why has there been no discussion of this? it's really good!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(mix cd, btw - mostly southern hip-hop/rnb/dancehall/electro. kind of obvious in places, and the electro opening feels like a cop to whitey and makes it take waaaaaay too long to feel like it's really gotten started. but the bonecrusher-"project chick"-"tainted love"-trick daddy progression just kills. as do several others.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

also, hometown pride.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised this hasn't come up before, too. Picked it up in NY in December, and it's fun, but I don't like it as much as I thought I would. Bonus points for including Kano and The Cars, though.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the mixing is for shit a lot of the time and it hardly "flows" but it'd be good at a party i think, and as a 2003 memento it really can't be beat.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i loved this when it came out but never really listen to it anymore. i do remember it being really good though, especially around track five.

jess otm about it being the ideal 2003 mixtape.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoyed it greatly.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

also it gets props for including that one wicked bjork remix of "it's in our hands".

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

also for mixing "mundian te bach ke" into "belly dancer", which is so obvious that apparently nobody else thought to do it.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the guys who made that CD has a blog that's often full of good links, even if he's a little too obnoxious with the belabored slang: www.catchdubs.com

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

HE'S in hollertronix?!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

nick barat, right?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds good, oh well.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think so, Mark... I may be wrong... maybe he's just affiliated with them. But that's what someone told me. I don't know... I think that he finds good links, but I cringe everytime he refers to something as a "jawn" or how much "skrilla" something costs. But the site is pretty good otherwise I think.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh. it's the notion of people who use those words that kept me from going to see hollertronix at nye here in toronto.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds great.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

no he just does the graphics
One of the guys Diplo just released a Ninja Tune 12"
it's a good mix
it's getting them a lot of press and gig

jj, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

well, that explains all the typography links.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone in NYC going to hollertronix party on Friday? I'm not sure I can make it, I went once before at some weird bar on John st. Great mix of dancehall, hiphop, mash ups, and a wonderfully placed New Order track.
Ladies get in free, for whatever that's worth

Mitchell (Mitchell), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

JESS where's the tracklist??

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I always love the first half and then get the inevitable casting-around feeling as things move on. Unfortunately I can't seem to remember what it is about the second half that gives me that impression. Nevertheless: good stuff. Where's the NYC party?

nabiscothingy, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

some place called 9 1/2, 21st between park and bway
http://www.hollertronix.com/v2/

Mitchell (Mitchell), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

God bless soulseek. Apologies to Hollertronix for stealing their mix CD, I'm not sure you can get it in Britain.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hey!! in the "gujrati soundclash" section at the end what's the track that uses the beat from "hypnotise"??

vahid (vahid), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
i'm listening to that now!

holy shit this is good! jess so otm in regards to the 2003 souvenir thing and the fact that this will be a wonderful wonderful party album

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening now, thanks to s1ocki - it's fucking unbelievable.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

who did the 'meeting the ladies room' track?

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew--->s1ocki--->Me--->Mark P---> (?)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the circle of life!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

or the sequence of arrests

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, yeah this is Diplo, right? He's on Big Dada, album out later this year. No idea what it will sound like, though.

Thanks to all the Ukrainians.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of the songs included are very obvious, but I don't mind. I like that they are bold enough to go for big classics - it doesn't strike me as laziness so much as wanting to ruthlessly rule whatever dance floor they are playing to.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, it's the bigness and the obviousness that makes this such a crucial mix, IMO.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

and nicely, "big and obvious" was the phrase I used to describe it to s1ocki.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew--->s1ocki--->Me--->Mark P---> (?)

i'm the source! i got it from the cd.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 March 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet that makes you feel like the big man around here, doesn't it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 8 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

well ooh la de da

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not as crazy about it on second listen. for some reason when i was listening to it for the first time it seemed a lot more dense, like there was more of a barrage of hooks, but who knows, maybe i'll go back to loving it on my third.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Geoff the answer to your question is Klymaxx.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel somewhat the same way as s1ocki - when I first heard it, it was extremely exciting and fun, and I didn't know where it was going - every new song in the mix was a surprise. I still think it's good, but knowing how it all goes removes part of my enjoyment, and I start thinking about how the mixing is kinda shoddy at a lot of points throughout the cd. Still, if it's meant to be like a live DJ mix, then getting lost in an ephemeral moment is half the point, right?

Erlend Oye's DJ Kicks mix has held up much better on repeat listens.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
so does anyone know if track three, "Thick Jawns" (starts off with some Watch out for the Big Girl and some DMX track) are Baltimore Breakbeat? i know these guys have played with DJ Technics, but i've never actually heard the b.more stuff. this is just what i assumed it would sound like

JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 2 May 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yes.

Nellie (nellskies), Sunday, 2 May 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that song sucks donkey balls.

uh, Sunday, 2 May 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't trust anything you say

JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 2 May 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

??? that's one of the best ones on there!

i tried slsking for baltimore stuff and that song was one of the first to pop up.

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 2 May 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I love this mix. Yeah it is like 2manydjs in that it gets old quickly but when the sun comes out and you're going somewhere in the car, just TRY not to put it on.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 2 May 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Perpetua:

Some of the songs included are very obvious, but I don't mind. I like that they are bold enough to go for big classics - it doesn't strike me as laziness so much as wanting to ruthlessly rule whatever dance floor they are playing to.

i think one of the reasons they're so prone to obvious material is largely due to the fact that philly kids only like the obvious stuff.

ive been to a few hollertronix events and watched the floor clear when they start playing a lot of dirty south stuff, which is ironic since that was how they made their name in the scene. the second they start playnig the hits, however, the place is insanely packed. i just feel it makes them indistinguishable from any of the other djs in town...

also: nick braat is not involved in hollertronix. its just two guys: low budget & diplo [aka, wes gully].

lastly: the hollertronix guys did an opening slot when 2manydjs came to town...

maria tessa sciarrino, Sunday, 2 May 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
is this just a mix like 2 many Djs then?
do they add anything to it?

all this mixtape shit is bullshit. - the thought that they are making money form those cds makes me sick/.

fucking djs / how about paying the artists some licensing fees.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 6 September 2004 00:49 (twenty years ago)

*slow clap*

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 September 2004 01:44 (twenty years ago)

Are you taking penicillin for that?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 6 September 2004 01:47 (twenty years ago)

i think hollertronix is the ultimate example for me of hating everything an artist is about and still being down with the finished product

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 September 2004 01:53 (twenty years ago)

What exactly is it you hate out of curiosity?

djdee2005, Monday, 6 September 2004 01:58 (twenty years ago)

also: nick braat is not involved in hollertronix. its just two guys: low budget & diplo [aka, wes gully].

fer instance.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:00 (twenty years ago)

The hipster pandering?

djdee2005, Monday, 6 September 2004 02:00 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what they are "about" so this is just a nice mix to me, but I do find most Ninja Tune people annoying so I wouldn't be shocked if I detested Hollertronix if I did any investigation.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Presumably hipsters enjoying deep south and jamaican music on a novelty level, dilettantism and lack of engagement with the musical culture, preponderance of trucker hats, and FUN.

xpost to "what is it that you hate"

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't say its fair to accuse them of dilettantism as much as their fans...Diplo did actually fly down to the favelas namean?

djdee2005, Monday, 6 September 2004 02:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't hate 'em for that I'm just projecting onto the screen of Jess' persona.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:03 (twenty years ago)

i wrote this elsewhere, but it bears repeating:

oh i loved the hollertronix mix! i just hate all the accumulated baggage, especially living around philly, where they are the great white hopes. plus the whole checkout my stupid fresh stereolab-cam'ron blend its the jawnizzle muhnizzle bullshit. SHUT UP YOU HONKY.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:04 (twenty years ago)

whether or not they mean it or are "for real" their public persona comes off a little shuck and jive for my liking

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:05 (twenty years ago)

fair enough.

djdee2005, Monday, 6 September 2004 02:08 (twenty years ago)

not that anyone should have a lock on slang or language should be determined by skin color, but c'mon, don't be a menace to south central while drinking your juice in the hood.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:10 (twenty years ago)

reminds me of that z-trip and radar (?) mix thing years ago. ever hear the beginning of that? the intro announcement? yikes

duke yikes, Monday, 6 September 2004 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Although the Iron Butterfly bit on that z-trip and radar mix was classic...

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago)

I figure Diplo and low budget deserve cool pts. just for helping DJ Technics break baltimore club in nyc.

djdee2005, Monday, 6 September 2004 03:47 (twenty years ago)

how is the other newer stuff? any good?

am i alone here in finding the second graf kinda classist and racist (or at least chauvinistic) (and at the very least just clumsy and dumb.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:59 (twenty years ago)

i suppose that "seemingly" in there skirts the edge just enough to save him. invoking the underground railroad is pretty dodgy no matter what.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:01 (twenty years ago)

well the analogy only works if you ignore the "overground railroad;" i mean shit, not even pforkers need diplo to tell them who lil jon is! (chapelle clued them in months ago dude)

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:21 (twenty years ago)

chiarascuro isn't an adjective

movie loser (slutsky), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago)

"vibez cartel"!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

"jawns"

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago)

i like how half the tracks on Florida strike a mood similar to idyllic electronica, except the melodies are crate-dug and the rhythms are crunk.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago)

what is a jawn? is it like a joint?

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:50 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
this was a fun thread.
