JoB

JoB, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah yeah Daft Punk good Moldy Peaches good and all that jazz, but I'd just like to thank K-Reg for making sing "Austin Ambassador Y- Reg" by John Shuttleworth which was one of my singles of the year in 1996 and possibly still now, thank you very much. I second Melissas Low nomination. Damn, none of you will ever like me now, where are my glitch/prog/hop/ rootz now eh?

Sarah, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so far. (VERY roughly.):

daft punk - "discovery"

cannibal ox - "the cold vein"

spring heel jack and the blue series continuum - "masses"

avalanches - "since i left you"

beta band - "hot shots ii"

john cale - "sun blindness music"

missy eliot - "miss e..."

and then a bunch of albums i have to listen to more to decide on (matmos, techno animal, jaxx, etc.)

jess, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn it, I haven't even heard half those albums. but...heh, I don't need to. I'll second whoever said to wait until the next 3 months have passed!

Bill, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's this john cale - "sun blindness music" ?

Never heard of it... pop album, piano solos, symphony,. ....?

Dave225, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"What's this john cale - "sun blindness music" ?"

released a few months back on table of the elements. part one of a projected three part "nyc in the 1960s" series. his earliest pre- velvets home recordings, apart from the toem. solo verks for vox continental organ and guitar, uh, duet, with sterling morrison. hope to be pitching a review to ned soon for ft, so hopefully you'll get to read about it more in depth soon...

jess, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is very rough, as I'm far away from my records. Also, I'm adhering to Pitchfork's "No comps" rule:

Mouse on Mars - Idiology (nobody has listed this yet?! WTF?! Melissa?!) Nobukazu Takemura - Hoshi No Koe Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies & Uprock Narratives Fennesz - Endless Summer Jan Jelinek - Loop-finding Jazz Records Daft Punk - Discovery Avalanches - Since I Left You (this one is on the bubble) Labradford: fixed:content Mum: Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today is OK Matmos: A Chance To Cut

Mark, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Easier to read: This is very rough, as I'm far away from my records. Also, I'm adhering to Pitchfork's "No comps" rule: Mouse on Mars - Idiology (nobody has listed this yet?! WTF?! Melissa?!)
Nobukazu Takemura - Hoshi No Koe

Jan Jelinek - Loop-finding Jazz Records
Daft Punk - Discovery
Avalanches - Since I Left You (this one is on the bubble)
Labradford: fixed:content
Mum: Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today is OK
Matmos: A Chance To Cut

Mark, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ah, damn. knew it. please add "endless summer" to my list as well.

jess, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bows 'cassidy' is my fave but there are loads more i love figurine 'the heartfelt', of montreal 'coquelicot...', la buena vida 'hallelujah', modesty blaise'melancholia', gorky's 'how i long...' , pram 'somnilquoy', roy montgomery 'siver wheel of prayer', ladytron '604', marine time keepers 'perfect knowledge of dreams', crooner'soft escape'/happy balloon'fine art of ballooning'(since they are the same person), the shermans 'happiness is toy shaped', screen prints comp, cloudboy 'down at the end of the garden', harper lee 'go back to bed', desert wolves reissue.

i suppose i am not very hip. waiting to hear new trembling blue stars and bark psychosis and ant though i think that is out next year.

keith, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck hip; DMFP is squizaire.

Low - Things We Lost in the Fire Fridge - Happiness Pernice Brothers - The World Won't End Jay-Z - The Blueprint Graeme Downes - Hammers & Anvils Ted Leo - The Tyranny of Distance Spoon - Girls Can Tell Lightning Bolt - Ride the Skies Hawd Gankstuh Rapphus MC's (Wit Gatz) - Wake Up & Smell the Piss Mia Doi Todd - Zeroone Destroyer - Streethawk: A Seduction Aaliyah - Aaliyah Jim Yoshii Pile-Up - "It's Winter Here" Azure Ray - Azure Ray Ida - The Braille Night Radiohead - Amnesiac The Ex - Dizzy Spells The Lucksmiths - Why That Doesn't Surprise Me

    Out of order, of course.

David Raposa, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Trembling Blue Stars is excellent, and I wish I'd have listed it, too. Ditto the Pernice Brothers.

scott p., Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. The Strokes "Is This It?" 2. Joel Plaskett Emergency "Down at the Khyber" 3. Tyde "Once" 4. Life Without Buildings "Any Other City" 5. Ken Stringfellow "Touched" 6. Divine Comedy "Regeneration" 7. Great Lakes "Great Lakes" 8. Gorkys "How I Long to Feel..." 9. Zephyrs "When the Sky Comes Down..." 10. Black Crowes "Lions"

But it ain't over til it's over as they say... David R, any news on a release date for that Graeme Downes record? Sounds good.

Andrew Williams, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Graeme Downes record is OUT! At least, in the US. (And, yes, it's damn good.)

Fuck HTML; Greenspun pisses me off.

David Raposa, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's try again, because I like posting:

David Raposa, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGH.

David Raposa, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But the year isn't over. I can't think of ten albums I even liked anyhow. Jay-Z is all I listen to from this year, and sometimes Aaliyah. What else even came out this year? Oh, yeah, Daft Punk, I liked that.

Ally, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But the year isn't over.

Quite. 25% left to go, so I will reserve judgment.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i can only think of 3 offhand that i've really really enjoyed (they're quite guessable really), so i may as well wait too.

i knew Ethans list was going to be Ethan, but i thought Melissa W's list was going to be Andrew L

gareth, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth - yes, there's probably quite a lot of crossover w/Melissa's picks - except I wouldn't have Radiohead on my list for all the tea in china! I'm sorta still waiting to hear a few more things - Aphex Twin, new Jim O'Rourke ('Insignificance')- before I decide what my faves are. But the best new alb I've heard so far this year is prob. 'Auspicious Healing' by Tsiji Munzoz/Henry Kaiser/Marilyn Crispell/Thomas Ligetti/Marc Dresser - a freak flag flying free jazz guitarathon.

Trying to work out what Gareth's three are - is the Matthew Herbert one of 'em?

Andrew L, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1.Mouse On Mars- Idiology

Other highlights:

Tipsy- Uh-Oh, The Pattern- Immediately, Pan Sonic- Aaltopiiri, Unisex- Stratosfear, cLOUDDEAD- cLOUDDEAD, The Chemistry Experiment- The Giraffe Album (hee hee), Fischerspooner- #1, ISAN- Lucky Cat, Electrelane- Rock It To The Moon...

There are a couple of others I'm sure would make it if I'd got around to hearing, and I'm sure a few that just haven't surfaced to my brain...

emil.y, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone i've shown my list to has said it's very 'me', what's up with that?

ethan, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ethan, you've become a parody of yourself.

fred solinger, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan -- I was actually surprised at the dearth of hip-hop on your list. Was this not a good year in that regard?

Mark, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So far, very roughly, off top of head:

1. Basement Jaxx, Rooty
2. Daft Punk, Discovery
3. Bob Dylan, "Love and Theft"
4. The Coup, Party Music
5. Atmosphere, Lucy Ford
6. The Moldy Peaches
7. Avalanches, Since I Met You
8. Old 97's, Satellite Rides
9. Superlongevity
10. Michael Franti & Spearhead, Stay Human

M. Matos, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seeing as we're only 75% of the way through the year, as quite rightly pointed out up thread, here is my top 7.5 albums of the year (in no particular order): 1) 604 - Ladytron
2) The Oliver Twist Manifesto - Luke Haines
3) Any Other City - Life Without Buildings
4) Secrets - The Human League
5) Rock It To The Moon - Electrelane
6) Kittenz And Thee Glitz - Felix Da Housecat
7) Look Into The Eyeball - David Byrne
7.5) Christie Malry's Own Double Entry OST - Luke Haines

jamesmichaelward, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark, there have actually been a few more rap albums from this year that i'd enjoyed, but i was trying to be as honest with my list as possible and i just don't listen to that many entire new hiphop albums anymore. it's sad, my 2000 list was practically all rap.

oh and why haven't you responded to my last email yet, you bastard?

ethan, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was The Moldy Peaches this year? Then definitely add it to my list...

emil.y, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1) Mercury Rev, "All is dream" [by far...]

2) The New Year, "Newness Ends"

3) Low, "Things we lost in the fire"

4) Old Time Relijun, "Witchcraft Rebellion"

5) The New Pornographers, "Mass Romantic"

6) Kings of Convenience, "Quiet is the new loud"

7) Radiohead, "Amnesiac"

8) Nick Cave, "no more shall we part"

9) The Strokes, "is this it" [the record itself isn't very strong but I love the guys' attitude. Plus, as you might have noticed I picked mostly sad and slow-paced stuff, I need some energy!!)

I'll get in a couple of days Ted Leo, John Zorn, Graeme Downes and American Analog Set, all of which I expect to be pretty good... Did Anyone listen to Circulatory system? Pitchfork was raving about it not a long ago...

Simone, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

#1, having had it for just a week, I'll say, Change, by the D-Plan. Idiology and Hot Shots II are tied in there somewhere, and then we have Moreno Veloso, Matmos, and Discovery.

I don't think there's much more I'm anticipating this year, but I'd love to be surprised.

Keiko, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mouse on Mars - Idiology (nobody has listed this yet?! WTF?! Melissa?!)

Somewhere along the line it began to REALLY annoy me. I still like some moments of it...great swells of sound here and there. But ultimately a very unsatisfying listen.

Melissa W, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also forgot to list Matmos and cLOUDDEAD. Other contenders: Wechsel Garland, Triangles, E*Vax, Broadway Project, Shannon Wright, Roots Manuva, Cannibal Ox, Mira Calix, Andrea Parker, Stars as Eyes, Mia Doi Todd... Others I've missed as well, I'm sure.

Melissa W, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure how I managed to forget the Kylie album seeing as I've been listening to it all day but I did manage to forget it.

I've remembered it now though!

jamesmichaelward, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damnit, Phonem, Styrofoam, and Wechsel Garland were all 2000. Hmmm...must keep up better.

Melissa W, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Melissa -- Do you like Mouse on Mars at all? Which album is your favorite? Just asking because I'm surprised you didn't dig Idiology.

Mark, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the only two 2001 albums I've heard all the way through are the new Jay Z and Slipknot - Iowa. Oh yeah, and High Visibility by the Hellacopters. And Amnesiac. And The Donnas Turn 21. They're all good except the Donnas.

Kris, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I really loved Idiology at first, then suddenly just couldn't listen to it anymore without skipping through the whole CD. I think my favorite MoM is Iaora Tahiti. And I really like Instrumentals.

Melissa W, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I should add that even on those 2 I can find them annoying, but on Idiology especially so.

Melissa W, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We agree on Broadway Project then......

Ronan, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh i need to get digital bullet too.

ethan, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fennesz - Endless Summer

Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun

Jake Mandell - Love Songs for Machines

Boards of Canada - "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country" EP

Richie Hawtin - DE9: Closer to the Edit (I've only heard it once, but it sounded incredible... have you all heard this? What do you think?)

Roy Montgomery - Silver Wheel of Prayer

Other stuff I've liked: Mogwai, D-Plan, Aphex (from what little I've heard so far), Prefuse, etc... so much music this year so far!

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun

Boards of Canada - "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country" EP

1999, 2000

Melissa W, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

trembling blue stars as a band sounded great on the ep. i am anxious for the albu. also forgot to wish for the neil halstead record. not much comes out in december so really only 2 months left of anything interesting. i am definitely king of the wuss-pop it seems, forgot to add the odd new girlfrendo record 'so you are here again shadow?' which makes me forgive them for their first record.

keith, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

02. Noriko Tujiko - Shojo Toshi
05. Lali Puna - Scary World Theory
07. Isan - Lucky Cat
08. Styrofoam - The Point Misser
10. Kammerflimmer Kollektief - Maander
11. Jan Jelinek - loop-finding-jazz-records
13. Vert - Nine Types of Ambiguity
14. Bogdan Raczynski - My Love I Love
15. Phonem - Hydro Electric
16. Ilpo Väisänen - Asuma
17. Neotropic - La Prochaine Fois

I've never heard of these artists. Who are they? I think there's a chance some of them might interest me judging from some of the other items on your list. How's the new Pan Sonic? I've heard it's more "organic," which does not entice me. I think I buy less new music than everyone else. Ryoji Ikeda's Matrix is topping my list so far but it also might be the only 2001 album I own. (I've heard a few others but I don't think they made much of an impression.) I'm planning to pick up the new Alvo Noto when it shows up here though.

sundar subramanian, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Scratch Pet Land: Solo Soli iiii
2. Dymaxion: Dymaxionx4+3=39.21

8. Stereolab: Sound Dust
9. Daft Punk: Discovery

Momus, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

andrew l: i have never actually heard Matthew Herbert.

my three were:

Jay-Z - The Blueprint
Autechre - Confield
Daft Punk - Discovery

i think my 10 will wait to the year, but it will be a shock if this triumvirate don't hold on til then

gareth, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sundar:

11. Jan Jelinek - loop-finding-jazz-records 16. Ilpo Väisänen - Asuma

11. = ~scape artist, probably the best artist on the label outside of pole himself. takes teensy weensy fragments of jazz records via the loop finding wheel on his sampler and creates ver' beautiful ambi- scapes. might end up in my top 10 if i give it a few more listens.

16. one half of pan(a)sonic. you do the math.

as for ryoji ikeda, i dig matrix, but not as much as the godhead which was +/-...

jess, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Beulah - The Coast is Never Clear
2. Belle & Sebastian - Jonathan David EP
3. Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies...
4. Four Corners - Say You're a Scream
5. Call and Response - S/T
6. Ladytron - 604
7. Alsace Lorraine - Through Small Windows
8. Apples in Stereo - Let's Go EP
9. Slumber Party - Psychedelicate
10. Plaid - Double Figure
yay!

phil, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Melissa, you're probably right... plus, I'm in the States, so maybe stuff got released here later? Anyway, I still love those records. ;- )

Clarke B., Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

VCN received a domestic releaes in 2001, so that'll be appearing on a few lists (not mine, though, I got it last year.) That's twice I've seen it called 1999, but only the $100 box set version w/ the t-shirt and the noisemakers was released that year. Does that really count?

Mark, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't put them in any order yet, but Off the top of my head:

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - 'Ease Down The Road' (still my favourite)
SquarePusher - 'Go Plastic'
Nick Cave - 'No More Shall We Part'
Air - '10,000HZ Legend'
Tindersticks - 'Can Our Love... '
The White Stripes - 'White Blood Cells'
Susumu Yokota - 'Grinning Cat'
The Avalanches - 'Since I left You'
Bjork - 'Vespertine'
Daft Punk - 'Discovery'

DavidM, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"That's twice I've seen it called 1999, but only the $100 box set version w/ the t-shirt and the noisemakers was released that year. Does that really count?"

i guess it depends on how much of a fan you are. ;) (speaking as someone who can accurately list vcn as his third favorite album of the 90s.) :)

jess, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I forgot the White Stripes! Another really good one.

Kris, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Bonnie Prince Billy-Ease Down the Road. 2. Stanton Warriors-The Stanton Sessions 3. Ryan Adams-Gold 4. Jim White-No Such Place 5. Spiritualized-Let it Come Down 6. SFA-Rings Around the World. 7. Fourtet-Pause 8. Mogwai-Rock Action 9. Whiskeytown-Pneumonia 10. Broadway Project-Compassion.

Loads more which I can't remember. Bonny Billy-More Revery, cos I lurve Will Oldham, the man who seems to fuck up singing his own songs. I also forgot Lift to Experience. I could rearrange this if I had a list of all the new albums I got this year I guess.

Ronan, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Daft Punk - Discovery
Jay-Z - The Blueprint
Bjork - Vespertine
V/A: Andrew Weatherall - Hypercity

Tim, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>>> Overall an amazing year for music, really.

I agree. Only one decent LP of new material all year.

the pinefox, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't read this thread yet, but I guess I'm pretty out of it if I haven't heard a single one of Ethan's nominees.

Sean, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Melissa on Idiology: Somewhere along the line it began to REALLY annoy me.

That's funny, it really annoyed me on the first listen, but I love it to bits now. In fact it's the only new album that's sprung to mind as completely rocking my world (I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff; I'm also sure that most of the 2001 albums I grow to love I won't even buy until I see them second-hand next year). Now, Niun Niggung, that STILL annoys me, but I do love Mouse on Mars.

ethan writes: 10) kid 606 - gq on the eq

What're the extra tracks on the full-length rerelease like? I already have the 10" version and it didn't grab me that much, I don't think I feel rich enough to buy it again, but on the other hand everyone seems to rate the rerelease.

, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like your humor Pinefox. But wasn't Lloyd Cole's album released last year? Anyways the year is not yet over so and I hope there will be some more good music because 2001 was actually quite poor musically as the Pinefox already said. So it is only a top 5. In the order from last purchase to first purchase: - New Order: Get Ready
- Radiohead: Amnesiac
- Joy Division: Les Bains Douches (probably the best yet)
- REM: Reveal
- Howe: Confluence I have the impression that my taste becomes more and more mainstream and old-fashioned as well. But bloody hell I did not hear one new band/artist worth figuring here. What a shame.

the gq on the eq re-release is great because it has 'just another kool kat looking for a kitty' and 'staying home from school' and 'when i want a gun, yeah' in addition to all the great original tracks. everyone should get it.

seeing the 'being sexy in print' thread (on ILE prob.), was I the only one to read Melissa's list and fall in love?

m jemmeson, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's amazing to me is that I've listened to more albums this year than in any year in my life, and I probably haven't heard more than 10 or 15 of those listed above. Here's a list, no agonizing over it:

Montgomery Gentry Carrying On
DJ Xclusive Cornerstone Mixtape 26 March '01
Fabulous Disaster Put Out Or Get Out
Backbone Concrete Law
Manu Chao Proxima Estacion: Esperanza
Gore Gore Girls Strange Girls
Bob Dylan Love And Theft
Jay-Z The Blueprint
The White Stripes White Blood Cells
Slimm Cutta Calhoun The Skinny

Given that the focus seems to be on IDM... did anyone hear Tigerbeat6 ? It's said tp be the future of IDM and a brilliant compilation anyway

Simone, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Mainhattan: yes, Lloyd was 2000. The one I was on about was Dylan. But I forgot about the Blake Babies. Their new LP is at least half good (the first half).

the pinefox, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

for what it's worth (in no particular order and some of them are probably ages old): squarepusher go plastic; storm and stress - whatever the 2nd storm and stress album is called; the fucking champs "IV"; nobekazu takemura - hoshi no koe; bogdan raczynski - thinking of you; tom zé - jogos de armar; bjork - vespertine; hugo largo - mettle; faxed head - chiropractic; low - things we lost in the fire. ta da! (a warm palindrome would've made it but their last disc was split with 2 unremarkable acts).

bob snoom, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Adding three more albums to the five I already mentioned upthread:
- Calexico: Aerocalexico tour CD. Phantastic. Much less commercial than the official albums. Joey and John are absolutely brilliant instrumentalists.
- Fink: Fink. A German band from Hamburg singing in German. The style is a slightly folky Americana. Not too far from Calexico.
- Kings of Convenience: The Quiet Is the New Loud. For once an album which can stand up to the hype. These Norwegians sound like the brothers of Nick Drake. Great songwriting.

Fine, but lacking something:

Kristin Hersh: Sunny Border Blue (the last track and a half, specifically - a dodgy promo CD-R) Ilpo Vaisanen: Asuma MoM: Idiology

Still to explore properly:

Jim O'Rourke: Insignificance Bjork: Vespertine

Keen to hear based on recommendation/review:

Fennesz: Endless Summer

Fuck. What the hell? That message should be started with "Updated 2001 List"...and then, not No Maps, No Watches...it's the other way around. No Watches, No Maps. *sigh*
This is what I get for copying and pasting from various emails.

Melissa - is that live Radiohead worth it?

Ryan A White, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hah!

serious question: maura is the red monkey worth my 11 clams? (obv. the answer is yes, if in your favorite records, and since jess has travelled to see them live, scheduled at one point to put a m. wimpshake 7" out, etc, he should just go and buy it, but he's having reservations for reasons unknown.)

jess, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Melissa - is that live Radiohead worth it?

Yeah, the EP is pretty good.
Not completely excited about it...I was there for most of these performances and that beats them on a cd.
The version of Morning Bell on there (Oxford) is amazing. Jonny laces into the guitar with such vigor.
Like Spinning Plates live is a big fan favorite...it's stripped down and elegiacal. But the studio version is my favorite RH song of all time, and somehow live it's just too simplistic.
And The National Anthem is great live because that Ondes-Martenot is the loudest thing in the whole mix. Fantastic.

All the performances are pretty solid...definitely buying it. Worth the price just for the Oxford version of Morning Bell.

Wow, I remember their old tastes but it's still hard to recognise Ronan and Ethan (perhaps the two regular posters I most associate with a specific genre) from their lists here.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 21 April 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

woah ethan's list! crazy.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 21 April 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha...I found my 2001 list from Barbelith:

Bobby Conn-The Golden Age
Alpha-The Impossible Thrill
Retsin-Cabin In The Woods
Tortoise-Standards
Radiohead-Amnesiac
Guided By Voices-Isolation Drills
Oval-Ovalcommers
Strokes-Is This It
Edith Frost-Wonder Wonder
Bjork-Vespertine
Spiritualized-Let It Come Down
Arab On Radar-Yahweh or the Highway

Bobby Conn, Strokes, Alpha, and Radiohead I'll still stick with. I can only assume that I hadn't gotten around to listening to Girls Can Tell and Rooty yet at that point. Those two would be my top two with a bullet, in retrospect.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 21 April 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

Funny that Matos listed Avalanches as his #7 of 2001 but has more recently called it his favorite of the decade so far.

At the time, my top 5 was something like...

1. Mercury Rev - All is Dream
2. Dismemberment Plan - Change
3. Bjork - Vespertine
4. Strokes - Is This It
5. Radiohead - Amnesiac

And then probably, I dunno, Low and Tortoise?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 April 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Whereas now I'd unhesitatingly add Daft Punk, Avalanches, and Prefuse 73.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 April 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Roughly:

Bob Dylan, "Love & Theft"
Jay Z, The Blueprint
Lucinda Williams, Essence
New Order, Get Ready
Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, Missy...So Addictive

ummm...can't think of the rest right now

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 21 April 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

Just remembered a couple more from my original top 10:

Mogwai, Rock Action
American Analog Set, Know by Heart

And one I'd add today:

Life Without Buildings, Any Other City

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 April 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)
