Having one's musical taste be influenced by exposure to artists you've seen in department/outlet store TV monitors via promo tapes and satellite promo TV stations : C/D?

I blame Montgomery Ward or whatever place it was that always played the cool more "edgy" synth pop stuff on the TV in the women's sportswear section when I was 14 years old circa 1986 (example: Depeche Mode, Belouis Some, Vitamin Z, Ministry(!), Killing Joke(!), Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder, etc.)
