world or an insidious mental deterioration has set in. I used to have a death grip on the ultimate and penultimate position.

Both tiers are easy to crash. I reckon anyone who has observed P&J for the last few years and who generally reads the music press can submit a ballot of artifice that will land in either, whichever desired.

George Smith, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i beat you out this year, george. my lowest showing ever i think. i usually vote for one token hip-hop album, but this year i didn't. that explains it, i think.(this is a joke. well, kinda. i think i voted for missy last year.)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks. Yeah, this year alone, I finished 47th. Lowest finish was 65th in 2001.

Chris O., Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

>>i beat you out this year, george. <<

That's mainly because George voted for the Darkness!!

chuck, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i won't comment, chuck. you know that i think very highly of george.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Rickey Henderson's 1983 OBP of .414 was very impressive, but perhaps more impressive was that after this season, at the age of 24, he had already posted 3 seasons of 100 steals and 100 BB in the same year! It was the last year he would steal 100, incidentally, swiping 108. His next highest total after that year? 93 steals with the New York Yankees in 1988.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess i gotta dig that damned album out again. i just didn't see whatg all the hubbub was about.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

or damn album out again. i have no problem digging or digging out Damned albums.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I knew I was kissing the ultra-bottom goodbye when I cast a vote for "Permission to Land" and, secondarily, "Mescalero." My hands trembled, I almost couldn't do it. It took five minutes and a bottle of cough-syrup to hit the [submit] button.

'Cough-syrup,' sagt der Rock Kritik!

George Smith, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

so was it Bill James of abstract fame who was responsible for schilling going to the Sox? he still works for the Sox, right?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that's probably what i need to enjoy the darkness. some 'tussin.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

diamond notes

It could be argued that not only was Bill James responsible for Schilling going to Boston, but also for the BoSox' impressive run last season, which ended ironically (some would suggest) because Grady Little felt he'd rather stick with Pedro than go to one of the members of James' suggested bullpen-by-committee. Not that any of this is true.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

it could be true. i'm a schilling fan. i was glad when he left philly (even though i ostensibly rooted for the fightin' phils in my decade+ of living in philly) cuz i knew it was his only chance to go all the way. i don't think i'll be rooting for the sox though (even though i now live kerry country. i didn't root for the Pats either.).

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the Red Sox hiring Bill James single-handedly revived my then-flagging interest in baseball.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

it was a cool development. i loved that new yorker story on the whole thing. and it is definitely the kind of thing that would inspire people who have long been tired of 'roids and long-balls.
