Great B-side collections that are yet to be released

We all know that a B-side collection may actually work as an excellent album in itself, with a lot of great material you may not have discovered before. I know Pet Shop Boys' "Alternative" is a fave of a lot of ILx'ers, and Suede and Oasis have also released excellent B-side collections. There are definitely lots of B-side collections that are not too though.

Anyway, which artists or bands should really hurry to release a B-sides compilation?

The first and most obvious one I can think of is Depeche Mode.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Siouxsie B-sides NOW PLZ.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The answer is Radiohead.

lee ward (lee ward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the answer is My Bloody Valentine.

Jedmond, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought radiohead have a disc in the works for a japan release..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah and all we have to do to get it is go to japan!!!!!!!!
HOW EASY IS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The Grifters, who could use an A-side collection as well.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It's only three or four tracks, but damnnit EMI should release the Pink Floyd early A and B sides disc that comes with the 'Shine On' box-set. My sole limited release copy was thrown out by someone and now i can't listen to 'Candy and a Current Bun' :-(

pete s, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Edelweiss

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Blur. for those of us that weren't able to get our hands on that mega-singles boxset a few years ago. that set would own.

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I would guess a Japan only Radiohead B-side collection will be exported to Europe and North America. Like most Japan-only-releases, it will cost about twice as much as in Europe and four times as much as in North America though...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

They have Pete, it came out as a glossy paper sleevemaxi-single release. It has the a and b-sides of the first three singles. Probably my favorite pink floyd by far.

That's what i had Counseler! I think i got it free when i bought 'Saucerful of Secrets'. But it's not available any more.

pete s, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

pavement dont have one do they? or are they gonna cover their bases by putting out deluxe albums ala slanted?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunno, but as I've muttered before, the homemade B-side comp I made courtesy of DB's collection is the best Pavement album ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Polydor/Universal have finally consented to the long awaited release of the BANSHEES B side boxset "DOWNSIDE UP" set for release in June.
Over 50 tracks will be included 30+ that have NEVER been issued on CD before."

So says www.stevenseverin.com !

Yay :-)

Muppet Boy, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the beatles they might have made one though. (happy 40th)
the flaming lips.
nirvana.

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Weezer could put out a damn box set of peripheral goodies by now.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay :-)

Woo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

weezer's putting out an exoanded edition of the blue album with an extra cd of b-sides and what not.
this should be pretty bodacious.......are the kids still saying that?......bodacious?.....hmmmmm

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

that word is supposed to be Expanded not exoanded

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Bjork should release a complete/expanded/halfway decent b-sides/remixes collection except I'm sure it would be done in the most exploitive ridiculous fashion possible. Thank god for P2P.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

And Stereolab should/could release a new Switched On soon. Those are always nice, even if I don't like the recent albums all that much these days.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know that there's enough material out there for it - there's only been those two tour singles and most of the latterday EPs are still available..

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the new stereolab album.
it's not better than dots & loops but it's still good

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Sloan; there aren't many, but at 2-3 per album, they must have a dynamite 10-12 track set all ready.

Throwing Muses; one's been in the works for a couple years, along with a best of, I believe.

His Name Is Alive; their odds and ends must be glorious.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So much HNIA archival stuff has come out on Warren D.'s Time Stereo label that it's hard to count, really.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Swervedriver. I would pay top dollar for all the early b-sides. The later ones were good too.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh for goodness's sake.

The answer, as you all know really, is PULP.

PuuuuuuuuuuLP.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles may not have made a b-sides compilation, but other than their 1967 b-sides, all of them are present on the "Past Masters" CDs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fall!

oh hold on (starry), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine the Super Furries are close to be being able to do another one, which would be welcome because I stopped buying all their singles awhile back.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Pavement have a few dozen excellent b-sides and rarities that will one day make a really top-notch compilation.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I am pretty surprised that The Smiths haven't been collected in this way (considering how relentlessly the A-sides are milked).

None-album tracks alone include:

Jeane
Wonderful Woman
Money Changes Everything
The Draize Train
What's the World?
I keep mine hidden

et cetera! et cetera! et cetera!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead. Radiohead. Radiohead. Radiohead. Radiohead. Radiohead.

Also:

New Order (post-Substance)
Blur (I've got the box, thank god, but for the rest...)
Nirvana (Incesticide was way unsatisfactory)
Primal Scream (something for the Dixie-Narco material, anyway)
Pulp
The Breeders

and yeah, one for Björk would be nice too.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Word on the street is that the kids are snaping up al The Coral's singles cos their B-sides are the most consistent for a band of their ilk since Oasis.

laticsmon (laticsmon), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Catherine Wheel. Lush.

JC (JC A.), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, both bands have had b-side comps released but nothing really definitive.

JC (JC A.), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Word on the street is that the kids are snaping up al The Coral's singles cos their B-sides are the most consistent for a band of their ilk since Oasis."

Unless Oasis' 'B'-sides were substantially better than their 'A'-sides (or their album tracks for that matter) this must surely be damning The Coral with faint praise!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Prefab Sprout

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The street sounds like it should stop stumbling around and vomiting on itself at 3 am.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Come now I'm snaping up those singles! Anyway yeah ST ETIENNE could prob do about 3 of these and still not cover everything, and they've rarely put out a bad track.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i usually prefer comps to sort of cherry pick 7" sides, radio sessions, demos & live covers, taking a smaller chronological chunk of an artist's career at a time, to the straight b-side anthology of the whole output... like, say, the siouxsie stuff i could care less about anything after the mid 80s... but anyway...

prolapse = this would be so great
pj harvey
deerhoof
james [80s only]
unrest
st. etienne, for sure
jazz butcher
stereolab - better to have a cleanup of the early b sides and eps not already switched on, than post dots n loops stuff

mig, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

prolapse = this would be so great
pj harvey

Freely agree on both of these -- I have an mp3 comp of the latter and thanks to the good Donut B and his collection of singles I've burned a copy of the former.

unrest

They had RPM though -- admittedly it wasn't everything.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

**Jeane
Wonderful Woman
Money Changes Everything
The Draize Train
What's the World?
I keep mine hidden**

Also the different mixes of This Charming Man. Chuck in the Troy Tate sessions and it would be worth buying.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead. Radiohead. Radiohead. Radiohead. Radiohead. Radiohead.

Radiohead b-sides? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........................

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

bpm, ned, as in their initials

and yes it's a fine comp but there's tons of great stuff out there.

actually bowie needs one now for his 70s stuff, now that the reissues are debonused.

de la soul had some great cd5s bitd [backintheday], would love to buy that.
prince 12"s, of course, need a proper anthology.

i agree the radiohead would be boring as hell, but you wonder why they haven't done it, when it would sell so well now as opposed to 10 years from now. imagine the derision that woulda greeted dead letter office if it had come out in the late 90s.

mig, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like Bjork'll be handled come April:

Funny enough, a good deal of them are!

Dunno, but as I've muttered before, the homemade B-side comp I made courtesy of DB's collection is the best Pavement album ever.
Yes, I made one the other day out of random bits and bobs and it works exceedingly well!

No call for a Boo Radleys b-sides collection? It would be better than any of their studio albums hands down!

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

How about The Divine Comedy?

Shooz (shooz), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I made my own. Four discs' worth!

Bob Dylan

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the early Laughing Clowns EPs are out of print, I'd like to get my hands on those. There was a rumour they were going to be compiled with the later albums in a three-CD box a while back, but nothing's happened AFAIK.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Thursday, 12 February 2004 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There's an unofficial Boo Radleys set floating around called Boo Sides. I can't remember where I found it, but someone was selling it on the internet. CDRs, but it's really nice. Not better than Wake Up, though.

dlp9001, Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

SELLING it? I've been offering to make copies of mine for years, none of this selling BS. If that bastard's been doing that to my set, then I'm pisssed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Blur. for those of us that weren't able to get our hands on that mega-singles boxset a few years ago. that set would own.

There is a b-sides collection called, um, Blur Present: The Special Collector's Edition that spans 91-94 or so, and has some great songs. Was it worth the $50 Japanese import price? To a 14 year old Canadian, it was!

Alexis (Alexis), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I got that one on a sale market for 5 euros... ;)

Ned, who do I have to kill for you to make me one of those "Boo Sides" set?

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I know they're pretty much all on the reissued albums but an ABBA B-Sides and rarities collection would be pretty grand.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, who do I have to kill for you to make me one of those "Boo Sides" set?

Pretty long list, that. (Alternately, drop me an e-mail and get ready to send me four blank 80-min CDRs.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Radiohead b-sides off the last 2 albums, put together, are actually better than either of the proper full-lengths. Prettier odd-ball melodies and more successful experimentation with the electronic sounds. "Fog" is excellent, as is "Cuttooth," and "I Am a Wicked Child." Plus the Four Tet remix of Scatterbrain...
yeah, if you're even a slight fan, the Radiohead b-sides aren't boring!

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Garbage

It's 1998 again!

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And they don't precisely have b-sides, but Bardo Pond's non-studio album catalogue is killer.

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the platters

kephm, Thursday, 12 February 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Siouxsie B-sides NOW PLZ.

Hey, this came true! I think I might just listen to my copy now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

* Pinback
* The Art Of Noise
* almost every early 90s hip hop group ever (except De La Soul who already did release something and did expanded 3 Feet High And Rising)

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny, there was an album called "De La Remix", which was available briefly as far as I can tell about ten years ago. I got it on tape and it turned into one of my favourite ever albums, so it got a bit annoying when I just couldn't get a hold of it. Eventually, I got almost all of it on the confusingly, but perhaps appropriately titled "Best of De La Soul" on import from Germany. The 3 Feet High.. expanded version covers a number of these tracks but not all of them. Well worth picking up if you bump into it.

Additionally, a Verve b-sides collection would suit nicely; I liked a lot of these tracks... Feel, A Man Called Sun, The Longest Day, Dance on Your Bones, I See The Door, Little Gem etc.

KeithW (kmw), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I've made such a comp, 2 CDRs worth of most of them. A good listen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too :)

gorky's

the super furries b-side nipple thing was as good as any of their albums. haven't heard one of their b-sides since though.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 17 January 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

mclusky? but i assume some sort of round up of the extant, but uncollected material may get put together in light of recent events.

pm, Monday, 17 January 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Definately Pulp! But seeing as I have all of their b-sides and they have a slew of unreleased tracks, I'd love to see it as a b-sides und rarities type thang. I mean the fact tha Pulp never released an official studio version of "Live On" is crying shame. They played it in every concert for about four years, planned on using it as their first Gift single, and then....nada. (If anyone wants an mp3 of fetching live version shoot me an email) Also there's an absolute ton of outtakes from "This is Hardcore" and "We Love Life" as well- did anyone catch "Grandfather's Nusery" on Amazon? Strange.
So, yeah, anyway...PULP!

David Bachyrycz, Monday, 17 January 2005 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be fine with this never happening, but if Ween ever decides to put together a 4-CD set of all their best non-album tracks, it would likely end up being my favorite album of alltime.

billstevejim, Monday, 17 January 2005 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't there a gorky's B-side/singles comp though?

donut christ (donut), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"mclusky? but i assume some sort of round up of the extant, but uncollected material may get put together in light of recent events.
-- pm (pemm300...), January 17th, 2005 6:20 PM."

Pitchfork reported a 2CD set of this coming in early summer I believe.
