like the brit equivalents of the yeh yeh girls in france or the brill building ladies of the USA. I listen to a lot of American girl group stuff, but I don't know much about the emerald isle equivalents... i'm thinking sandie shaw, lulu, p.p. arnold, etc.

...maybe even marianne faithfull? millie?

what else? any good comps of this stuff? can someone do a rough guide?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Here Come the Girls, vols.1-zillion.

These are excellent.

"The Emerald Isle"?? Not unless you're thinking of the artist formerly known as Mary O'Brien.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, i knew that sounded stupid as I wrote it... sorry.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget Pet Clark! Not crazy about Marianne Faithfull or Lulu.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Twinkle! Get the Golden Lights comp if you don't have it yet. There isn't anything as good as Terry on it but it's still a fun listen.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Fritz - if you check out the Here Come the Girls series on Amazon, you can get sound samples!

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

RPM's Dreambabes vol 1-5
Decca's The Girls' Scene
seconding Here Come the Girls

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

and RPM's fabulous Dream Babes series. start with vol. 1 because it has jackie lee's "the town i live in," pretty much the greatest song ever.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post, obviously!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of Twiggy's stuff is worth checking out too.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, nice suggestions

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That volume 8 on Amazon is one of the best, BTW. {/shill}

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that one!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Sandie Shaw!

LondonLee (LondonLee), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

some classics, obvious but good:
dreary days & nights - lulu
the boat that i row - lulu
girl don't come - sandy shaw
pay you back with interest - marianne faithfull
i want you to be my baby - billie davis
i'm not sayin' - nico (i know she's german, but it was an immediate single)
if you think you're groovy - p.p. arnold
always something there to remind me - sandie shaw
you're my world - cilla black

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

P.P. Arnold cut a single with the Small Faces called "If You're Feeling Groovy" that's just as fantastic and you'd think from the title.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, jut saw that Lauren mentioned it on her list.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

And she had the title right too.

I'm going outside for a smoke.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sandie Shaw!

Let me second this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Helen Shapiro - Tell Me What He Said / Walk on by / Fever
Cilla Black - Love Of The Loved
Cryin' Shames - Please Stay
The Three Bells - Softly In The Night
Samantha Jones - Don't Come Any Closer
Beryl Marsden - Breakaway (...not if Tracy Ullman is british)

eleki-san (eleki-san), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Let's Go! Joe Meek's Girls. Fritz, I have most of these records. Send me your address again, I'd be happy to make you a CD or two.

Some more individual songs--

The Sharades-Dumb Head
Janie Jones-Witch's Brew
Linda Laine & the Sinners-Low Grades and High Fever
Linda Flavell-The Trouble with Me Is You
Lulu-Choc Ice
Gunilla Thorn-Go On Then (not British, but a Meek production)
The Breakaways-He Doesn't Love Me

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 12 February 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Linda Flavell-The Trouble with Me Is You

oh my god, that's like one of the best songs EVER.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 12 February 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the Girls' Scene comp is so fucking great!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 12 February 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(does anyone have the Bernadette Peters' version of "The Trouble with Me is You"?)

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! you are all the toppermost of the poppermost.

arthur expect an email but i already owe you one!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 12 February 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Rosemary--I love Linda Flavell's voice SO much! Its tunelessness is so appealing. Kinda reminds me of the Patty Duke record I have, but much cuter. You should bring it along if you visit Ally at her radio show.

Fritz, don't worry about it. Someday you'll school me in all things Canadian/US garage.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 12 February 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Rosemary-Also the fuzz guitar and harpsichord and french horn (I think) arrangement is so great!

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 12 February 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Got no one to comb my hair for" has got to be one of the greatest lines ever.

Arthur, totally, I should just force Ally to play the whole CD. And then you could listen on the interweb, Fritz!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 12 February 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Jens (brighter), Thursday, 12 February 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It is. Song was written by David Hess and Camille Monte - Ginny's version came out late '63, and The Sharades in '64. The Sharades were Maggie Stredder and Gloria George, two of The Ladybirds - Benny Hill's backing singers.
